Gotham FC and North Carolina Courage Draw 0-0 on Gotham's Championship Ring Night
Gotham FC and the North Carolina Courage played to a 0-0 draw in Gotham's home opener, as Ann-Katrin Berger and Kailen Sheridan both kept clean sheets.

Gotham FC threw itself a party on Saturday night. The North Carolina Courage showed up and politely refused to let anyone have any fun in front of either goal.
The defending NWSL champions and the Courage played to a 0-0 draw at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., in Gotham's 2026 home opener. A club-record home-opener crowd of 10,796 came out, according to Gotham, and the champs held a ring ceremony after the final whistle. Both teams finish the night at 1-1-0 with 4 points, and both goalkeepers kept clean sheets. Per Gotham, these two combined for nine goals in their two meetings last season, which makes a goalless night a genuine plot twist.
Possession Without a Punchline
Gotham owned the ball from the start. Esther González slid a shot just wide in the seventh minute off a Katie Lampson pass, Jaelin Howell tried her luck from distance in the 16th, and González nearly broke through in the 35th minute when her header off a Savannah McCaskill corner sailed just over the bar. Gotham finished with 59.1 percent of possession and completed 462 passes to North Carolina's 294. The problem was the final third. Gotham lined up in a 4-4-2 with Jordynn Dudley and González up top, and the Courage answered with a five-player back line built around Natalia Staude and Maycee Bell that packed the box and left little room to shoot.
The Courage were content to bend, and when they got forward, they were sharp. Feli Rauch headed wide from a Ryan Williams cross in the 17th minute, and North Carolina's best spell came right before the break. Shinomi Koyama skimmed a shot just past the post from a tight angle in the 45th minute, Riley Jackson had a header blocked in stoppage time, and Ashley Sanchez forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save from the left side of the box. Scoreless at the half, with the visitors suddenly looking like the more dangerous side.
Two Saves, Many Near Misses
Rose Lavelle produced Gotham's clearest look of the match a minute into the second half. Lampson whipped in a cross, Lavelle met it from the right side of the six-yard box, and Kailen Sheridan got down to save it low in the corner. That was as close as the champions came.
North Carolina answered in the 58th minute with a frantic sequence. Sanchez had a header blocked, Carly Wickenheiser had a shot blocked, and Sanchez then hit one from outside the box that Berger saved. The Courage then sent on Sydney Schmidt and Evelyn Ijeh a minute later, and Gotham countered with Andrea Kitahata and Tierna Davidson in the 61st.
The final half hour got stretchy, and North Carolina lost captain Natalie Jacobs, who needed treatment twice before going off injured in the 84th minute, replaced by Uno Shiragaki. Ijeh and Schmidt both fired over from distance. Sanchez dragged another long-range attempt narrowly wide in the 89th minute, and Ijeh headed over from very close range in the first minute of seven added. Sofia Cook had the final say for Gotham, blasting high and wide with the final shot of the night.
The Turning Point
For a scoreless draw, the hinge was Berger's 58th-minute save. North Carolina had just had two efforts blocked in the same sequence, and Sanchez's follow-up from distance was the Courage's best chance to steal the champions' party. Berger held it, North Carolina never got another shot on target, and the night tilted toward a stalemate.
Who Stood Out
Sanchez was the most dangerous player on the field. She led everyone with five shots and put two on target, and almost every promising North Carolina moment ran through her. Sheridan was steady, and according to the Courage, she became the fourth goalkeeper in NWSL history to pass 15,000 regular-season minutes during the match.
For Gotham, Berger made two saves as the club kept its second straight clean sheet to open the season, and the back line of Jess Carter, Emily Sonnett, Lilly Reale and Kayla Duran held the Courage to two shots on target. Lavelle had Gotham's only shot on target, while Davidson's appearance off the bench was her first NWSL game since March 28, 2025, per the club. It was also a night of debuts: Kitahata made her professional debut, Talia Sommer made her first NWSL appearance in stoppage time, and the Courage gave NWSL debuts to Schmidt, Ijeh and Shiragaki. Dudley made her first professional start for Gotham.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: North Carolina 14, Gotham 9. Only three were on target all night, two of them North Carolina's.
- Possession: Gotham 59.1 percent, North Carolina 40.9.
- Passing: Gotham attempted 552 passes to North Carolina's 378.
- Interceptions: Gotham made 16 to the Courage's 9.
- Fouls: Ten apiece, with one booking for each side.
What It Means
Gotham, coached by Juan Carlos Amorós, opened with a 1-0 win at Boston Legacy FC and now has two clean sheets in two matches. Per the club, that left it alongside the Houston Dash and Portland Thorns as the only teams to play twice without conceding. "I think for us the main positive is another clean sheet," Amorós said. Gotham hosts expansion side Denver Summit FC on Wednesday in the first meeting between the clubs.
North Carolina is unbeaten after a 2-1 home win over Racing Louisville FC on opening weekend, and a road point at the champion's home opener is a respectable haul. The Courage return home to host Bay FC on Saturday, March 28.
Closing Take
Amorós summed it up honestly. "We kind of neutralized each other in a lot of phases, and we needed somebody to make the difference to be able to get those three points," he said. Think of it as the season premiere of a prestige drama: gorgeous production, a big crowd, a lot of buildup and an ending that leaves everybody waiting for the next episode.
