Some milestones arrive with a tap-in. Marta's came with a curler from outside the box that bent into the bottom right corner, which feels about right for Marta.

Her 49th-minute strike opened the scoring, Hannah Anderson and Barbra Banda added more, and the Orlando Pride beat the Kansas City Current 3-0 on Friday night at Inter&Co Stadium. Per the Pride, the goal was Marta's 50th for the club across all competitions, making her the first player in Orlando history to get there. Anna Moorhouse made nine saves in her own milestone night, and Kansas City saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

A Patient First Half

Seb Hines shook things up after a 2-0 loss at Angel City FC the week before, making four changes and putting Anderson, Marta, Solai Washington and Zara Chavoshi into the starting lineup. The club said it was Chavoshi's first start of the season.

The first half was even, and that is being generous to both attacks. Angelina missed twice in the opening 10 minutes, and Kerry Abello headed wide from the six-yard box in the 11th. Kansas City answered through Haley Hopkins, who just missed the top right corner in the 13th, and Croix Bethune, whose long-range effort Moorhouse saved in the 16th.

The Current had the better of the middle stretch. Moorhouse saved Debinha's effort at the top left corner in the 22nd minute, Hopkins headed wide off a corner in the 25th, and Bethune forced another save with a header in the 30th. Orlando's best chance came in the 38th, when Jacqueline Ovalle tested Marisa Jordan from distance. It was 0-0 at the break.

Kansas City made a big swing at halftime, bringing on Temwa Chawinga for Debinha. Orlando answered four minutes later.

Marta Bends It, Anderson Heads It

In the 49th minute, Ovalle laid the ball off to Marta, and Marta curled a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. The Pride said it was her second goal of the season, and Ovalle's assist was her team-leading third.

The hosts lost Abello to an injury in the 53rd minute, with Hailie Mace taking her place, but the momentum did not stall. In the 57th, Ally Lemos whipped in a corner and Anderson headed it in from point-blank range. Per the club, it was Anderson's second goal of the season and the second of her NWSL career.

Two goals in eight minutes. Kansas City had matched Orlando for 45 minutes and lost the game in less than a quarter of an hour.

The Wall in Purple

This is where the night turned into the Anna Moorhouse show. Kansas City poured forward for the next half hour, and Moorhouse stopped everything on target.

She saved Bethune from a tight angle in the 67th minute. She stopped substitute Bayley Feist from distance in the 72nd and Gianna Paul in the 74th. She got down to a Chawinga shot in the 80th and kept out Bethune again from the center of the box in the 81st.

That was the turning point: not a single moment, but a sustained stretch in which Kansas City threw everything at the goal and none of it went in. Win that battle and a 2-0 lead becomes a 2-0 win.

Then Banda, on for Marta in the 76th minute, made sure there would be no late drama. She broke away in the 85th and finished with her right foot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. The Pride said Jordan had misplayed a clearance outside her area on the play. Per the club, it was Banda's league-leading 12th goal of the season and the first of her career off the bench. Moorhouse still had work to do, saving Izzy Rodriguez's long-range attempt in the 87th.

Who Shone

Anna Moorhouse earned top billing: nine saves, a season high and, per the club, the second-most she has made in an NWSL match. It came in her 100th appearance for the Pride across all competitions, making her the fifth player in club history to reach that mark.

Marta needed one shot to make history. Banda needed two shots to add the exclamation point. Hannah Anderson scored and helped keep a clean sheet.

For Kansas City, Croix Bethune put all four of her shots on target, and Chawinga fired five times off the bench. Neither could solve Moorhouse.

Hines liked what he saw. "Really pleased with the result. I think it was quite even in the first half," he said. "We had some really outstanding performances. I thought it was a really big collective effort from everyone."

The Numbers Behind the Shutout

  • Shots: Kansas City 20, Orlando 11.
  • On goal: Kansas City 9, Orlando 5.
  • Saves: Moorhouse 9, Jordan 2.
  • Possession: Kansas City 55.3 percent, Orlando 44.7.
  • Clearances: Orlando 29, Kansas City 16.

Where Both Clubs Stand

Orlando moves to six wins, two draws and six losses with 20 points. The club said it was Orlando's fifth clean sheet of the season, that the Pride have now scored in seven straight NWSL home matches, and that the result handed Kansas City its first loss in its last five trips to Orlando. The Pride stay home to host Boston Legacy FC on Wednesday, July 15.

Kansas City falls to eight wins and six losses, still with 24 points and no draws on its record. The loss snapped a three-game winning run that included home wins over the Portland Thorns and Boston and a 3-0 result at Denver on July 3. The Current host the San Diego Wave on Friday, July 17.

Final Word

"It was nice to get some goals and a clean sheet at the end of it," Hines said, which is the soccer coach version of saying the cake was pretty good. Marta made history, Moorhouse made nine saves, and Orlando made a statement. Kansas City had the ball. Orlando had the night.
