Maddie Mercado Brace Powers Seattle Reign Past Chicago Stars, Back Above the Playoff Line
Maddie Mercado scored twice and Nerilia Mondesir struck off the bench as Seattle Reign FC beat the Chicago Stars 3-1 in Evanston to climb back above the playoff line.

Maddie Mercado had already done the hard part. Then, with six minutes left in Evanston, substitute Brittany Ratcliffe whipped a ball into the middle, Mercado rose and headed it into the bottom left corner, and a tense road trip became a victory lap.
That header sealed a 3-1 win for Seattle Reign FC over the Chicago Stars on Sunday evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. Mercado scored twice, Nerilia Mondesir came off the bench to score the other, and the Reign left Illinois with three points that, per the club, put them back above the playoff line in eighth place with 43 points.
Thirty-Eight Minutes of Knocking
For most of the first half, this had the feel of one of those nights where the better team does everything except score. Seattle had the ball, moved it side to side and kept Chicago camped in its own half. Jess Fishlock thought she had broken through early, finishing inside the box, but the flag went up for offside and the scoreboard stayed blank.
The pressure kept building. Mercado dragged an attempt wide from the middle of the box in the 33rd minute, and moments later Fishlock's header was pushed away by Halle Mackiewicz, who was making her first NWSL start of the season, according to the Stars. Fishlock and Mia Fishel each had headers blocked in the 37th minute. One minute later, the wall finally cracked.
The opener was a lovely piece of geometry. Ainsley McCammon switched play with a long ball to Fishlock on the left, the Welsh midfielder centered it, and Mercado took it down on her chest before sliding a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Seattle went into the break up 1-0, and Chicago had not put a single shot on target.
Chicago Hangs Around, Then the Bench Arrives
The Stars came out of halftime with more bite. Brianna Pinto, who took three shots on the night, tested the Reign from distance in the 49th minute, and Nádia Gomes tried her luck on a break two minutes later. Neither found the frame, but it was enough to make a one-goal lead feel fragile. Mercado nearly doubled it in the 48th minute with a shot from outside the box that Mackiewicz saved, and Sam Meza fired two efforts from range just before the hour.
Then Seattle went to its bench, and the game flipped. Ratcliffe replaced Holly Ward in the 65th minute. Mondesir and Madison Curry came on in the 74th. Six minutes later, after Sofia Huerta's set-piece cross was worked back into the danger zone, Mondesir took a touch at the edge of the six-yard box and swept a right-footed finish into the bottom left corner. The club noted it took her less than six minutes to score after entering, and it was her second goal of the season.
Mercado's header four minutes later ended any doubt. Chicago did get a consolation in the 90th minute, when Maitane López slid a through ball to Simone Charley, who outran her marker and lifted a left-footed shot into the top left corner past Claudia Dickey. According to the Stars, it was Charley's first goal in a Stars jersey. It was also Chicago's only shot on target all night.
Mercado Joins the Double-Digit Club
Mercado's line tells the story: four shots, three on target, two goals. They were her ninth and tenth of the season, extending her lead as the Reign's top scorer, and the NWSL counted her among three players who joined the league's double-digit club over the weekend. ESPN lists her as a central midfielder, which makes the total even sillier. A midfielder in double digits is the soccer version of a point guard leading the league in rebounds.
Fishlock was the conductor. She set up the opener, forced a save with her head and kept the ball moving in the final third. Huerta's assist on the second goal came from the left back spot, and Ratcliffe needed only 19 minutes to grab an assist of her own.
For Chicago, there were small consolations. Sam Staab made her 27th start of 2026, which the Stars say broke the club record for starts in one season, and Mallory Swanson's 78th appearance moved her into 10th place on the club's all-time list. Mackiewicz made two saves and was rarely to blame.
The Turning Point: Seattle's Second Wave
The 74th-minute double change was the hinge. Before it, Seattle had piled up chances without a cushion, and Chicago was one bounce away from stealing a point. After it, the Reign scored twice in four minutes. Ratcliffe, Mondesir and Curry gave Seattle fresh legs against a back line that had been chasing for over an hour, and the second goal came straight from that pressure: Ratcliffe won the free kick on the right wing that started the sequence. This is what depth looks like in late October.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Seattle 60.4 percent, Chicago 39.6 percent.
- Shots: Seattle 18, Chicago 7. On target: 5 to 1.
- Passing: The Reign completed 446 of 518 passes; the Stars completed 260 of 338.
- Offsides: Seattle was flagged five times, a sign of how often it was running in behind.
- Saves: Mackiewicz made two. Dickey did not have to make one.
What It Means
Seattle improved to 13-4-11 (wins, draws, losses) with 43 points, and the timing could not have been better. The Reign had dropped a 1-0 home decision to the North Carolina Courage in their previous match, and the club's own recap framed this one as crucial. It also completed a season sweep of Chicago after a 1-0 home win in August. Next up is a trip to the Utah Royals, who sat sixth with 46 points according to the Reign, so the race above the line stays tight with two regular-season matches left.
Chicago fell to 5-2-21 with 17 points, the fewest in the league. It was the Stars' fourth straight loss, and they have not won since beating Racing Louisville 3-2 on Aug. 23. Their home finale against the Houston Dash is up next.
Closing Take
Playoff races are rarely decided by style points, and Seattle did not need any here. It needed a goal before halftime, a bench that could change the temperature of the game and a midfielder who keeps showing up in the box like she has a reservation there. Mercado delivered the first and last of those. If the Reign hang on to eighth, Sunday in Evanston will be the night they remember.
