Sam Surridge Leads Nashville SC Past Chicago Fire 3-0 to Become First Team to Clinch a 2026 Playoff Spot
Sam Surridge, Cristian Espinoza and Hany Mukhtar scored as Nashville SC beat the Chicago Fire 3-0 to become the first team to clinch a 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs spot.

The build-up promised a heavyweight duel between two No. 9s. Sam Surridge turned it into a one-sided highlight package, and Nashville SC turned a Saturday night at GEODIS Park into a playoff party.
Surridge tapped home the opener in the 33rd minute, Cristian Espinoza and Hany Mukhtar added late goals, and Nashville SC beat the Chicago Fire 3-0 to become the first team to clinch a spot in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. Robert Lewandowski spent the night chasing shadows, Brian Schwake kept a clean sheet, and Nashville stayed unbeaten at home this season. For a club that lost the reverse fixture 1-0 in Chicago back in April, it was a very loud receipt.
Pressure, Then a Breakthrough
Nashville came out swinging. Chris Brady had to save a Surridge header in the second minute, and from there the hosts set up camp in Chicago's half. Andy Nájar dragged a tight-angle shot wide in the 16th minute. Surridge sent Espinoza through on a fast break in the 22nd, but Espinoza's left-footed shot slid just past the post. Mukhtar tried his luck twice from distance either side of the half-hour mark.
Per Nashville's site, the hosts had 69 percent of the ball in the first half and eight shots to Chicago's two. The goal had been coming for a while, and when it arrived in the 33rd minute, it was a beauty. Per the club's account, Matthew Corcoran clipped a pass over the top, Reed Baker-Whiting got to it near the touchline and nodded it straight back across the six-yard box, and Surridge had the simplest of finishes from point-blank range. The club said it was his 16th goal of the season and his third in two games.
Mukhtar was booked in the 36th minute, and Lewandowski was flagged offside in the 35th minute. It was 1-0 at halftime and it could have been more.
Chicago Gets a Look, Nashville Gets Two
The second half started the same way, with Mukhtar dragging a shot wide right after the restart. Chicago did have its best spell around the hour. Lewandowski headed a Robin Lod cross just wide on a fast break in the 59th minute, and in the 63rd he and Maren Haile-Selassie had shots blocked in the same sequence. Head coach Gregg Berhalter threw on Jonathan Bamba and Puso Dithejane in the 68th minute to chase an equalizer.
It did not come. Brady made a full-stretch save on a Corcoran drive in the 73rd minute, and five minutes later Nájar cut the ball back for Espinoza, who finished from the center of the box into the bottom left corner for 2-0.
Lewandowski had his best look in the 83rd minute, a shot from the left side of the six-yard box that went just wide. Four minutes later, Nashville put it away. Espinoza turned provider on a fast break and Mukhtar curled a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Ballgame, and playoff berth.
Three Designated Players, Three Goals
MLS noted it was the first time in club history that all three of Nashville's Designated Players scored in the same match. Surridge finished with three shots, two on target, and was a constant nuisance, even if he was caught offside three times. Espinoza had a goal and an assist on two shots, earning a spot on the league's Team of the Matchday. Mukhtar took four shots and scored the clincher.
The quiet stars were at the back and on the left. Baker-Whiting provided the assist on the opener, and Schwake did not have to make a save on ESPN's count as Chicago managed just one shot on target all night. Per Nashville, it was his 12th league clean sheet of the season, coming just before his first-ever call-up to the U.S. Men's National Team.
Lewandowski finished with three shots and nothing on target. Nashville's defenders simply did not give him room.
"It's just happiness because today we achieved one of our goals for this season," Espinoza said. "It's amazing."
The Corcoran Save That Changed Nothing
The turning point was really the 33rd-minute opener, but the moment the game felt over came at 78 minutes. Chicago had just had its best spell, and Brady had kept it 1-0 with a diving stop on Corcoran. Instead of building on that, the Fire conceded five minutes later off a simple cutback. From there, Chicago had to chase, and Nashville is a miserable team to chase against, because the counterattack is always loaded. Mukhtar's goal came exactly that way.
By the Numbers
- Shots on target: Nashville 5, Chicago 1.
- Total shots: Nashville 13, Chicago 9.
- Possession: Nashville 55.7 percent, Chicago 44.3 percent.
- Saves: Brady 3, Schwake 0.
- Tackles: Nashville 19, Chicago 10.
What It Means
Nashville improved to 17-6-3 with 57 points and won for the first time in four league matches, after a 0-0 draw at New York City, a 2-1 loss at Toronto and a 2-2 draw at Inter Miami. MLS reported that the 17 wins are a club record, that Nashville has taken 37 of a possible 39 points at home this season, and that it holds an eight-point lead over Vancouver in the Supporters' Shield race. Nashville hosts Toronto FC on Sept. 26.
"When you set out on a vision and you look at the season, the first milestone is you have to earn your way into the MLS playoffs if you want to reach ultimate goals," head coach B.J. Callaghan said.
Chicago fell to 11-6-8 with 39 points and is winless in six league matches, with four draws and two losses. The club said it remained fifth in the East. The Fire visit Charlotte FC next.
Checking Boxes
Nashville is playing like a band on its farewell tour that keeps adding dates. Clinching a playoff spot in September is the opening act. The Shield, a points record and an MLS Cup are the headliners they actually came for. Mukhtar, the 2022 MVP, put it plainly: "We clinched; that was our first goal of the season and not our last one. Many more to achieve."
