Thirty-four shots. Nine on target. Zero goals. On a rain-soaked Friday night at Shell Energy Stadium, the Houston Dash and Seattle Reign FC played the kind of match that makes you check the scoreboard twice, just to be sure nobody snuck one in while you were refilling your drink.

Nobody did. The Dash and the Reign drew 0-0, with Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell making five saves and Seattle's Claudia Dickey adding four. Houston outshot the visitors 18-16, Seattle put one more effort on frame, and neither side could find the one clean strike that would have turned a grind into a result.

Fireworks Without the Finale

This one started like a shootout. Maddie Mercado tested Campbell from distance inside the first minute, and Linda Ullmark answered for Houston a minute later with a low drive that Dickey pushed away. Kat Rader then made Dickey work again in the seventh minute with a shot from outside the box, which the Reign described as a free kick.

The 12th minute was Campbell's first showcase. Per the Reign, Ainsley McCammon picked off a Houston pass and let fly from range, forcing a sprawling save. Seattle won a corner, kept the pressure on, and Madison Curry tried her luck from outside the box, only for Campbell to stop that one too. Two saves, two corners, and Houston's keeper was already the busiest person in the building.

The rest of the half was a trade of near misses. Sam Meza headed an Emeri Adames corner wide in the 25th minute. Kate Faasse slipped in behind the Seattle back line in the 31st and, per the Reign, tried to lob Dickey, but the ball rolled wide. Kiki Van Zanten forced Dickey into another low save a minute later. Then, in the 39th, Mercado produced the pass of the night, a no-look ball with the outside of her foot that the Reign highlighted, and Mia Fishel's left-footed finish was saved by Campbell.

Seattle's Flurry, Campbell's Answer

The Reign say Houston controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half, and the feed backs that up. Lisa Boattin and Ullmark both had shots blocked, and Ullmark sent another just over the bar in the 57th minute.

Then Seattle flipped the switch. In the 59th and 60th minutes, the Reign launched five attempts in a frantic two-minute burst. Fishel missed to the right, Emily Mason and Maddie Dahlien had shots blocked, McCammon fired wide after a corner, and Fishel finally got one on target, only for Campbell to keep it out at the bottom left corner. If there was a moment this match was going to crack open, that was it.

The Turning Point

That 60th-minute sequence is where this game was decided, or rather where it refused to be. Seattle had numbers in the box, second balls falling its way and a striker getting shots off in the middle of the area. Campbell and a crowded Houston penalty area absorbed all of it. A few minutes later, both coaches went to the bench, with Sally Menti replacing Fishel for Seattle, and the match never quite regained that intensity.

Houston had its own chances late. Avery Patterson drove into the box in the 74th minute, and while ESPN's feed lists the shot as blocked, the Reign say the deflection struck the near post. Dickey then saved a Van Zanten effort from the middle of the box in the 75th. Phoebe McClernon came up with a pair of blocks inside the box in the closing stages, per the Reign, and Hardin, a 73rd-minute substitute, headed a Rader corner delivery just over in stoppage time. That was the last real look.

The Keepers Steal the Show

Jane Campbell was the best player on the field. Five saves, three of them in the first 12 minutes, and a clean sheet against a Seattle side that peppered her from every angle. It was Houston's third shutout of the season, after a 1-0 win at San Diego Wave FC and a 3-0 win over Boston Legacy FC in March.

Claudia Dickey matched her nearly stroke for stroke with four saves, including three low stops in the first half and the late save on Van Zanten. The Reign say it was Seattle's third clean sheet in its first seven matches, against a Houston team that had scored nine goals in its first five.

Maddie Mercado was Seattle's engine. The Reign moved her into an attacking midfield role with Fishel leading the line, and she responded by creating chances all night. She had two shots, one on target, and also picked up a yellow card in the 39th minute.

For Houston, Linda Ullmark led all players with four shots, and Avery Patterson added three from right back. Mia Fishel had three shots for Seattle, two of them on target, both saved by Campbell.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Houston 18, Seattle 16. On target: Seattle 5, Houston 4.
  • Saves: Campbell 5, Dickey 4.
  • Possession: Seattle 52.3 percent, Houston 47.7.
  • Discipline: Seattle collected four yellow cards, Houston none.
  • Crosses: Both teams attempted 18. Seattle completed 6, Houston 2.

What It Means

Neither side won, and neither side lost, but the context cuts differently for each. Seattle moves to three wins, two draws and two losses with 11 points. The Reign have now gone three straight matches without scoring, after a 0-0 draw with Denver Summit FC on April 4 and a 3-0 home loss to the Utah Royals on April 26. Their last goal came in a 2-1 win over Racing Louisville FC on March 28. Seattle hosts the Washington Spirit on Sunday, May 10.

Houston sits at three wins, one draw and two losses with 10 points. The Dash have also been shut out in back-to-back matches, following a 1-0 home loss to the North Carolina Courage on April 25, but the clean sheet is a welcome sign for a defense that had allowed six goals in its first five games. Houston visits the Utah Royals on Wednesday, May 6.

The Final Word

Some 0-0 draws are dull. This was not one of them. It was a 90-minute trailer for a movie that never came out: explosions, close calls, a couple of plot twists, and then the credits rolled before anyone got the payoff. Campbell and Dickey were the leads, and they earned top billing. Both attacks will want a rewrite before the sequel.
