Tierna Davidson had not scored a regular-season NWSL goal in 2,459 days, according to Gotham FC. When one finally came, she barely knew what to do with it. Davidson redirected a swerving Sofia Cook shot into the top left corner in the 57th minute, then joked afterward that she has "no idea how to celebrate a goal."

She can practice. Davidson's goal doubled Jaedyn Shaw's first-half opener, and Gotham beat the Seattle Reign 2-0 on a rainy Friday night at Lumen Field. The shutout was Gotham's seventh in 10 matches, and the club said it is the first team in league history to blank seven of its first 10 opponents in a season.

Gotham Sets the Tempo

Seattle's own recap called it a chess match from the opening whistle, and Gotham spent the early stretch moving the pieces. The visitors held the ball for most of the first 15 minutes, and Shaw fired a warning shot wide in the sixth.

Seattle's first real threat came in the 14th minute, when Nérilia Mondésir pounced on a Gotham error and sent a shot from distance that Ann-Katrin Berger handled comfortably. The match grew more physical after that, and Shaw was booked in the 22nd minute.

Two minutes later she made up for it. Jordynn Dudley dribbled into the box and slid a low ball across, Savannah McCaskill's one-time effort did not come off cleanly, and Shaw turned and finished with her right foot into the bottom right corner. ESPN credited McCaskill with the assist.

Gotham nearly doubled the lead in the 27th minute, when Claudia Dickey saved Dudley's shot at the bottom left corner. Sofia Huerta answered with a shot just wide for Seattle in the 32nd, and Shaw headed wide from outside the box in the 40th. Gotham went in up 1-0, comfortable but not finished.

The Turning Point: A Corner and a Captain

Both teams made a change at halftime, with Emily Sonnett replacing Jess Carter for Gotham and Maddie Mercado coming on for Emeri Adames for Seattle. The Reign had their best spell early in the second half. Seattle's recap pointed to a sequence in the 55th minute when center back Phoebe McClernon won the ball high and set up Mondésir, whose shot sailed over.

Two minutes later, Gotham took the air out of the building. Off a corner, the ball bounced around the box before Cook struck it from the edge of the area, and Davidson, the club captain, stuck out a foot and redirected it into the top left corner. It was the kind of goal that looks simple on replay and is anything but at full speed.

"The girls around me celebrated a bit more than me, but it was a bit of a shock that it came to me and I was just able to redirect it," Davidson said. "In those situations, the less time you have to think about it, sometimes the better it goes because you're not taking a full swing."

At 2-0, Gotham never looked in danger. Midge Purce hit the left post off a Shaw delivery in the 69th minute, and Davidson and McCaskill had shots blocked in the scramble that followed. Seattle's late push produced a Brittany Ratcliffe shot that Berger saved in the 85th minute and an Emily Mason header that missed to the left a minute later.

"It's a really positive performance and result for the team," acting head coach Shaun Harris said. "Obviously getting that (Shaw) goal early in the first half really, really settled us down, and we were able to set the tone a little bit more. I thought we controlled the game really well."

Star Turns

Jaedyn Shaw: Five shots, one goal and a hand in the Purce chance off the post. Gotham said she has now scored in three straight matches and has a goal or assist in four straight, a career-best run. It was her fourth goal of the season.

Tierna Davidson: A goal from center back and a clean sheet. Gotham said it was her second career regular-season goal and her first since Aug. 22, 2019, when she scored for Chicago against Orlando. It was also her first regular-season goal in a Gotham shirt.

Savannah McCaskill: The assist on Shaw's goal was her sixth regular-season assist for Gotham and the 15th of her career, per the club.

Ann-Katrin Berger: Two saves and her seventh shutout of the season. Gotham said it was her 25th career regular-season shutout, making her the 11th goalkeeper in league history to reach that number.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Gotham 57.3 percent, with 445 accurate passes to Seattle's 297.
  • Shots: Gotham 13, Seattle nine. On target: three to two.
  • Crosses: Seattle tried 21 crosses to Gotham's 14 and could not turn any of them into a goal.
  • Woodwork: Purce's shot off the post was the closest anyone came to another goal.

What It Means

Gotham improves to 5-3-2 with 18 points and is unbeaten in five, with four wins in that stretch. The club said the result pulled it level on points with Washington, tied for third in the table. After starting 1-2-2 with two goals, Gotham has scored nine and conceded one since, per the club, and it is now unbeaten in seven straight against Seattle across all competitions.

The Reign fall to 3-2-4 with 11 points and have lost two straight. More worrying, Seattle has now gone five consecutive matches without scoring, a drought that dates back to a 2-1 win over Racing Louisville in late March. There were bright spots: Seattle said McClernon reached 100 NWSL regular-season appearances and Huerta made her 100th regular-season appearance for the Reign, while defender Jordyn Bugg made her 2026 debut off the bench.

Gotham now pauses league play for the Concacaf W Champions Cup semifinals, where it faces Club América in Mexico. Seattle hits the road for matches at Boston Legacy FC and the Washington Spirit, and the Reign said this was their final match at Lumen Field until July 12.

Final Whistle

Gotham's defense is starting to feel like the velvet rope outside an exclusive club: you can look as good as you want, you are still not getting in. Seven shutouts in 10 matches is a historic pace, and on Friday the captain even chipped in at the other end.
