Some players celebrate a milestone with a cake. Sophia Wilson celebrated her 100th regular-season appearance by personally dismantling the Orlando Pride.

Wilson scored once, set up two more and fired nine shots as the Portland Thorns rolled to a 4-1 win at Inter&Co Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Nina Nijstad, Morgan Weaver and Renee Lyles also scored for Portland, Ally Lemos answered for Orlando, and the Thorns snapped a three-match winless run in emphatic fashion.

Three Minutes to Lift-Off

Portland did not bother with a feeling-out period. In the third minute, Wilson carried the ball into the box and laid it back for Nijstad, who struck a right-footed shot into the top right corner. According to the Thorns, it was Nijstad's first NWSL goal.

What followed was a one-woman shooting gallery. In the 17th and 18th minutes, Wilson forced Cosette Morché into three saves from the middle of the box, with Pietra Tordin adding a fourth attempt in between. Morché stopped all of it, which only delayed the inevitable. In the 27th minute, Caiya Hanks drew a foul from Oihane Hernández in the box, and a minute later Wilson buried the penalty in the top right corner. The Thorns said it was her 11th career penalty goal, making her the club's all-time leader in that category, and that she remains perfect from the spot in her NWSL career.

Orlando answered almost immediately. Two minutes after the penalty, Solai Washington cut the ball back for Lemos, who curled a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner. The Pride said it was her first career NWSL goal.

Orlando Pushes, Portland Waits

The goal woke the hosts up. Summer Yates headed a Haley McCutcheon cross just wide in the 32nd minute, and then Mackenzie Arnold had to work. She saved from Yates in the 35th, McCutcheon in the 37th and a McCutcheon header in the 42nd. Portland went into the break up 2-1, but it had been made to sweat.

The second half belonged to Orlando's possession and Portland's patience. The Pride piled up corners, took shots through Washington, Barbra Banda and Jacqueline Ovalle, and forced Arnold into another save on a Hannah Anderson header in the 69th minute. Nothing went in. Interim head coach Yolanda Thomas said afterward that her side took risks to chase a win, and Portland was waiting to make it pay.

The Turning Point

The 74th minute. Thorns substitute Cassandra Bogere, on for only three minutes, found Weaver in Orlando's half, and Weaver hit a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner to make it 3-1. Portland said it was her first goal since Nov. 1, 2024, and her 20th career regular-season goal. Bogere picked up her first NWSL assist.

That goal ended the contest. Wilson nearly added another in the 80th minute when her shot hit the left post, and in the 88th she threaded a through ball to Lyles, who finished into the center of the goal for 4-1. It was Lyles' second goal of the season, per the club. Morché kept the scoreline from getting uglier with stops on Weaver in the 90th minute and Wilson and Reyna Reyes in stoppage time.

Wilson, in Full

Wilson's stat line from her milestone match: nine shots, five on target, one goal, two assists, one post. The Thorns said she is now the sixth player in club history to make 100 regular-season appearances and the fourth to score in her 100th match. Her 13 goals lead the team, one shy of the club record of 14 she set in 2022, and her 18 assists are now third-most in Thorns history.

Weaver made the most of her time off the bench with two shots, both on target, and a goal. Arnold made five saves, and Reyes earned praise from the club for an early block that kept Orlando from equalizing right after the opener.

For Orlando, Morché was the only reason this was not a bigger rout, finishing with nine saves. McCutcheon, making her 100th regular-season appearance for the Pride, put two of her four shots on target. Marta came off the bench for her 150th regular-season appearance with Orlando, a club record.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Portland 13, Orlando 6, even though Orlando outshot Portland 19 to 17.
  • Saves: Morché 9, Arnold 5.
  • Possession: Orlando 53 percent, Portland 47 percent.
  • Corners: Orlando 8, Portland 4.
  • Crosses: Orlando completed 7 of 20; Portland barely bothered, going 1 for 7.

What It Means

Portland improved to 12-6-7 with 42 points. According to the Thorns, it was the club's first 12-win season since 2021, its first win in Orlando since 2022, and the first time since 2022 that it beat the Pride twice in one season, after a 2-1 home win in August. The club also said the Thorns are unbeaten in their last three road matches. Portland hosts the Houston Dash next on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Orlando fell to 9-3-13 with 30 points, ending a two-match unbeaten stretch that included a 3-1 win over Houston and a 2-2 draw at Kansas City. The Pride head west to face Bay FC on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Thomas did not dress it up. "It's just a tough result," she said. "Obviously, that didn't work out for us, but I think probably the biggest disappointment is we have momentum, and we don't take advantage of those times in the game, and then it punishes us."

Closing Take

Washington put it simply: "Some of the things are avoidable mistakes that we made and we can grow from." Fair enough, but the bigger problem was the player wearing Portland's No. 9. Milestone nights are usually about the ceremony. Wilson skipped the speeches and went straight to the highlight reel, and by the time Lyles made it 4-1, the only suspense left was how many ice baths Morché would need.
