Pietra Tordin Hat Trick Powers Portland Thorns Past Boston Legacy in 4-3 Thriller

Pietra Tordin scored her first career hat trick and Portland Thorns FC built a 4-1 lead, then held off a Boston Legacy FC comeback to win 4-3 in Pawtucket.

Ten minutes in, the scoreboard at Centreville Bank Stadium read like a typo. Portland 3, Boston 0, and Pietra Tordin already had two of them.

By the final whistle Portland Thorns FC had beaten Boston Legacy FC 4-3, and the Thorns needed every one of Tordin's goals. The forward scored her first career hat trick on Sunday afternoon in Pawtucket, R.I., and Portland held off a stubborn Boston rally to snap a four-match winless run.

Three Goals Before the Crowd Got Comfortable

Tordin wasted no time. She drew a foul from Jorelyn Carabalí just outside the box in the opening minute, then stepped up herself and struck a right-footed free kick into the top left corner in the second. The Thorns said it was the fastest goal of her career.

Four minutes later it was 2-0. Marie Müller, a defender by trade who was playing on the right wing, won a scramble in Boston's end and fed Sophia Wilson, who finished from the middle of the box. In the 10th minute Jessie Fleming slid a pass toward Wilson, Wilson let it run, according to the Thorns, and Tordin swept it into the bottom right corner. Ten minutes, three goals, and a home crowd of 10,223 wondering what had just happened.

Boston Refused to Fold

To the Legacy's credit, they did not spend the rest of the afternoon staring at the scoreboard. In the 31st minute Sammy Smith threaded a ball across the face of goal and center back Bianca St-Georges finished from the right side of the six-yard box to make it 3-1.

Portland nearly answered immediately. Casey Murphy saved from Wilson in the 33rd, and Müller hit the bar in the same minute. Four minutes later, the Thorns found the dagger from the most unlikely source. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold launched a long ball over the top, Tordin ran onto it, and her right-footed finish from outside the box looped into the top left corner. Hat trick, and 4-1.

Boston still was not done. Alba Caño hit a low strike from distance into the bottom left corner in the 42nd minute off a Barbara Olivieri setup, and the teams went into halftime at 4-2 after Murphy denied Müller and Wilson flashed one just wide in added time.

A Second Half Built on Nerves

The Legacy came out of the break with Nicki Hernández and Amanda Gutierres on for Emerson Elgin and Smith, and the game flipped into a siege. Arnold saved from Amanda Allen in the 53rd, Caño fired wide in the 55th and had another attempt blocked a minute later. The temperature rose on Portland's bench too. The Thorns' report lists a 58th-minute red card for Robert Vilahamn, and Boston's notes that the Portland red was issued to a coach.

Arnold kept the gap at two with back-to-back saves in the 71st minute, first from Aïssata Traoré and then from Josefine Hasbo. Then Boston's bench delivered. Aleigh Gambone, on in the 78th, drove to the end line and cut it back, and Gutierres buried it first time from the middle of the box in the 82nd. Boston said it was Gutierres' fifth goal of the season and the club's fifth by a substitute.

That set up a tense finish. Portland collected yellow cards from Jayden Perry, Morgan Weaver and, deep into seven minutes of stoppage time, Arnold herself. Traoré had a shot from distance blocked in the 94th minute. The equalizer never came.

Tordin Writes Her Name in the Record Book

The Thorns' notes on Tordin read like a highlight package. First career hat trick. Youngest Thorn ever to score one. First Portland hat trick since Wilson did it on June 23, 2023, against Washington. Per the club, she now leads the NWSL in goal contributions with 15 and shares the league lead in assists with eight, while her seven goals rank second on the team.

She got there efficiently, too: five shots, three on target, three goals. Every shot she put on frame ended up in the net.

Wilson did plenty of the dirty work alongside her, putting three of her four shots on target and scoring her ninth goal of the year, which keeps her atop Portland's scoring chart. Müller had an assist and the woodwork, and Fleming chipped in an assist as well.

Then there is Arnold. Three saves, a yellow card and an assist. The Thorns say she is the first goalkeeper in club history to record an assist and only the fifth in league history. Goalkeepers are not supposed to have stat lines this chaotic.

For Boston, Caño was the most dangerous outfield player with three shots and a goal, while Olivieri created one and was whistled for five fouls. St-Georges, a center back, chipped in a goal for good measure.

The Turning Point

St-Georges' goal had given Boston real belief, and the Legacy were pushing when Arnold picked out Tordin in the 37th minute. That goal restored Portland's three-goal cushion just six minutes after Boston had cut into it, and in a match decided by one goal, it turned out to be the winner. Without it, Gutierres' 82nd-minute strike is an equalizer, not a consolation.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Boston 60.3 percent, Portland 39.7.
  • Shots on target: Portland 7, Boston 6, with 3 saves for each goalkeeper.
  • Clearances: Portland 43, Boston 10.
  • Passing: Boston completed 367 of 456 passes, Portland 231 of 304.
  • Discipline: Portland 5 yellow cards, Boston 1.

What It Means

Portland moves to 9-4-6 with 31 points. The Thorns had gone four straight matches without a win, a skid that included last week's 5-1 loss at Utah, and this was their first road win since May 3. The four first-half goals tied a club record, according to Portland, and the Thorns say they now share the league lead in goals scored with 32. Portland hosts the Orlando Pride on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Boston, in its inaugural season, falls to 5-5-9 with 20 points. The Legacy had won three of their previous five, and they can point to second-half control and a late push. Still, conceding three times in 10 minutes is a hole few teams climb out of. Boston said the seven goals tied the season's highest-scoring match in the league. The Legacy visit Racing Louisville FC on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Closing Take

This one had a sitcom structure: a cold open where everything goes right for Portland, a messy middle and a finale where nobody is sure the plot holds. It held, barely. And when people look back on Tordin's season, the free kick, the cool finish and the lob off a goalkeeper's long ball will be the trilogy they remember.
