The Portland Thorns needed one thing on Friday night: a win, any win, to punch their ticket to the postseason. They got it the hard way, with 37.3 percent of the ball, a goal that came out of a scramble and a defensive shift that ended with 37 clearances.

Marie Müller's 60th-minute strike from outside the box gave Portland a 1-0 win over the North Carolina Courage at Providence Park, clinching a playoff berth in front of 20,105 fans. Mackenzie Arnold made two saves for the clean sheet, and the Courage left Oregon with nothing to show for 62.7 percent possession and eight corners.

Turner Tests, Sanchez Threatens

Portland came out like a team that knew what was at stake. Isabella Obaze headed a Müller cross at Kailen Sheridan in the third minute, and Reilyn Turner forced another save a minute later. Turner was the Thorns' most persistent problem for the Courage all night: five shots, three on target and six fouls drawn, the most of anyone on the field.

North Carolina had its own scare for the home crowd. Ashley Sanchez chipped the ball into the net in the sixth minute, but she was flagged offside. She kept coming, forcing Arnold into a save from a tight angle in the 19th minute. Müller was booked in the 27th, and just before the break the Courage nearly broke through when Ryan Williams smashed a shot from distance off the crossbar after a corner. Portland went to halftime level and maybe a little relieved.

Müller Unloads

The second half turned into a grind of fouls and stoppages. Bia Gomes, who committed five fouls, was booked in the 55th minute. Then, in the 60th, Portland finally broke loose. Turner's shot on a fast break was blocked, the ball fell to Müller about 20 yards out, and she launched a right-footed strike into the top right corner. Sheridan had no chance.

Per the Thorns, it was Müller's third goal of the season and her second game-winner. For a player who started the night by setting up the first chance and picking up an early yellow, it was a tidy redemption arc.

The Courage Push

North Carolina responded the way a team fighting for its season should. Substitute Gianna Paul came on for Gomes a minute after the goal and immediately started feeding crosses. Arnold saved Sanchez's shot toward the top left corner in the 62nd minute, Sanchez headed over from a corner five minutes later, and then came a remarkable two-minute stretch in which four Courage shots were blocked: Evelyn Ijeh in the 70th, Sanchez and Riley Jackson in the 71st, and Sanchez again in the 72nd.

That sequence summed up the Thorns' night. Portland did not always have the ball, but it always seemed to have a body in the way. The Thorns finished with 37 clearances to the Courage's 15, and Arnold, whom the club credits with her eighth clean sheet of the season, was rarely left exposed.

The final 15 minutes became a war of attrition. Ally Schlegel replaced Ijeh in the 76th minute, Jackson was booked in the 79th, and the Courage sent on Vilde Bøe Risa and Hannah Betfort in the 85th. Portland nearly added a second in the 86th, when Reyna Reyes was blocked and Caiya Hanks fired over after a corner. Betfort then teed up Sanchez for one last good look in the 88th, but her shot from outside the box drifted wide.

Star Turns

Sanchez was the Courage's engine, firing seven shots, but only two were on target and Arnold saved both. Sheridan was terrific at the other end with five saves, including a late stop on Pietra Tordin's long-range shot in stoppage time, and she deserved better than a loss.

For Portland, Müller provided the moment, Turner provided the chaos and Arnold provided the calm. Nina Nijstad deserves a mention too: she set up the Turner shot that led to the goal and was in the middle of the defensive scraps all night, even if she committed six fouls in the process.

The Turning Point

The 60th minute settled it, but the moment before it mattered just as much. North Carolina had spent the previous 15 minutes probing with corners and set pieces. One blocked Turner shot and one loose ball later, the Courage were chasing, and chasing is not where you want to be against a team that clears everything in sight.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: North Carolina 62.7 percent, Portland 37.3.
  • Shots on goal: Portland 7, North Carolina 2.
  • Saves: Sheridan 5, Arnold 2.
  • Clearances: Portland 37, North Carolina 15.
  • Corners: North Carolina 8, Portland 5.

What It Means

Portland improves to 13-8-8 with 47 points and is officially in. The Thorns say they have extended their league-leading playoff streak to 10 consecutive seasons. The club also notes that Portland has scored in 13 straight matches, a single-season club record, that its 10th clean sheet of the year makes this only the third Thorns season with 10 or more, and that Portland is the first team in NWSL history to record 100 clean sheets. The win also snapped a four-match home winless streak. Portland's result had a ripple effect, too: the Utah Royals, who drew Seattle the same night, clinched their first NWSL playoff spot once the Thorns won, per the Royals.

The Thorns close at the Houston Dash on Nov. 1, Decision Day.

North Carolina drops to 13-3-13 with 42 points and has now lost five of its last six matches. The Courage and Thorns drew 2-2 in Cary in April. The Courage enter the final day two points behind Seattle, which sits eighth on 44, and they host Denver Summit FC on Nov. 1 with the Summit's playoff hopes riding on the result.

Closing Take

This was not a masterpiece. It was more garage band than symphony: loud, messy and effective. Ugly wins count the same as pretty ones, and this one bought Portland a 10th straight trip to the postseason.
