Jaedyn Shaw Beats Former Club as Gotham FC Edges San Diego Wave 1-0, Stretches Unbeaten Run to Seven
Jaedyn Shaw scored a minute before halftime, Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves and Gotham FC beat the San Diego Wave 1-0 to run its unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Gotham FC had waited more than two months to play a game at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Jaedyn Shaw had waited nearly three to score. Both droughts ended on the same swing of her right foot.
Shaw curled in the only goal a minute before halftime and Gotham beat the San Diego Wave 1-0 on a stormy Friday night in Harrison, N.J. It was the 21-year-old's first goal since May 15, it came against the club she used to play for, and it pushed Gotham's unbeaten run to seven matches.
A Fast Start in the Rain
Shaun Harris, Gotham's acting head coach, wanted his team on the front foot, and the hosts nearly scored inside the first 20 minutes. In the 16th minute Shaw whipped in a cross and Guro Reiten hit the right post with a left-footed shot from the edge of the six-yard box. A minute later Rose Lavelle, fed by Sam Kerr, forced Sandra Paños into a save at the top right corner, and Savannah McCaskill sent the ensuing corner chance high and wide.
San Diego answered with its best spell of the night. Lia Godfrey dragged a shot just wide in the 19th, and Ann-Katrin Berger saved low from Gia Corley in the 22nd. Then came the moment Gotham's recap singled out: Melanie Barcenas slid a through ball to Trinity Byars in the 25th minute, and Berger, back in goal after sitting out the previous two matches, sprawled to deny her one-on-one.
The Wave lost Kimmi Ascanio to an injury before the break, with Kenza Dali coming on in the 40th minute. Kerr then glanced a header from a Jordynn Dudley cross just past the right post in the 43rd. Gotham was knocking.
Shaw Opens the Door
A minute later, Dudley found Shaw on the left side of the box. Her right-footed shot swerved through traffic, took a hop and beat Paños, who by Gotham's account picked it up late, into the bottom right corner.
It was Shaw's fifth goal of the season and her second against San Diego since joining Gotham, the first of those at home. It was also the third time this season she and Dudley have combined on a goal. Gotham pointed out that the two were born a day apart, the smallest age gap between a goal scorer and an assister in league history. Gen Z, but make it surgical.
The Turning Point
Byars had one more look in first-half stoppage time, pushing a shot from the middle of the box wide to the right on a counterattack. After that, San Diego went quiet. From that miss until Mimi Van Zanten's attempt in the 84th minute, the Wave did not register a shot. Gotham said its defense held them without one for more than a half-hour, and that was the game.
Harris put the plan simply. "It was about being more aggressive," he said, adding that the message had been "getting in their faces and making it really difficult for them to play their game."
Gotham had chances to make it comfortable. Paños saved a Jaelin Howell header in the 62nd minute, Kerr had a shot blocked in the 65th and Lavelle missed narrowly to the left in the 70th. Midge Purce came on for Dudley in the 73rd and nodded a header wide three minutes later.
"There were return chances and we probably should have taken one and killed the game," Harris said, "but people are getting a lot better and the team's in a really good place."
San Diego's last real swing came in the 87th minute, when Adriana Leon, a 66th-minute substitute, met a Kennedy Wesley headed pass and forced Berger into a save at the bottom right corner. The Wave also lost Byars to an injury in the 80th, with Jordan Fusco taking her place.
The Stars
Jaedyn Shaw finished with two shots, one on target, one goal, and the cross that set up Reiten's early post. Gotham said she has now scored the opening goal in five league matches this season.
Jordynn Dudley collected her third assist of her rookie season, and Gotham credited her with a team-high four chances created plus three successful dribbles.
Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves and kept her ninth clean sheet of the regular season. Gotham said it was the 27th of her NWSL regular-season career, tying Portland's Bella Bixby for ninth in league history, and her 34th career win moved her into eighth for the most by a goalkeeper for a single club.
Rose Lavelle led Gotham with four shots in her 50th Gotham start across all NWSL competitions. Elsewhere in the milestone department, Mandy Freeman came off the bench for her 125th regular-season appearance for Gotham, the first player in club history to get there.
For San Diego, Byars put one of her two shots on target before her night ended early, and Paños made two saves.

What It Means
Gotham moves to 12-4-3 with 40 points. The club said the win moved it four points clear of the Washington Spirit at the top of the standings, with Washington still to play the next day. The shutout was Gotham's 12th of the season, making it the sixth club in NWSL history to post 12 or more clean sheets in a single regular season, and its opponents had now gone 307 minutes without scoring. This was also Gotham's third straight 1-0 win, after results at Bay FC and Houston, and its seventh 1-0 win of the season. The unbeaten run dates to a 2-0 loss at San Diego on July 4, so consider that score settled. Kansas City visits on Friday, Aug. 14.
San Diego drops to 10-2-7 with 32 points, five days after a 1-0 win at Washington. The Wave noted that their starting XI averaged 24 years and 346 days, the youngest in an NWSL match this season. They host Denver Summit FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday, Aug. 14.
Closing Take
Every sports fan knows the revenge-game script: the player faces her old team, everyone in the building knows what is coming, and it happens anyway. Shaw's version came with rain, one curling right foot and three points that kept Gotham sitting on top of the table. Hollywood would call it too predictable. Gotham will call it Friday.
