Kiki van Zanten Scores Twice as Houston Dash Blank Boston Legacy 3-0 for Perfect Start
Kiki van Zanten scored twice and rookie Kat Rader added a goal and an assist as the Houston Dash beat Boston Legacy FC 3-0 to win their first two matches.

The Houston Dash had a penalty saved in the 13th minute and had a goal wiped off the board in the 37th. Somehow, none of it mattered.
Kiki van Zanten scored twice, rookie Kat Rader added a goal and an assist, and Houston beat Boston Legacy FC 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Shell Energy Stadium. The crowd of 10,259 was the largest for a home opener in team history and the second largest for any regular-season game, according to the Dash. Houston moves to 2-0-0 with 6 points, and per the club, it is the first time the Dash have won their first two matches of a season. Boston, which has yet to score in two matches, falls to 0-0-2.
A Penalty Saved, a Goal Erased
Houston pounced early. In the ninth minute, Makenzy Robbe went down under a challenge from Jorelyn Carabalí, and a VAR review confirmed the penalty. Malia Berkely stepped up in the 13th minute and went for the bottom right corner, but Casey Murphy dove the right way and kept it out.
Boston had its moments after that. Alba Caño forced Jane Campbell into a save in the 17th minute, and Nichelle Prince glanced a header just wide five minutes later. Then Houston thought it had the opener in the 37th minute, when Rader's free kick found its way in, but both clubs say it was ruled out for a collision between Maggie Graham and Murphy.
The lead finally came in the 43rd minute. Rader and Linda Ullmark combined at the top of the box, and Ullmark's pass set up van Zanten, who finished with her left foot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. Boston pushed through a whopping 10 minutes of first-half stoppage time, with Caño and Sammy Smith both getting shots blocked and Bárbara Olivieri sending one just over, but it went in down 1-0.
Houston Pulls Away
Smith made Campbell work with a shot to the top corner in the 52nd minute, and Boston sent on Aïssata Traoré four minutes later. The Legacy even had a free kick in the 59th minute, but Carabalí sent it high and wide. Houston made them pay almost immediately. Rader whipped in a cross, and van Zanten got there first to poke it home from close range into the bottom left corner. 2-0.
Six minutes later, it was over. Rader won possession out on the flank, kept the move alive, and when the ball came back to her in the box she smashed it into the top of the goal. Per the Dash, it was the first goal of her professional career.
Murphy kept the score from getting uglier, stopping Ullmark from distance in the 75th minute and Graham's header a minute later. Olivieri nearly found a consolation in the 89th minute, but her shot from outside the box slid just wide. Campbell never had to make another save.
The Turning Point
The 43rd minute. Boston had survived a penalty and a disallowed goal and was within sight of reaching halftime level on the road. Van Zanten's opener, right before a 10-minute stoppage period, flipped that completely. The Legacy had to chase in the second half, and Houston's counterattacking front line feasted on the space.
Van Zanten, Rader and a Rookie Wave
Van Zanten put up three shots, two on target and two goals. The club says she is the first Dash player to score multiple goals in a game since Diana Ordonez in 2024, and these were her first goals of 2026. She is officially cooking.
Rader was just as important. The 21-year-old Duke product scored, assisted van Zanten's second goal and, according to the Dash, became the first rookie to score in the NWSL this season. Ullmark, also a rookie, was the first rookie this season to record an assist, per the club. That is a lot of firsts from a lot of first-year players.
Campbell made two saves for her 44th clean sheet in league play, according to the Dash. On the other side, Murphy was Boston's best player by a distance, finishing with four saves, including the penalty. Smith, making her first NWSL start in Boston's first-ever road match according to the Legacy, tied Olivieri for the team lead with three shots. The Hanson, Mass., native was one of several new faces: Amanda Gutierres made her first NWSL start, and Laurel Ansbrow made her Legacy debut off the bench in the second half, per the club.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on goal: Houston 7, Boston 2. Houston led total shots 16-11.
- Possession: Boston had 59.1 percent and completed 329 passes to Houston's 206. It changed nothing.
- Tackles: Houston won 20 of its 28 tackles.
- Saves: Murphy 4, including the penalty, and Campbell 2.
- From the spot: Houston went 0 for 1 and still won by three.
What It Means
Houston opened the season with a 1-0 win at the San Diego Wave and has now recorded two straight shutouts. Per the club, it was also the second straight match in which the Dash scored the opening goal, a habit any team would happily keep. Next comes a trip to BMO Stadium on Friday, March 27, to face Angel City FC.
Boston opened with a 1-0 home loss to Gotham FC and has yet to find the net. The Legacy, who changed four starters from that opener according to the club, return to Gillette Stadium to host the Utah Royals on Saturday, March 28.
Closing Take
Houston played this one like a video game boss fight where you burn your first two lives and still clear the level with health to spare. The Dash missed a penalty, lost a goal to the whistle and still won by three. If that is their bad-luck version, the rest of the league should be nervous.
