On Wednesday night at Citi Field, 42,175 people watched Ann-Katrin Berger play a one-woman game of Whac-A-Mole against the Washington Spirit, and she won every round.

Gotham FC beat the Spirit 1-0 in the Queens Classic, with Rose Lavelle's 37th-minute strike holding up because Berger made nine saves, including four in a frantic stoppage-time spell. The crowd set a New York City women's sports record and was the second-largest in NWSL history, according to the Spirit. Gotham could have used a few of those fans in the six-yard box late on, but Berger handled it herself.

Lavelle Finds the Corner

Gotham started on the front foot. Jordynn Dudley forced Sandy MacIver into a diving save in the third minute off a Guro Reiten cross, and Esther González put a shot just over the bar in the 11th after Lavelle headed a corner into her path. The Spirit said Gotham had 72 percent of the ball over the opening 15 minutes, which tracks with how one-sided that stretch looked.

Washington found its way into the game through Trinity Rodman. She forced Berger into a save from a tight angle in the 13th minute and then set up Gabrielle Carle, whose shot from the middle of the box Berger kept out in the 28th. Andi Sullivan fired over in the 33rd.

Gotham had to reshuffle when Dudley went off injured in the 34th minute, with Jess Carter replacing her. Three minutes later, Gotham struck anyway. Washington turned the ball over, per the Spirit, Jaelin Howell moved it to Lavelle, and Lavelle worked her way to the left side of the box before lifting a left-footed shot over MacIver and into the top right corner. It was the only goal of the night, and it was a pretty one.

The Turning Point

The goal mattered, but the night really turned on what happened after it: a long run of Spirit pressure that Berger simply absorbed. The fourth official added nine minutes to the first half, and Washington used them. Berger saved a Sullivan drive in the second minute of added time, Carle was booked two minutes later, and Rodman, meeting a Sullivan cross on the left side of the six-yard box, sent it just over the bar in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Gotham went into halftime ahead and a little relieved.

Then Gotham lost González to an injury at the break, with Savannah McCaskill coming on, and the game turned into a test of how long Gotham's back line could bend without breaking.

Washington Turns Up the Pressure

The Spirit leaned on Gotham for most of the second half. Sofia Cantore had a shot blocked in the 59th minute, and Leicy Santos tried her luck from more than 35 yards in the 61st, forcing Berger into a save up in the top left corner. Sullivan sent another effort just over moments later.

Both benches got busy in the 64th minute. Gotham sent on Sam Kerr, and Washington made three changes, bringing on Gift Monday, Rebeca Bernal and Kate Wiesner. Kerr nearly doubled the lead within a minute, running onto a pass from Berger and forcing MacIver into a save. Lavelle headed wide off a set piece in the 72nd, and Rodman fired high in the 76th and again in the 79th.

The ending was chaos. Monday headed at Berger in the 90th minute, and the fourth official put up seven minutes of stoppage time. Santos forced a save in the second added minute. Then, in the fourth, came the flurry: Claudia Martínez shot from the center of the box and Berger saved, Monday followed up and Berger saved again, Rodman had a shot blocked, and Santos let fly from distance and Berger saved that one too. Four Spirit attempts in one minute, zero goals. Washington's last corner, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, came to nothing.

Star Turns

Berger was the obvious headliner, with nine saves and a clean sheet against a team that put nine of its 18 shots on target. She even started the move for Kerr's best chance.

Lavelle scored with her only shot on target and was a constant problem between the lines, finishing with three attempts. Howell provided the assist and the steel in midfield, and Gotham as a team won 21 tackles to Washington's seven.

For the Spirit, Rodman was relentless with five shots, though only one reached the target. Santos put all three of her attempts on frame, and Monday gave Washington a jolt off the bench with two shots on target and a yellow card. MacIver made three saves to keep the Spirit within one.

Discipline was an issue for the visitors. Washington collected four yellow cards, to Carle, Hal Hershfelt, Monday and Tara Rudd, while Gotham was not booked at all.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Washington 18, Gotham 9. Shots on goal: 9-4 Washington.
  • Saves: Berger 9, MacIver 3.
  • Possession: Gotham 52.8 percent, Washington 47.2.
  • Tackles: Gotham 31, Washington 15.
  • Cards: Washington 4 yellows, Gotham 0.

What It Means

Gotham improves to 8-3-3 with 27 points, pulling level on points with Washington, which also sits at 8-3-3 and 27 points. It is a second straight win for Gotham after a 3-1 result at the Utah Royals on Friday, July 10, and there is barely time to celebrate: Gotham hosts Seattle Reign FC at Icahn Stadium on Saturday.

Washington's three-match winning streak is over, after victories over Seattle Reign FC, the Houston Dash and the North Carolina Courage. The Spirit head to Rhode Island for their first meeting with Boston Legacy FC on Sunday, July 19.

Closing Take

Big crowds deserve big moments, and Lavelle gave them one. But the people who packed Citi Field will remember the goalkeeper in stoppage time, diving around her box like the final level of a video game that refused to end. Washington had the shots. Gotham had Berger, and on this night that was the better deal.
