Lionel Messi took 11 shots on Saturday night. He hit the post twice in stoppage time, set up Miami's only goal and saw a first-half penalty fail to go in. Hany Mukhtar took seven shots and scored twice. Guess which one Nashville will be talking about all week.

Mukhtar's second-half brace powered Nashville SC to a 4-1 rout of Inter Miami CF in front of a sellout crowd at GEODIS Park, a matchup Nashville's own headline framed as first against second. Andy Nájar and Sam Surridge also scored, and the Coyotes left no doubt about which of the East's two heavyweights owns the summer.

A Header, a Penalty and an Answer

Nashville came out swinging. Rocco Ríos Novo had to make two saves in the seventh minute alone, stopping Cristian Espinoza from distance and then Reed Baker-Whiting from the right side of the box. He stopped Mukhtar in the 16th too, but a minute later the dam broke. Elias Saad sent in a cross and Nájar, arriving at the right side of the six-yard box, headed it into the top right corner. Per Nashville and the AP, it was his first goal of the season.

Miami had a gift-wrapped route back in the 22nd minute, when Maxwell Woledzi was penalized for a foul on Luis Suárez in the box. Messi stepped up a minute later, and the kick did not go in. ESPN's match data logs it as a miss to the left; both clubs, the league's site and the AP credited Brian Schwake with a save. Either way, it stayed 1-0.

The home side kept piling on. Mukhtar fired over off a corner in the 33rd, three Nashville shots were blocked in a two-minute spell from the 38th, and Mukhtar sent a free kick over in the 41st. Then, in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, Miami punished all that wastefulness. Messi found Telasco Segovia on the left side of the box, and Segovia, who Miami said danced past his defenders, finished into the bottom right corner for his third goal of the regular season. Level at the break, against the run of play.

Fourteen Minutes of Music City Mayhem

The second half started with a warning shot from Messi, whose effort in the 47th minute was saved by Schwake. Two minutes later, Nashville took over for good. Saad found Mukhtar on the left side of the box, and the captain slotted a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

In the 56th minute, Espinoza teed up Surridge for a finish from very close range, confirmed after a VAR review. MLSsoccer.com described it as a heel flick. Seven minutes after that, Nashville turned a goal kick into a goal. ESPN credited Schwake with the assist on a fast break, and the AP reported that Ríos Novo misread the goal kick and fell, letting Mukhtar collect the loose ball and finish through the middle for 4-1.

Miami never stopped swinging. Messi had two shots blocked in the 68th minute and another saved in the 69th, Casemiro headed a De Paul corner off the right post in the 73rd, and Schwake denied Segovia in the 81st. Deep into nine minutes of added time, Messi hit the right post and then the left post a minute apart. It was that kind of night for the visitors: plenty of chances, nothing to show for them.

The Headliners

Hany Mukhtar finished with two goals, seven shots and three on target. Nashville said they were his seventh and eighth MLS goals of the season, and MLSsoccer.com counted six goals in 12 matches against Miami. He was not interested in the hype. "It's not a statement," Mukhtar said, per MLSsoccer.com. "There are too many games left."

Elias Saad set up two goals, the first two MLS assists of his career, per Nashville. The club said he was acquired in July from the German Bundesliga, and he is already making the move look like a heist.

Sam Surridge scored what Nashville counted as his 12th MLS goal of the season, his 14th across all competitions and his 50th career regular season goal.

Brian Schwake made three saves in ESPN's count (Nashville listed four) and added a rare goalkeeper assist.

For Miami, Messi had 11 shots, two on target, an assist and a yellow card in the 59th minute. Segovia was Miami's lone scorer.

The Two Minutes That Flipped It

The turning point came right after halftime. Miami had stolen the momentum with Segovia's stoppage-time equalizer, and Messi had a clean look at goal in the 47th minute. Schwake saved it. Two minutes later, Mukhtar scored at the other end, and Nashville added two more inside 14 minutes. One save, one finish, and the night belonged to the hosts.

The Numbers

  • Possession: Inter Miami 55.2 percent, Nashville 44.8 percent.
  • Shots: Nashville 18, Miami 16. On target: Nashville 8, Miami 4.
  • Messi's shots: 11 of Miami's 16.
  • Woodwork: Miami hit the post three times.
  • Corners: Nashville 10, Miami 4.

What It Means

Nashville improved to 13-4-2 with 43 points, and the club said it remains first in MLS. MLSsoccer.com put Nashville's Supporters' Shield lead at five points over Miami. Per the club, Nashville is the only MLS team without a regular-season home loss in 2026, at 9W-0L-1D at GEODIS Park, and is unbeaten in 12 of its last 13 MLS matches. The AP noted it was only Nashville's second win over Inter Miami since Messi joined the club.

"They're willing to work for each other, work for the team," head coach B.J. Callaghan said.

Nashville visits the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, Aug. 19, part of a run of eight matches in 29 days. Miami fell to 11-5-3 with 38 points, and the loss ended a seven-match MLS unbeaten run that dated to May 9. The Herons visit the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.

Music City Has a New Headliner

Nashville has hosted plenty of famous names on big stages, and Saturday was billed as Messi's show. But the guy in his seventh season in Music City stole the night, with a setlist of two goals and a postgame line that sounded like a band refusing to celebrate a sold-out tour too early. "We have a clear mentality in our team," Mukhtar said. Right now, that mentality is sitting five points clear.
