Jaedyn Shaw's Accidental Stunner and Sophia Wilson's Penalty Leave Gotham FC and Portland Level
Jaedyn Shaw's long-range strike put Gotham FC ahead, but Sophia Wilson converted a 75th minute penalty as Gotham and the Portland Thorns drew 1-1 in Harrison.

Jaedyn Shaw wants you to know she was not trying to do that. Roughly 35 yards from goal on Friday night, she shaped to whip a cross into the box, and the ball had other ideas, bending one way, then the other, and leaving Mackenzie Arnold stranded. The best goals are sometimes the honest accidents.
Shaw's 60th minute strike put Gotham FC in front, but Sophia Wilson answered from the penalty spot 15 minutes later, and Gotham and the Portland Thorns finished 1-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in front of 10,379 fans. Gotham dominated the ball with 73.6 percent possession. Portland took more shots, 17 to 12. Neither side found a winner, and both left with the feeling of a point that could have been three.
A Cagey First Half With Plenty of Saves
This was a chess match early, though the pieces kept getting near the goal. Nina Nijstad forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a save in the second minute, and Wilson tested the Gotham keeper again in the 15th. Gotham's best spell came in the 20s: Sam Kerr headed a Shaw cross toward the top right corner in the 22nd minute only for Arnold to tip it away, then pulled a right-footed shot just wide two minutes later.
Portland responded with a flurry around the half-hour mark. Sam Hiatt headed at Berger in the 28th, Pietra Tordin glanced one wide moments later, and Deyna Castellanos forced another stop in the 29th. Shaw had the last word of the half with a long-range effort that Arnold held in the 44th minute. The fourth official did not even bother adding stoppage time, and the teams went in at 0-0.
The Moment Nobody Planned
The second half opened with more of the same. Castellanos tried her luck from beyond 35 yards in the 46th, Shaw blazed over in the 48th, and Kerr forced Arnold into another save with a header in the 58th. Portland's bench made a double change in the 60th minute, sending on Morgan Weaver and Caiya Hanks.
In that same minute, the game changed. Midge Purce found Shaw, and Shaw's right-footed ball from outside the box wobbled its way into the high center of the net. According to the club, Opta rated the chance at 0.01 expected goals, which is a polite way of saying it should not have gone in.
"I don't think it's a secret: Based on my reaction to the goal, I was trying to cross it," Shaw said. "I'm really happy it went in the goal."
The Turning Point
Gotham then lost some of its shape. Jordynn Dudley, who had been down twice, left in the 69th minute, and acting head coach Shaun Harris made a triple change, sending on Bruninha, Denise O'Sullivan and Taryn Torres. A minute later Portland was swarming. Tordin had two shots blocked from distance, Weaver dragged one wide, and then Tordin went down under a challenge from Jaelin Howell. A video review confirmed the penalty in the 74th minute.
Wilson stepped up in the 75th, Berger guessed wrong, and Wilson rolled a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. According to the Thorns, she has now converted all nine penalty attempts of her career.
Harris was blunt about where it went sideways. "There's a lot of frustration across the group and across the team, and we know we need to be better," he said. "When you're one-up, you're always giving a team the chance to get back in. That's what happened today."
The final 15 minutes plus eight of stoppage time were frantic. Reiten had a shot blocked in the 79th, Shaw had another blocked in the second minute of added time, and Torres headed a Reiten cross straight at Arnold in the fifth. Portland nearly stole it at the death, as Nijstad headed wide in the sixth minute of stoppage time and then forced Berger into one more save a minute later.
Star Turns
Jaedyn Shaw: Four shots, two on target and the goal of her season, accidental or not. It was her team-leading sixth goal of the 2026 regular season, per Gotham, and it tied her with Esther González for the club lead.
Sophia Wilson: Two shots, two on target, one ice-cold penalty. The Thorns said it was her team-high 11th goal of the year, putting her third in the Golden Boot race as of Friday night. She has scored in seven of Portland's last 10 matches and in four straight away games, according to the club.
Ann-Katrin Berger: Five saves, including the late header from Nijstad that kept Gotham's unbeaten run alive.
Pietra Tordin: Five shots and the penalty she drew. Portland's attack ran through her energy.
Midge Purce: Her assist was her first of the 2026 regular season, per Gotham, and the night also marked her 150th career NWSL regular season appearance.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Gotham 73.6 percent, Portland 26.4.
- Shots: Portland 17, Gotham 12.
- Shots on goal: Portland 6, Gotham 5.
- Saves: Berger 5, Arnold 4.
- Interceptions: Portland 15, Gotham 3, which tells you how the Thorns spent the night.
What It Means
Gotham moves to 13-6-3 with 45 points. The club said the result extends its unbeaten run to 10 consecutive matches, a new club record, and that it has not lost since July 4. Gotham also said it leads the league in points from home matches with 25 and holds a seven-point lead atop the table. The season series with Portland ended with two draws, after a 2-2 result in Portland on July 24. Gotham heads to Denver Summit FC next.
Portland improves to 11-5-6 with 38 points and is unbeaten in four straight, per the Thorns, with three wins and a draw. The club also said it was Portland's first point at Gotham since Oct. 1, 2022, snapping a three-game road losing streak there. And in a nice historical footnote, it was the Thorns' 300th regular season game; Portland and Gotham are the first two original NWSL franchises to reach that mark, according to Portland. The Thorns host the Washington Spirit on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Closing Take
Shaw's goal belongs in the same file as every great happy accident, from Post-it Notes to penicillin. Gotham will take the record and the lead. Harris, though, made it clear he would have preferred the boring version: three points and a cross that actually found a teammate.
