For 75 minutes on Sunday afternoon at BMO Stadium, nobody could find the net. Then the dam burst. Three goals in the final stretch, two of them in stoppage time, and when the dust settled the Portland Thorns had a 2-1 win over Angel City FC and Sophia Wilson had her first goal of the season.

Pietra Tordin headed Portland in front in the 76th minute, Wilson doubled the lead on a counterattack in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and Prisca Chilufya's volley three minutes later only made the final seconds tense for the 16,636 fans. The Thorns say Wilson's strike was her first league goal since November 2024, and that the result made Portland the first team in NWSL history to reach 50 regular season road wins.

A Goalkeepers' Duel Before the Chaos

Both teams were coming off the international break, and the first half played like it. Angel City was busier early. Evelyn Shores headed narrowly off target in the 12th minute, and Mackenzie Arnold had to work in the 25th and 26th, first batting a Gisele Thompson effort over the bar, per Angel City, and then stopping Maiara Niehues from the middle of the box after the ensuing corner.

Portland had its moments too. Olivia Moultrie broke clear in the 29th minute, but the play was called back for offside. Three minutes later she tried a swerving shot from outside the box, and Angelina Anderson dove to keep it out. Taylor Suarez, making her first professional start according to Angel City, forced Arnold into another save in the 36th, and the teams went to the break level at 0-0. It was a cagey half between two coaches with European pedigree: Angel City says its head coach, Alex Straus, won multiple Frauen-Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, while Portland head coach Robert Vilahamn led Tottenham Hotspur Women from 2023 to 2025.

Pressure Builds

The second half opened with Angel City pushing. Kennedy Fuller fired wide in the 47th minute, Shores headed a corner wide a minute later, and Arnold saved from Sveindís Jónsdóttir in the 53rd and Riley Tiernan in the 60th. Thompson was the engine behind much of it, setting up four Angel City attempts on the day.

Vilahamn sent on Mimi Alidou for Reilyn Turner in the 60th minute, and the change gave the Thorns a jolt. Alidou forced Anderson into saves in the 61st and 70th minutes. Angel City answered with its own changes, bringing on Ary Borges and Jun Endo, who made her first appearance of the season. Arnold then stopped Niehues again in the 72nd.

The Turning Point

The break came from a sequence in the 75th and 76th minutes. Wilson got a shot away from the right side of the six-yard box, Anderson saved it, and Portland won a corner. From that corner, Carolyn Calzada nodded the ball toward the six-yard box and Tordin headed it in from close range, into the bottom left corner. After 75 minutes of near misses, one set piece flipped the afternoon.

Renee Lyles replaced Tordin in the 79th minute to make her NWSL debut, per the Thorns. Angel City pushed hard for an equalizer. Chilufya came on in the 84th minute, Endo had a shot blocked in the 86th, and Jónsdóttir fired over in the 90th. Then the counterpunch landed. Off an Angel City free kick attempt, Portland broke the other way, Alidou played a long pass to Wilson, and she carried it into the box before finishing left-footed into the bottom right corner.

Chilufya made it interesting in the eighth minute of stoppage time, hammering a one-timed volley at the right post off an Emily Sams cross. Portland ran out the clock from there.

Star Turns

Sophia Wilson finished with a goal and three of her four shots on target. She was involved in both goals, too, since her saved effort produced the corner for the opener.

Pietra Tordin scored for the third time this season. The Thorns say she is now Portland's leading goal contributor with three goals and two assists, and she shares the team scoring lead with Moultrie and Turner.

Carolyn Calzada went the full 90 minutes and picked up her first career assist in her professional debut, per the club. Mimi Alidou recorded her first assist of the season and put both of her shots on target off the bench. Mackenzie Arnold made six saves.

For Angel City, Angelina Anderson made five saves, Maiara Niehues put both of her shots on target, and Prisca Chilufya scored with her only shot after coming off the bench.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Angel City 15, Portland 10. On target: 7 apiece.
  • Saves: Arnold 6, Anderson 5.
  • Possession: Angel City 55.2 percent, Portland 44.8.
  • Clearances: Portland 42, Angel City 12. The Thorns spent a lot of the afternoon defending.
  • Crosses: Angel City attempted 20 and completed 4.

What It Means

Portland moves to four wins, one draw and one loss with 13 points and is unbeaten in three. It was the Thorns' first road win since the season opener, a 1-0 win at the Washington Spirit on March 13. Portland hosts San Diego Wave FC at Providence Park on Wednesday, April 29.

Angel City drops to three wins, no draws and two losses with 9 points. After opening with three straight wins, Angel City has now lost two in a row, following a 2-1 defeat at the Orlando Pride on April 3, and this was its first home loss of the season. Angel City hosts the Utah Royals on Saturday, May 2.

The Final Word

Straus knew exactly where the points went. "We need to come out of these games winning," he said. "But the mistakes were too big, and we need to minimize those areas." Chilufya saw a different second half than the scoreboard did. "Coming in the second half, we were the better team," she said. Maybe so. But Portland played the closing scene like a thriller that saves its twist for the final minutes, and Wilson got to deliver the line everyone remembers.
