Three nights after getting torched for six goals in St. Louis, the LA Galaxy needed a palate cleanser. Marco Reus served one up, with a goal, an assist and the kind of quiet control that makes a frantic week feel manageable.

The Galaxy beat the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in front of 13,377, per the Timbers. Reus finished a slick team move in the 17th minute and then dropped a free kick onto Justin Haak's head for the clincher in the 80th, while JT Marcinkowski posted what the club called his fourth clean sheet of the regular season.

Reus Gets There First

The opener was a lesson in economy. Pablo Ruiz floated a long diagonal over Portland's back line, Robert Taylor brought it down and cut it back across the box, and Reus swept a first-time, left-footed finish into the bottom right corner from the middle of the area. One move, one goal, zero panic.

LA had the better of the first half after that. James Pantemis had to save from João Klauss in the 21st minute after Joseph Paintsil set him up, and Calegari tested the Portland keeper from distance in the 38th. Paintsil was making his first regular-season start for the Galaxy since Aug. 29, per the club.

The half had a nasty edge to it. Ruiz was booked in the 29th minute, Sergi Roberto two minutes later and Portland's Jimer Fory in the 38th. Kristoffer Velde had the Timbers' best look right before the break, but Marcinkowski got down to his shot in stoppage time and the Galaxy went in 1-0 up.

Portland's Push, Marcinkowski's Night

The Timbers came out of halftime with real intent, and for about 15 minutes the Galaxy were hanging on. Haak picked up a yellow card in the 47th minute, and the resulting set piece produced two Portland headers in quick succession, one from José Caicedo and one from Vincent Janssen, both off target.

In the 50th minute, Kamal Miller rose to meet an Ariel Lassiter cross and Marcinkowski clawed it out of the top left corner. Velde fired one just wide a minute later and then forced Marcinkowski into another save in the 54th. Janssen headed wide in the 58th, Velde dragged another effort just past the post in the 60th, and Lassiter missed narrowly from distance in the 64th. Portland were knocking, loudly, and nobody was answering.

Greg Vanney made a triple change in the 72nd minute, sending on Lucas Sanabria, Erik Thommy and Harbor Miller for Roberto, Taylor and Paintsil. Eight minutes later, the Galaxy found the dagger.

Set-Piece Special

In the 80th minute, Reus stood over a free kick just outside the box, whipped it in, and Haak arrived at full speed to head it into the top right corner from point-blank range. It was the defender's second goal of the season, both in the last three matches, according to the Galaxy.

Reus explained afterward that the run was no accident. "Justin's goal today was really nice. It was coming with so much speed," he said, adding that he had told Haak and Klauss to go to the first post because the second post "makes no sense" against that kind of run.

Reus came off in the 82nd minute for Elijah Wynder, and Maya Yoshida came on to help see it out. Ronald Hernández sent one just wide deep in stoppage time, and that was Portland's last real look.

Star Turns

Marco Reus had one shot all night and scored with it, then assisted the second. The Galaxy said it was his eighth goal of the season and that he has now been involved in 19 of the club's 41 league goals, with eight goal contributions in his last seven matches.

JT Marcinkowski made three saves, the biggest on Miller's header right after halftime. Vanney's verdict on the clean sheet: "We got a shutout. I mean that for me is huge."

Justin Haak was booked two minutes into the second half and still finished as the man who put the match away.

Robert Taylor got the primary assist on the opener, extending his run of matches with a goal or assist to four, per the club.

Kristoffer Velde was Portland's most dangerous player with a match-high six shots, two of them on target.

The Turning Point

The match swung in the 15 minutes after halftime. Portland took nine shots between the 48th and 64th minutes and put just two on target, and Marcinkowski saved both. The Timbers did not put another shot on target after the 54th minute. LA weathered the storm, and Reus made the Timbers pay for not finishing it.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Portland 12, LA 9, but the Galaxy put five on target to Portland's three.
  • Possession: Portland had 54.1 percent of the ball.
  • Crosses: Portland attempted 27 crosses and completed four.
  • Clearances: LA made 23 to Portland's 13.

What It Means

LA moved to 10-9-11 (wins, draws, losses) with 39 points and bounced back from Sunday's 6-2 loss in St. Louis. Vanney put it plainly: "When you give away six, a lot of things have to go wrong to bounce back and get a zero." Taylor framed it as a response for the home crowd: "As I said earlier about the turnover after St. Louis, it was important to show up and get the fans going again." The Galaxy stay home to close a three-match week against San Diego FC on Saturday.

Portland fell to 9-6-14 with 33 points. The Timbers said they sit 10th in the Western Conference with five matches left, and that four of those five opponents were above the playoff line at the time. They have now gone six league matches without a win and return home to host Colorado on Saturday.

The Closing Take

Vanney summed up his playmaker in a sentence: "He, again, is just so smart and smooth and aware." On a night when the Galaxy did not have their best legs, they had the best brain on the field. Sometimes that is all a playoff push needs.
