Five minutes. That is how long it took CPKC Stadium to go from stunned to deafening on Sunday, and how long it took Croix Bethune to climb above everybody who has ever played in the NWSL in one very specific column of the stat sheet.

The Kansas City Current came from behind to beat the Washington Spirit 2-1 in front of 18,000 fans. Clara Luvanga put Washington ahead in the 12th minute, Lo'eau LaBonta equalized 79 seconds later, and Vanessa DiBernardo curled in the winner in the 17th off Bethune's 11th assist of the season, which the club says is a new NWSL single-season record. After that, Kansas City spent the rest of the game bending without breaking against a Spirit side that held 61.3 percent of the ball.

Five Minutes of Mayhem

The opening was pure chaos. Washington struck first when Luvanga, per the Spirit, jumped on a mistake by Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena in the box, stole the ball and finished into an empty net for her second career NWSL goal.

The lead barely survived long enough to celebrate. LaBonta squared a pass to Michelle Cooper on the right, Cooper rolled a low ball across the area, and when a Spirit defender redirected it, LaBonta arrived first and hit a half-volley that trickled past goalkeeper Sandy MacIver into the bottom right corner. The club says it was the Current's 38th goal at CPKC Stadium this season, a new single-season record for goals at home.

Then came the knockout. On a Spirit goal kick in the 17th minute, Haley Hopkins charged into the box, picked the ball off MacIver's foot inside the six-yard box and laid it back for Bethune, who rolled it across for DiBernardo at the penalty spot. DiBernardo's curling finish ripped into the top right corner. Washington's afternoon got worse three minutes later, when Hal Hershfelt went off injured and Mélissa Bethi replaced her.

The Siege

Washington spent the second half camped in Kansas City's half. Rosemonde Kouassi came on at halftime, and the Spirit owned 67 percent of the ball across the first 15 minutes after the break, per Washington's recap, without landing a shot on target. Bethune picked up a yellow card in the 48th minute and gave way to Debinha in the 60th.

The pressure finally produced real chances late. Trinity Rodman fired one just wide from outside the box in the 75th minute, and two minutes later Lorena made a double save, first denying Rodman and then smothering Kouassi's follow-up from the six-yard box. Tara Rudd's header was blocked in the 80th, and Bethi's volley off a corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time sailed just over. Washington crossed the ball 22 times and completed five. Kansas City cleared 21 balls and survived.

Records on Records

Bethune's line looked modest on paper: one shot on target, one assist, one yellow card. But that assist broke a tie for the league's single-season record that she shared with her own 2024 season in Washington, Cloé Lacasse's 2026 campaign with Utah and Tobin Heath's 2016 season with Portland. It was also her sixth game-winning assist of 2026, another single-season NWSL record, according to the club. Breaking a record you set with your opponent is a deeply petty flex, and we respect it.

DiBernardo's goal arrived in her 200th NWSL regular-season appearance, and the Current say she is the fifth player in league history to reach that mark. It was her first goal of 2026 and her first in NWSL play since Nov. 17, 2024. Lorena, meanwhile, shook off the early error to finish with two saves, both in that 77th-minute sequence. Rodman did everything but score for Washington, taking five shots.

The Turning Point

Hopkins' press on that goal kick decided the match. Washington tried to play out from the back, Hopkins refused to let it happen, and two passes later Kansas City had a lead it never gave back. In a game where the Spirit had the ball for most of the day, the only thing that mattered was one moment when they did not.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Washington 61.3 percent, Kansas City 38.7.
  • Shots: Washington led 12-7, but each team put three on target.
  • Crosses: Washington attempted 22 and completed five.
  • Clearances: Kansas City 21, Washington 16.
  • Saves: Lorena 2, MacIver 1.

What It Means

Kansas City improves to 15-5-9 with 50 points, and the club lists itself fourth, with Washington third at 16-4-9 and 52 points. The Current had already secured a postseason berth Friday night through results elsewhere, and this win was about something bigger. Chris Armas framed it as a test of his team and a fight "for a home playoff game for us and our fans."

"We find out a lot about ourselves in these games," the head coach said. "We really earned that victory tonight."

The milestones keep piling up. Per the club, it was Kansas City's fourth straight win, its longest streak of the season, and it stretched a league-record home unbeaten run to 32 matches. It was also the Current's 11th home win this season, matching a franchise record set in 2025, and their sixth come-from-behind win, tying 2014 Seattle for the most in a single NWSL season.

Washington's loss came eight days after it beat Gotham 1-0, and it reversed the result of the Spirit's 4-0 win over Kansas City at Audi Field in April. The Spirit host Chicago on Nov. 1 looking to lock up a home quarterfinal, while Kansas City closes at Racing Louisville as all eight Decision Day matches kick off at the same time.

Closing Take

This one played out like a heist movie. Kansas City pulled the job in the first act, then spent the rest of the runtime hiding in the vents while Washington searched every room. The Spirit came close, but the Current walked out with the loot, and Bethune walked out with the record book.
