Jordynn Dudley Bookends Gotham FC's 2-1 Win at North Carolina Courage With Stoppage-Time Winner
Rookie Jordynn Dudley scored in the eighth minute and again in stoppage time as Gotham FC beat the North Carolina Courage 2-1 in front of a sold-out crowd in Cary.

Jordynn Dudley opened the scoring before most of the sold-out crowd in Cary had settled into their seats, and she closed it in stoppage time after most of them had decided they were watching a draw. In between, the North Carolina Courage threw just about everything at Gotham FC, including a would-be equalizer that VAR wiped off the board.
None of it was enough. Dudley scored in the eighth minute and again in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, and Gotham beat the Courage 2-1 on Saturday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park. The league leaders made it two wins in a row, and the rookie forward made it look like she has been doing this for a decade.
Eight Minutes, One Rookie
Gotham did not waste time. In the eighth minute, Sam Kerr found Dudley breaking into the box, and Dudley finished with her right foot into the bottom left corner, past Kailen Sheridan at the far post. It was the kind of goal that makes a home crowd go quiet in a hurry.
From there, the Courage did most of the shooting, if not the scoring. Ashley Sanchez set up Gianna Paul for a header that slid just wide in the 30th minute, then fed her again for a shot that was blocked in the 33rd. Gotham had its moments, with Tierna Davidson heading a Rose Lavelle corner just wide in the 24th and Kerr forcing Sheridan into a save with a header off a Guro Reiten cross in the 40th. But the closing stretch of the half belonged to North Carolina. Sanchez forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save in the 42nd minute, missed narrowly from the left side of the box a minute later, and Paul dragged another shot wide in stoppage time.
Two Goals That Weren't, One That Was
The Courage thought they had their equalizer two minutes into the second half, when Sanchez put the ball in the net. VAR ruled it out, and the decision was confirmed in the 49th minute. North Carolina said it was the second potential equalizer of the night chalked off for offside after a review.
The hosts kept coming. Sanchez headed a Ryan Williams cross just wide in the 59th minute and had another shot blocked in the 60th. Then, in the 69th minute, the dam finally broke in the most chaotic way possible. Off a corner, Evelyn Ijeh headed a Vilde Bøe Risa cross off the right post, Berger saved Feli Rauch's follow-up, and Natalia Staude hammered the rebound into the bottom right corner from the middle of the box. The Courage said it was Staude's first goal in a North Carolina jersey.
Both benches moved immediately. The Courage sent on Carly Wickenheiser and Dani Weatherholt, and Gotham brought on Taryn Torres for Reiten, then Bruninha and Savannah McCaskill in the 81st minute. Ijeh headed another chance wide in the 77th and Sanchez fired just wide from distance in the 81st. North Carolina had the momentum. It did not have a second goal.
The Turning Point
The first minute of stoppage time. Gotham had pushed numbers forward after an 89th-minute corner, and Bruninha missed from the middle of the box off a Kerr flick. Moments later, Kerr headed the ball to Lavelle, Lavelle headed it on from the right side of the six-yard box, and Dudley poked it into the bottom right corner from very close range. There were seven minutes of stoppage time in all, and Sanchez had one last look from the left side of the six-yard box in the 93rd minute that slid wide. That was the night in miniature for North Carolina: close, then not.
Dudley Steals the Show
Dudley's line is efficient to the point of rude: three shots, two on target, two goals. She also drew six fouls, which tells you how much the Courage struggled to deal with her. Gotham's own postgame coverage noted that her two goals pushed the league leaders to a second straight win, which undersells it a bit. Without her, this is a 1-1 draw and a very different bus ride home.
Kerr was the connective tissue, assisting the opener, setting up Bruninha's chance and starting the move for the winner. Lavelle picked up the assist on the decider, and Berger made two saves, including the one on Rauch that only delayed the equalizer.
For North Carolina, Sanchez was relentless with six shots and a goal taken away by VAR, but only one of her attempts hit the target. Paul had four shots, Staude scored on her only one, and Sheridan was left with a single save on a night when Gotham simply did not need many looks.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: North Carolina 14, Gotham 11. On target: 3 apiece.
- Possession: Gotham 55.4 percent, North Carolina 44.6 percent.
- Fouls: North Carolina committed 20 to Gotham's 11.
- Interceptions: Gotham 15, North Carolina 5.
- Corners: North Carolina 6, Gotham 2, and the Courage scored off one of them.
What It Means
Gotham improved to 15-6-4 with 51 points and followed a win at Racing Louisville FC with another road victory. After a 3-0 loss at Denver earlier in the month, Gotham has steadied quickly. The first meeting between these clubs, in March, ended 0-0.
North Carolina fell to 12-3-10 with 39 points and has now lost two straight, both 2-1, after falling at San Diego Wave FC a week earlier. According to the Courage, the crowd of 10,551 was the second-highest attendance in club history and the club's third sellout of 2026, a club record. That makes the result sting a little more.
Closing Take
Every great heist movie has a moment where it looks like the crew is about to get caught, and then somebody slips out the side door with the loot. Gotham spent long stretches of the second half defending, watching VAR save it once and the post save it again, and still walked out of Cary with all three points. The Courage did enough to earn a draw. Dudley made sure "enough" did not count.
