Emma Sears' Brace Sends Racing Louisville Past Reign for Club-Record Fourth Straight Regular-Season Win
Emma Sears scored twice off Lauren Milliet assists as Racing Louisville came from behind to beat Seattle Reign FC 2-1 for a club-record fourth straight regular-season win.

Seattle had the ball, the corners and the shot count. Racing Louisville had Emma Sears, and right now that is the better deal.
Sears scored twice, both times off a Lauren Milliet assist, as Racing Louisville came from behind to beat Seattle Reign FC 2-1 on Wednesday night at Lynn Family Stadium. Maddie Mercado had given the Reign a 19th-minute lead, but Sears equalized in the 35th and won it in the 52nd. Per Racing, the result stretched the club's winning streak to a club-record four games and was Louisville's first-ever regular-season win over Seattle.
Seattle Owns the Ball, Mercado Owns the Moment
For the opening half hour this looked like a Seattle clinic. Mia Fishel had three attempts in the third minute alone, a header and two blocked shots, and Jordyn Bugg headed wide off a corner in the eighth. The Reign pinned Louisville deep and kept circling. In the 18th minute, Nerilia Mondesir volleyed straight at Jordyn Bloomer, and a minute later the pressure finally paid. Mercado pounced on a deflection at the top of the area, settled it and buried a left-footer high into the top right corner. The Reign said it was her seventh goal of the season and her fifth in seven matches.
Louisville, meanwhile, was barely touching the ball. The hosts finished with 34.1 percent possession, and their first real attempt was a Taylor Flint shot from distance in the 25th minute that sailed high and wide. Seattle's only real blemish in that spell was a 33rd-minute yellow card for Angharad James-Turner, the lone booking of the night.
Sears and Milliet Flip the Script
Then, out of almost nothing, Louisville struck. In the 35th minute, Milliet got on the end of a ball over the top and cushioned it into Sears' stride, and Sears finished right-footed into the bottom right corner. The Reign called it a goal against the run of play, which is fair, and also exactly the kind of goal a team on a heater scores.
Seattle came out for the second half pushing again, with Fishel blocked and Mondesir heading narrowly wide in the 47th. Five minutes later, Seattle coughed up possession, Milliet picked out Sears in the middle of the box, and Sears drove her finish straight down the middle. Two shots, two goals. Clinical does not quite cover it.
The final 40 minutes were a siege. Bloomer saved from Fishel and Holly Ward in quick succession in the 57th minute, Mercado had a point-blank effort blocked in the 61st, and substitute Sally Menti forced a save with a header in the 68th. Off a 76th-minute corner, Ainsley McCammon and Emeri Adames both fired wide from the middle of the box, and Brittany Ratcliffe had two shots blocked in the 86th. Louisville cleared everything, 45 times in all. Claudia Dickey had to stop a Katie O'Kane strike in the 69th at the other end, but that was one of the few moments the hosts could breathe.
The Sears and Milliet Show
Sears put both of her shots on target and both went in. Per Racing, it was her second brace in three games. Milliet, the architect, finished with two assists and, according to the club, became the first player in Racing history to reach double digits in career assists. Their connection is the engine of this streak.
"There's a lot of belief with this group," Milliet said. "I think we've just kind of been snowballing, and for us, it's just game by game, brick by brick. We've been laying our bricks really well."
Bloomer deserves a share of the credit. She made four saves, and the Reign noted that none of their 13 second-half shots got past her. Flint, back in the starting lineup, said the group reset quickly after falling behind. "I think it's really powerful after we get scored on to come together and kind of regroup," she said.
For Seattle, Fishel led all players with six shots but put just one on target.
The Turning Point
Sears' equalizer in the 35th minute. Seattle had dominated every phase to that point and looked one goal away from turning the night into a cruise. Instead, Louisville scored on what was effectively its first real chance, and the home crowd, and the home team, came alive. Without that goal, the second half looks completely different.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Seattle 22, Louisville 8. The Reign said it was their second-highest total of the season.
- Corners: Seattle 12, Louisville 0.
- Possession: Seattle 65.9 percent.
- Saves: Bloomer 4, Dickey 1.
- Clearances: Louisville 45, Seattle 9.
What It Means
Louisville improves to 7-2-11 with 23 points. The streak now covers wins over Chicago, Orlando, Boston and Seattle, and Racing has five wins in its last six matches. The club said the hosts scored 11 goals across the four-game run, climbed to 12th and now sit four points off a playoff spot. It also ended a four-match losing run against the Reign that the club says dates to August 2024, including a 2-1 defeat in Seattle in March.
Head coach Bev Yanez was not hiding her pride. "I can't be more proud of the group and the form that they're currently in," she said, before adding: "I did think we started a bit slow, which I think that's fair to say, but the reaction of the group is unbelievable."
Seattle falls to 8-3-8 with 27 points. The loss snapped a four-match unbeaten run that included wins at San Diego and Bay FC, a draw with Angel City and a 1-0 home win over Chicago, and the Reign now face a quick turnaround with a trip to Kansas City on Saturday. Louisville, eyeing a fifth straight win, visits Chicago on Sunday.
Closing Take
There is a Moneyball lesson buried in this one: possession and shot volume are nice, but the scoreboard only counts the ones that go in. Seattle played the prettier soccer. Louisville played the more efficient soccer, and right now Sears and Milliet are running the most dangerous two-player game in the building. If this streak keeps rolling, the playoff race is about to get a lot more crowded.
