Ashley Sanchez Strikes, 10-Player North Carolina Courage Hold Off Houston Dash 1-0
Ashley Sanchez finished a Manaka Matsukubo pass in the 42nd minute and the North Carolina Courage survived a late red card to beat the Houston Dash 1-0 in Houston.

Manaka Matsukubo spent most of Saturday night in Houston trying to break Jane Campbell. In the 42nd minute she decided to let somebody else have a go, and that one pass was all the North Carolina Courage needed.
Ashley Sanchez ran onto Matsukubo's ball behind the Houston defense and finished across goal, and the Courage made it stand for a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium. They did it the hard way, too, playing the final stretch with 10 players after Ally Schlegel's 77th-minute red card and surviving eight minutes of announced stoppage time that somehow stretched to the 14th minute of added time.
A Shooting Gallery With One Bullseye
The opening 40 minutes were basically Matsukubo against Campbell, with a supporting cast. The Courage star fired over in the third minute, forced a save in the bottom left corner in the fifth and tested her again from outside the box in the 25th. Evelyn Ijeh and Riley Jackson took their turns too, and Shinomi Koyama made it a full rotation with a long-range effort in the 23rd minute that Campbell saved.
Houston was not without its moments. Linda Ullmark sent a shot just wide of the right post in the sixth minute, Kiki Van Zanten headed high and wide in the 26th, and Lisa Boattin, making her first start of the season according to the Dash, smashed a left-footed shot off the crossbar from distance a minute later. It was Houston's best look of the half.
Campbell kept stacking saves. She pushed away a Sanchez attempt to the top right corner in the 40th minute, and Matsukubo skied another chance off a corner a minute after that. Then, in the 42nd, the Courage broke quickly, Matsukubo slipped Sanchez in down the left, and Sanchez's left-footed finish went across Campbell into the bottom right corner. 1-0 at the half.
Holding On, Then Holding On Some More
The second half belonged mostly to Houston's pressure and North Carolina's clearing. Matsukubo nearly doubled the lead in the 48th minute, but Campbell saved her shot from the right side of the six-yard box. At the other end, Kat Rader forced Kailen Sheridan into a save in the 54th minute and again in the 75th.
The Dash leaned on set pieces. Malia Berkely, who came on at the 58-minute mark and joined the Dash in September in a trade from North Carolina, according to Houston, headed wide off a corner in the 72nd minute. Leah Klenke had a header blocked in the 66th, and Ullmark had a shot blocked seconds later.
Then the Courage made life harder for themselves. Schlegel, a 64th-minute substitute, was sent off for violent conduct in the 77th minute. The Dash say the red followed a hard challenge on Danielle Colaprico. Down to 10, North Carolina packed the box and dared Houston to find a way through.
Houston nearly did. Maggie Graham sent a shot just past the top right corner in the 87th minute, Messiah Bright headed over two minutes later, and in the 12th minute of stoppage time, Bright got a chance from very close range off a corner and sent it high and wide. Her final attempt was blocked a minute later, and the whistle went shortly after.
Matsukubo the Engine, Sanchez the Finisher
Matsukubo's line was a monster: eight shots, three on target and the assist on the only goal. The Courage say it was her fifth straight match with a goal contribution, a run going back to the second-to-last game of the 2025 season. She simply never stopped asking questions.
Sanchez's goal was her fourth of the season, and per the Courage it moved her into a tie for second in the Golden Boot race. She put both of her shots on target before giving way to Chioma Okafor, who made her professional debut according to the club.
The defensive stars wore North Carolina colors too. Sheridan made two saves, and the Courage say Maycee Bell made 14 clearances on her own. As a team, North Carolina cleared the ball 38 times and made 32 tackles.
Campbell deserves a shout as well. Seven saves in a 1-0 loss is the goalkeeping version of carrying a group project, and she was the main reason this never got out of hand.
The Turning Point
The 42nd-minute goal was obviously decisive, but the real hinge came in the 77th minute. Schlegel's red card flipped the final half hour from a game North Carolina was managing into a full siege, with 10 Courage players defending a one-goal lead through a long stoppage period. Houston won nine corners to North Carolina's two and attempted 33 crosses, but put only two of its 16 shots on target. The Courage bent all night and never broke.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: North Carolina 8, Houston 2, despite each team attempting 16 shots.
- Saves: Campbell 7, Sheridan 2.
- Clearances: North Carolina 38, Houston 14.
- Tackles: North Carolina 32, Houston 16.
- Corners: Houston 9, North Carolina 2.
What It Means
The Courage move to 2-2-1 with eight points and finally have a second win to go with their opening-day victory over Racing Louisville. They had gone three matches without a win before this, with a scoreless draw at Gotham, a home loss to Bay FC and a 2-2 draw with Portland. This was also their first road win of the season, and North Carolina says it was the club's first win in Houston since 2023. Next comes a trip to Boston Legacy FC on April 29.
Houston drops to 3-0-2 with nine points. The Dash say the result ended a seven-game unbeaten run at home and was the first time they had been shut out at Shell Energy Stadium in 13 games. It was also their first home loss of the season. They stay home to host Seattle Reign FC on Friday, May 1, per the club.
Closing Take
Matsukubo spent the night playing the role of the main character, but the ending came from the supporting cast: a clean finish from Sanchez, a wall of clearances from Bell and a goalkeeper who did not blink through 14 minutes of stoppage time. It was not pretty. Three points on the road rarely are.
