Debinha's Record 84th Goal in All NWSL Competitions Earns KC Current 1-1 Draw With Seattle Reign
Debinha's 51st-minute penalty, her NWSL-record 84th goal across all competitions, earned the Kansas City Current a 1-1 draw with Seattle Reign FC despite 24 shots.

Kansas City took 24 shots, rattled the woodwork three times and still could not beat Claudia Dickey from open play. That is the kind of night it was at CPKC Stadium, where history arrived on schedule and the three points never did.
The Kansas City Current and Seattle Reign FC drew 1-1 on Saturday evening in front of 11,500 fans. Kayla Sharples put the ball into her own net in the 11th minute to hand Seattle the lead, and Debinha leveled it from the spot in the 51st. Per the Current, that penalty was Debinha's 84th career goal across all NWSL competitions, a league record.
A Gift, Then a Siege
Seattle came out sharp. Maddie Mercado forced a save from Lorena in the fifth minute, and six minutes later the Reign cashed in on a set piece. Captain Sofia Huerta took a short corner and floated a ball toward the far post, Ainsley McCammon got her head to it, and the final touch came off Sharples on its way in. Brutal timing for the defender, too. The Current noted it came in her 100th career regular-season appearance.
From there, Kansas City turned the first half into a shooting gallery. Michelle Cooper nearly equalized with a header in the 21st minute. Croix Bethune smashed a volley off the crossbar in the 36th after a corner, then pulled another effort wide a minute later. Debinha sent a free kick over in the 39th. In stoppage time, Izzy Rodriguez forced a save from Dickey, Debinha headed a Bethune cross off the left post, and Lo'eau LaBonta cracked a shot off the bar that, per the Current, bounced down and struck Dickey's back before the Seattle keeper gathered it. Somehow it was still 1-0 Seattle at the break.
Debinha Writes Her Line in the Record Book
The second half opened like the first ended. Kansas City won back-to-back corners, LaBonta and Haley Hopkins had shots blocked, and in the 48th minute Mia Fishel was penalized for a handball in the box. VAR confirmed the call, and Debinha rolled her right-footed penalty into the bottom right corner.
The Current laid out the milestones: it was Debinha's fifth goal of the 2026 season, her NWSL-record 84th across all competitions, and her 60th in the regular season, which moved her into a tie for fourth in league history. She nearly added another in the 64th minute when, per the club, her chip cleared a diving Dickey and rolled just past the post.
Seattle never folded. Lorena raced out to deny Maddie Dahlien when she broke through in the 70th, Huerta found the side netting in the 76th, and substitute Brittany Ratcliffe forced a save in the 86th. Ten minutes of stoppage time produced one last scare, an Amelia White shot that Seattle substitute Emily Mason threw her body in front of, and that was that.
Who Showed Up
Debinha led everyone with six shots, two on target and the goal that mattered. Bethune was the most dangerous creator on the field, firing four shots and hitting the bar, though she also picked up a yellow card in the 72nd.
Kansas City's milestone night went well beyond Debinha. The club said LaBonta became the 10th player in NWSL history to reach 200 career regular-season appearances, Rodriguez set a club record with her 47th consecutive regular-season start, and Elizabeth Ball made her 100th regular-season start.
For Seattle, Jordyn Bugg was the backbone. The Reign credited her with a team-high five interceptions, five clearances and three tackles won, and Seattle as a whole logged 22 interceptions to Kansas City's 14. Mercado put both of her shots on target. Dickey made only two saves, but the woodwork made three more on her behalf.
The Turning Point
Fishel's handball three minutes after the restart flipped the night. Kansas City had dominated the first half without breaking through, and the visitors were 45 minutes from a smash-and-grab. Instead, the Current had their equalizer before the second-half crowd had settled in, and Seattle spent the rest of the evening defending instead of counterpunching.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Kansas City 24, Seattle 8. The Current called it a season high.
- Shots on goal: Seattle 4, Kansas City 3. Volume is not the same thing as accuracy.
- Woodwork: Kansas City hit the frame three times, all in the first half.
- Possession: Kansas City 55.3 percent.
- Discipline: Seattle collected four yellow cards to Kansas City's one.
What It Means
Kansas City moves to 9-4-8 with 31 points, which the club said left it seventh. Seattle sits at 8-4-8 with 28 points, eighth by the Current's count. For the hosts, this extends a frustrating run to four matches without a win: draws with Angel City and Houston, a 2-1 loss at Gotham and now this. Their last victory was a 5-1 thumping of Racing Louisville on July 29.
Seattle will take the point. The Reign were playing three days after a 2-1 loss at Louisville on Wednesday, and they now have four points from two meetings with Kansas City this season after a 3-0 home win in March. Per the Reign, this was only the second time they have earned points on the road against the Current in the NWSL regular season, and the all-time series now stands at seven Seattle wins, six losses and two draws.
Current head coach Chris Armas saw the glass half full. "It's not all the points that we wanted on the night, and we had to come from behind, but I give the team a lot of credit for the way they stepped on the pitch," he said.
He also pointed at the stretch run. "We're getting stronger, not weaker. We're going to be ready for this final nine-game push, with two of the next three at home, with a lot to play for here," Armas said.
Kansas City stays home to host the North Carolina Courage on Aug. 29, while Seattle returns to Lumen Field to face the Houston Dash on Aug. 30.
Closing Take
Kansas City spent the night playing Plinko with the crossbar and kept watching the chip bounce into the wrong slot. Debinha's record goal gives the evening a headline worth framing, but a team that takes 24 shots at home should not be leaning on milestones for comfort. Seattle, meanwhile, left with a point it did not entirely earn and will absolutely keep.
