Houston Dynamo FC had a sellout crowd, a club legend on the bench and, for 45 minutes, a perfectly respectable game plan. Then the red cards started, and the night turned into a slow, orderly LAFC takeover.

LAFC beat nine-man Houston 2-0 on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium. Mark Delgado broke the deadlock with a strike from outside the box in the 56th minute and Stephen Eustáquio doubled it from distance in the 82nd, after the Dynamo lost captain Antônio Carlos to a red card in first-half stoppage time and Agustín Bouzat to another in the 76th minute.

Two goals from range, both off corners, both against a short-handed defense that had simply run out of bodies. LAFC is now 2-0-0 and still has not conceded a league goal this season.

Houston Had Its Moments

For the first quarter of an hour, the hosts were the livelier side. Guilherme had a shot blocked in the 6th minute, and back-to-back corners produced three more Houston attempts in the 7th: Carlos headed wide, Lucas Halter's header was blocked and a Jack McGlynn shot was blocked too. In the 16th minute McGlynn swung in a cross and Carlos met it from point-blank range, only for Hugo Lloris to save in the center of the goal.

LAFC, set up in a 4-2-3-1, took a while to find its rhythm. Denis Bouanga fired high and wide in the 11th minute, David Martínez did the same a minute later, and Son Heung-Min went close from the left side of the six-yard box in the 26th after an Eddie Segura through ball.

The best sequence of the half belonged to Jonathan Bond. In the 37th minute he saved a Bouanga effort from the left side of the box, got back to his feet and denied Son's follow-up from the middle. McGlynn and Bouanga were both booked along the way.

Then, in first-half stoppage time, Carlos was sent off. Per the Dynamo, he was judged to have fouled Son outside the box. Houston went into halftime level and down a man.

From 10 Men to 9

Houston reshuffled at the break, with Agustín Resch replacing Ondrej Lingr. The Dynamo said Resch, a rookie signed to a short-term loan for this match, was making his debut. Bouzat nearly gave the crowd something to cheer in the 47th minute with a shot from more than 35 yards that Lloris saved in the top left corner.

LAFC's patience paid off in the 56th minute. From a corner, Son found Delgado outside the box, and Delgado drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. It was his only shot of the night.

The 76th minute was a strange little time capsule. Héctor Herrera, whom the Dynamo call a club legend, came on for Duane Holmes, his first appearance for Houston since the 2024 season, and the club said the sellout crowd roared its approval. In the same minute Bouzat was shown red, according to Houston for fouling Son as the last defender on an LAFC attack.

Eleven against nine did not take long to tell. Timothy Tillman went close in the 80th minute, Bouanga had a shot blocked in the 81st, and from the corner that followed in the 82nd Delgado teed up Eustáquio, who struck a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner.

Houston kept swinging. Lawrence Ennali forced Lloris into a low save from a tight angle in the 85th minute, and Bond made two more stops, on Eustáquio in the 88th and substitute Amin Boudri in stoppage time. In the 88th minute the Dynamo also sent on Matthew Arana, who, according to the club, became the youngest player in Dynamo history to earn first-team minutes. He is 15.

The Difference Makers

Mark Delgado had a goal and an assist from one shot, and both of his contributions came from corner situations. A yellow card in the 51st minute did not slow him down.

Stephen Eustáquio put both of his shots on target and finished the job with a clean strike from distance.

Son Heung-Min took five shots, assisted the opener and, per Houston's account, was the player fouled on both red cards. That is a lot of chaos created by one forward.

Jonathan Bond made four saves and kept a nine-man team within reach for most of the night. The 37th-minute double save was the best goalkeeping moment of the match.

Hugo Lloris made three saves, including the point-blank stop on Carlos, to keep his second straight clean sheet in league play.

The Turning Point

Carlos's red card in first-half stoppage time. Houston had held its own for long stretches, but playing a full half with 10 men against a side that ended with 70.8 percent possession was always going to be a slog. The Dynamo held out for 11 minutes after the restart before Delgado found the corner.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: LAFC 70.8 percent, Houston 29.2 percent.
  • Shots: LAFC 18 (6 on target), Houston 12 (3 on target).
  • Passing: LAFC completed 692 of 738 passes; Houston completed 251 of 300.
  • Saves: Bond 4, Lloris 3.
  • Corners: LAFC 8, Houston 4. Both goals came from corner situations.

What It Means

LAFC moves to 2-0-0 with 6 points after a 3-0 home win over Inter Miami on Feb. 21. The club said this was the first time in its history it has won its first four matches of the year across all competitions, outscoring opponents 12-1 in that run, and that it was LAFC's first win in Houston since July 12, 2019. FC Dallas visits BMO Stadium next, on Saturday, March 7.

Houston drops to 1-0-1 with 3 points after opening with a 2-1 home win over the Chicago Fire. The Dynamo can at least point to a few positives: Bond's form, a debut for Resch, a historic first appearance for Arana and Herrera back in a Dynamo shirt in front of a full house.

Closing Take

This was less a soccer match than a game of musical chairs where the music kept stopping on Houston. LAFC never had to be spectacular. It kept the ball, waited for the space to open up and hit two clean shots from outside the box when it did. With nine men, you can defend the box or you can defend the edge of it. Houston found out the hard way that you cannot do both.
