Maggie Graham's Stoppage-Time Winner Lifts Houston Dash Past Angel City 2-1
Maggie Graham scored in the first minute of stoppage time as the Houston Dash beat Angel City FC 2-1 on Saturday for their first win since April 3.

Angelina Anderson spent the better part of 90 minutes playing like a brick wall. Maggie Graham found the one loose brick.
Graham dribbled toward the edge of the box and drove a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner in the first minute of stoppage time, and the Houston Dash beat Angel City FC 2-1 on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium. Rookie Kat Rader had given Houston a 17th-minute lead before Maiara Niehues equalized from the penalty spot in the 26th. The win was Houston's first since April 3, ending a six-match winless run, and it came in front of 6,207 fans.
A Rookie Strikes, a Penalty Answers
Angel City had the early juice. Taylor Suarez and Evelyn Shores both fired wide in the sixth minute, and Caroline DeLisle, making what the Dash said was her first career NWSL start, had to make a save on Carina Lageyre in the 11th.
Houston struck first anyway. Avery Patterson pushed the ball down the right flank, Kate Faasse slipped it to Rader inside the box, and the rookie finished from close range. The Dash said it was Rader's fourth goal of the season, tying her with Lia Godfrey for the most by a rookie this year.
Angel City needed only nine minutes to level it. In the 24th minute Leah Klenke pulled down Kennedy Fuller as she ran onto a chipped ball from Shores, according to Angel City, and Klenke was booked a minute later. Niehues stepped up in the 26th and buried her penalty in the bottom left corner. Angel City said it was the club's first penalty attempt, and first conversion, of the season.
"And it was right after we conceded, and so we needed it, and she just put it in the back of the net," Fuller said.
The first half turned feisty after that, with Emily Sams and Graham both booked inside a three-minute span. Anderson then made the save of the half in the 36th minute, leaping to bat away a Patterson shot headed for the top left corner. Angel City said it controlled 56 percent of possession in the first half and outshot Houston 7 to 2. It went into the break level anyway.
Anderson Versus Everyone
The second half became a shooting gallery aimed at one goalkeeper. Anderson stopped Rader one minute after the restart. She denied substitute Clarissa Larisey in the 74th minute after a through ball from Sophie Schmidt, and she twice turned away long-range efforts from Lisa Boattin in the 79th and 86th minutes.
"It builds a lot of confidence for the team," Fuller said of Anderson's work. "Because it is hard as a goalkeeper, and so when she makes a save, we're able to kind of feed off that energy and want to go score goals."
Angel City did create. Jun Endo, on as a 69th-minute substitute, smashed a left-footed shot off the crossbar in the 83rd minute after a Fuller pass, and DeLisle had to save a Shores header in the 88th. It was a coin flip heading into stoppage time.
The Turning Point: One Touch, Then Graham
The winner came out of nothing. Schmidt played the ball into space for halftime substitute Danielle Colaprico, who found Graham with a through ball. Graham carried it to the edge of the area and finished into the far bottom corner. The Dash said it was her third goal of the season and the sixth of her league career.
Angel City head coach Alex Straus was blunt afterward. "Every game we play is pretty even, and most of the games, we have better numbers than the opponents," he said. "We need to fix those things, those behaviors, to keep the structure, to stay organized for 94 minutes and make the right decisions. That's what's keeping us from being a top team."
Star Turns
Maggie Graham took one shot all night and won the game with it. She also collected a yellow card, so nobody can say she was not involved.
Kat Rader had three shots, put two on target and scored again. Rookie seasons are not supposed to look this comfortable.
Angelina Anderson made five saves for Angel City and was the main reason the visitors were still level in the 90th minute.
Danielle Colaprico came on at halftime and delivered the decisive pass.
Kennedy Fuller drew the penalty, drew four fouls in all and set up Endo's shot off the bar. She was Angel City's most dangerous player.
Stats That Matter
- Accuracy beat volume: Angel City outshot Houston 15 to 11, but the Dash put seven on target to Angel City's three.
- Goalkeeping workload: Anderson made five saves, DeLisle two.
- Corners: Angel City earned six to Houston's one.
- Discipline: Houston was shown four yellow cards, Angel City two.
- Clearing the decks: Houston made 37 clearances to Angel City's 16.
What It Means
Houston moved to 4-2-5 with 14 points and snapped a six-match winless run of two draws and four losses. The Dash closed their two-game homestand with four points, after a 2-2 draw with San Diego on Wednesday, and flipped the result from a 2-1 loss at Angel City in March. They head to Gotham FC on May 31 for what the club called the final match before the summer break.
Angel City fell to 4-1-5 with 13 points. The club said the late goal cost it a chance to earn points in a third straight match in six days, after the win over Kansas City and a scoreless draw in Portland. Angel City hosts the North Carolina Courage on May 31 to close a six-match month.
The Closing Take
Angel City keeps acing the group project and failing the final exam. Better numbers, bigger chances, a goalkeeper standing on her head, and still nothing to show for it in Houston. Straus diagnosed the problem himself. Houston, meanwhile, needed one moment of clarity in stoppage time, and Graham supplied it.
