Bouanga and Son Outshine Messi as LAFC Rout Inter Miami 3-0 Before 75,673 at the Coliseum
Denis Bouanga scored and assisted, Son Heung-Min set up the opener and LAFC beat Inter Miami 3-0 in front of 75,673 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Inter Miami brought the champion's banner, the reigning MVP and more than two-thirds of the ball to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. LAFC brought a sharper plan. In front of 75,673 fans on Saturday night, the Black & Gold took apart the MLS Cup holders 3-0, with David Martínez, Denis Bouanga and Nathan Ordaz scoring and Son Heung-Min and Bouanga doing the playmaking.
Lionel Messi drew a roar or a jeer with every touch, but he rarely threatened. He finished with four shots and none on target, and Miami, for all its 767 passes, put three attempts on frame all night. MLS said the crowd made it the highest-attended game in MLS opening weekend history and the league's second-highest standalone attendance of all time, behind only the 82,110 at the Rose Bowl for El Tráfico on July 4, 2023. Commissioner Don Garber explained the change of address simply: "This game would have sold out five times at BMO, but we wanted to do something special."
LAFC Knock Early, Then Break the Door
LAFC wasted no time testing Miami's new goalkeeper, Dayne St. Clair. Son teed up Bouanga in the sixth minute and St. Clair saved, Bouanga dragged one just wide in the 10th, and Son had two efforts blocked in the 14th as the home side won three corners between the 14th and 17th minutes. Miami's best answer came in the 22nd, when Messi threaded a through ball to Germán Berterame and Hugo Lloris saved low.
The opener arrived in the 37th minute. Stephen Eustáquio, playing as a holding midfielder in what MLS called his long-awaited MLS debut, found Son at the top of the box. Son slipped Martínez in, and the 20-year-old swept a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner. 1-0.
The first half ran seven minutes over, and both sides nearly used it. Martínez, sent away on a Bouanga-led break, rolled a shot just wide in the sixth minute of stoppage time, and two minutes later Messi sent a left-footed attempt from distance just wide.
Miami Push, Lloris Says No
Miami came out of the break with a purpose. Facundo Mura replaced Ian Fray at halftime and was involved right away. Messi fired over in the 50th minute, Mateo Silvetti forced a Lloris save in the 51st, and Mura had two shots blocked in the next two minutes. In the 63rd, Mura crossed for Berterame, whose header from the middle of the box slid just wide of the right post. LAFC's match report called it the Herons' most promising chance of the night.
Marc Dos Santos, coaching his first game as LAFC head coach, was content to let Miami keep the ball and wait for a counter. It came.
The Turning Point: Bouanga Wins the Footrace
In the 73rd minute, Timothy Tillman launched a long ball toward the Miami box. St. Clair charged off his line to cut it out. Bouanga got there first, nodded the ball past the onrushing keeper and finished with his right foot into an empty net. 2-0, and the Coliseum went up like a fireworks finale.
Tadeo Allende, on in the 68th, forced Lloris into another save in the 79th from a Messi pass, and Luis Suárez came on in the 81st, but the visitors never found the clean look the possession numbers promised. Bouanga and Telasco Segovia were both booked in the 80th after a Segovia foul on Bouanga.
Son set up Bouanga for a shot that was blocked in the 87th, then made way for Ordaz in the 89th. Ordaz, a Los Angeles native and Homegrown forward per the club, did not need long: in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Bouanga picked him out and Ordaz finished from very close range. 3-0.
"It's good to win like this and still have so much margin to progress," Dos Santos said. "Now we want to play and build the team."
Star Watch
Denis Bouanga was the best player on the field: seven shots, three on target, one goal and one assist. LAFC said the goal was his 105th in an LAFC shirt across all competitions, extending his lead as the club's all-time leading scorer. The AP noted he had a hat trick in the Concacaf Champions Cup earlier in the week and finished second to Messi in last season's Golden Boot race. "The atmosphere in the stadium was nice for the team," Bouanga said.
Son Heung-Min did not score, but his fingerprints were on the opener and on several of LAFC's best moments. The club said his assist was his fifth, and his 17th goal contribution, in 14 league games since joining in August 2025, playoffs included.
Hugo Lloris made three saves and, per the club, recorded his 25th MLS regular-season clean sheet. In front of him, Eddie Segura, Sergi Palencia, Nkosi Tafari and Ryan Porteous combined to clear 21 balls.
For Miami, the numbers tell a cruel story. Messi had four shots, none on target. Berterame had two, one on target. Dos Santos admitted LAFC had planned for the worst: "When we prepared for the game, we prepared to face the best Messi possible."

What It Means
LAFC opens at 1-0-0 with 3 points. The club said the result made it 9W-0L-0D all-time in MLS regular-season openers, extending its own league record for consecutive wins in season-opening games. Next up is the second leg against Real España in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Tuesday at BMO Stadium, with a 6-1 aggregate lead, before LAFC visits Houston Dynamo FC on Feb. 28.
Inter Miami starts its title defense at 0-0-1 with 0 points. The AP noted the club lost Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba to retirement and added Berterame and St. Clair, and on this evidence the new pieces still need time. Miami visits Orlando City on Sunday, March 1.
"That quality of being able to suffer as a team together is an important quality for a team," Dos Santos said, a few days after a midweek trip to Honduras.
Closing Take
Hollywood loves a star vehicle, and this one was billed as Messi against Son. LAFC rewrote it as an ensemble piece: a 20-year-old's opener, the club's all-time leading scorer winning a footrace, a hometown kid's late finish and a veteran keeper's clean sheet. Miami had the ball. LAFC had the plot.
