Ten-Man Whitecaps Clinch Playoff Spot in 1-1 Draw at LAFC as Bouanga Answers Larraz
Down to 10 men after six minutes, the Vancouver Whitecaps drew 1-1 at LAFC as Oliver Larraz scored and Denis Bouanga answered, a point that clinched a playoff place.

Six minutes. That is how long the Vancouver Whitecaps got to play with a full team at BMO Stadium on Saturday night. Jacob Shaffelburg broke clear, Tristan Blackmon brought him down, and the red card turned the Western Conference leaders into a 10-man rescue mission against an LAFC side hungry for a fresh start.
The rescue mission went better than anyone had a right to expect. Oliver Larraz put Vancouver ahead just before halftime, Denis Bouanga headed LAFC level almost the moment the second half kicked off, and the night ended 1-1. There was no winner, but the point was enough to send the Whitecaps into the MLS Cup Playoffs, and the club says it is the first time in its history it has qualified in four consecutive seasons.
A Red Card and a Rewrite
This was Xavi Tamarit's debut as LAFC's interim head coach, per the club, and LAFC arrived without a win in its previous three league matches. An early red card for the visitors felt like the soccer gods handing the new guy a housewarming gift.
LAFC's report says Blackmon was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and Vancouver's account has Son Heung-Min springing Shaffelburg on the counter before the collision. Jesper Sørensen did not wait around. In the 10th minute he sent on Mathías Laborda for Emmanuel Sabbi, swapping a winger for a defender and rebuilding the shape on the fly.
Son had already forced Yohei Takaoka into a save from distance in the ninth minute, but Vancouver kept answering. Ryan Gauld slipped Brian White through in the 21st minute, and Hugo Lloris smothered the shot. Six minutes later, Son got a clean look from the middle of the box off an Armindo Sieb cross, and Takaoka swallowed that one too.
Then the visitors struck. In the 43rd minute, Édier Ocampo swung in a cross, Larraz's header was pushed away by Lloris, and Larraz beat everyone to the rebound to rifle it into the roof of the net from the right side of the six-yard box. Vancouver says it was his first goal for the club. Sieb tested Takaoka deep in first-half stoppage time, but the 10 men went to the locker room in front.
Forty Seconds
Tamarit made his move at halftime, sending on Igor Jesus for Mathieu Choinière, who had been booked in the 25th minute. It barely had time to matter. Vancouver's report clocks the equalizer at 40 seconds after the restart: Sergi Palencia whipped in a cross from the right and Bouanga glanced a header from the center of the box into the top right corner.
Bouanga thought he had a second not long after, but the offside flag ended the celebration. From there, the half became a test of LAFC's patience and Vancouver's lungs. The Whitecaps had their own window around the 55th minute, when Ocampo and White both had efforts blocked during a spell of corners. LAFC kept circling. Sieb headed high and wide in the 69th minute, substitute Leo Walta skied one from distance in the 74th, and Ryan Hollingshead had a shot blocked from a tight angle in the 83rd.
Igor Jesus, Ocampo, Hollingshead and Laborda were all booked after the 70th minute, and Takaoka spent the closing stretch claiming crosses like he was collecting rent. Added time came and went without a winner.
Who Delivered
Yohei Takaoka was Vancouver's Man of the Match according to the club, and it is hard to argue. Three saves, two of them against Son, plus a steady stream of crosses snatched out of the air when LAFC tried to bully a short-handed back line.
Oliver Larraz took two shots and put both on target, scoring with the second. The club counts it as his fifth goal contribution (one goal, four assists). He also showed the kind of instinct that never shows up in a passing chart: he followed his own header.
Denis Bouanga needed exactly one shot. LAFC says the header was his 15th regular-season goal of the year and his 80th regular-season goal for LAFC, making him the 30th player in league history to reach 80 regular-season goals. The club also says he is one of four players with at least 15 goals in each of the last three seasons, alongside Lionel Messi, Petar Musa and Brian White.
Édier Ocampo was everywhere. He won five fouls, committed four, took two shots, picked up a yellow and supplied the cross that started the opening goal.
Armindo Sieb brought volume: five shots, the most on the field, but only one troubled Takaoka.
The Turning Point
The red card shaped the match, but the 40 seconds after halftime decided its ceiling. Vancouver had carried a lead into the break while down a man, and every minute LAFC spent chasing would have made the building tighter. Bouanga erased that pressure immediately. The strange part is what happened next: LAFC had the extra man for the entire second half and, per ESPN's play-by-play, did not put another shot on target after the equalizer. The door was open and nobody walked through it.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Vancouver had 52.2 percent of the ball while playing with 10 men for almost the entire match.
- Passing: The Whitecaps completed 468 of 537 passes. LAFC completed 420 of 480.
- Shots on target: LAFC led 12-9 in total shots but only 4-3 on target.
- Crosses: LAFC sent in 26 and found a teammate with eight.
- Clearances: Vancouver cleared the ball 26 times to LAFC's 12.
What It Means
Vancouver move to 15-6-7 with 51 points. The club says that left it four points clear at the top of the West, and MLS confirmed the draw clinched a playoff place. The Whitecaps had lost 3-1 at Chicago four days earlier, so a point on the road with 10 men is a decent way to change the mood. Both meetings with LAFC this season have now finished 1-1.
LAFC sit at 11-9-9 with 42 points and, per the club, remained sixth in the Western Conference with five regular-season matches remaining. That is four straight league games without a win. Both teams play again on Wednesday: LAFC host Austin FC, and Vancouver visit St. Louis CITY SC.
The Closing Take
This was Apollo 13 with cleats. Something broke six minutes into the mission, the crew improvised with whatever was lying around, and they still splashed down with a playoff ticket. LAFC had the spare oxygen all night and never figured out how to use it.
