Maddie Dahlien and Jane Campbell spent Sunday evening at Lumen Field locked in a duel that felt like a best-of-five series. Dahlien put four shots on target. Campbell stopped three of them. The one she could not stop, a 52nd-minute volley from a tight angle, was the only one that mattered.

Seattle Reign FC beat the Houston Dash 1-0 in front of 7,878 fans, outshooting the visitors 17 to 4 and holding them to a single shot on target all night. It was the Reign's first win since a 1-0 home victory over the Chicago Stars on Aug. 14, and it came against a Dash side that had started the day two points behind them.

Seattle Turns Up the Pressure

The Dash came out pressing high, per the Reign, but it was Seattle that did the shooting. Ainsley McCammon tried her luck from distance in the fourth and eighth minutes, Sally Menti clipped a direct free kick just over in the sixth, and Jordyn Bugg glanced a header wide off a Ryanne Brown set piece in the 11th, the same minute Kiki Van Zanten was booked for Houston. Brown and Mia Fishel both went close before Campbell made her first save in the 22nd minute, getting down to a Dahlien shot from the left side of the box.

Houston did not register a shot until Kat Rader dragged one wide in the 29th minute. Later in the half, the Reign felt Dahlien had been brought down in the box by Linda Ullmark, but the referee waved play on. Kate Faasse lifted Houston's only other first-half chance over the bar in stoppage time, and somehow it was 0-0 at the break.

The Volley

Houston's best moment arrived in the 50th minute, when Rader forced Claudia Dickey into a low save off a Faasse pass. It turned out to be the Dash's only shot on target of the match. A minute later Campbell saved a Bugg drive from outside the box, and in the 52nd the dam finally broke.

Maddie Mercado swung a cross toward the back post. The Reign said Campbell could not punch it clear, and the ball dropped for Dahlien on the left. She met it on the half volley with her right foot and sent it into the middle of the net from a difficult angle. Pure instinct, zero hesitation.

The Turning Point

That goal changed the shape of everything. Seattle no longer needed to force the issue, and Houston, with one shot on target to its name, suddenly had to chase a game it had barely been able to touch. Dahlien nearly doubled the lead almost immediately, pulling a left-footed shot just wide on a fast break in the 54th minute and then forcing Campbell into another save in the 55th.

Houston's changes arrived on the hour, with Miljana Ivanovic and Khyah Harper coming on, but the Dash never built real pressure. Fishel missed from the middle of the box in the 69th minute, Phoebe McClernon sent a shot over in the 72nd, and in the 80th Dahlien stole the ball, raced in alone and forced Campbell into her best save of the night from the center of the box. The Reign said Dahlien went to ground in the area again on the rebound, and play continued.

Seattle saw it out with fresh legs. Madison Curry, Angharad James-Turner, Brittany Ratcliffe, Jess Fishlock and Holly Ward all came off the bench, and Fishlock, back on the field for the final minutes, had a shot blocked in the 89th. Ivanovic and Ratcliffe were booked in stoppage time.

Main Characters

Dahlien was the show: five shots, four on target, one goal. Both clubs listed it as her third of the season, and she was a constant problem running at Houston's back line.

Mercado, whom the Reign called their leading goalscorer, turned provider for the decisive play. Seattle said it was her first assist of the season and the second of her career. Dickey made one save and kept the clean sheet without breaking much of a sweat. Center back Jordyn Bugg did a bit of everything, closing down Faasse's chance before halftime, per the Reign, and taking two shots of her own, one of which Campbell had to save.

Campbell deserves real credit for keeping it to one. The Dash captain made four saves, three of them on Dahlien, according to Houston. Defender Leah Klenke made her 21st start of the season, and the Dash said she leads first-year players in the league in minutes with 1,908. Rader, who Houston said leads all rookies with nine goals, had two of the visitors' four shots.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Seattle 17, Houston 4.
  • On target: Seattle 5, Houston 1.
  • Corners: Seattle earned seven; Houston did not win one.
  • Crosses: Seattle attempted 19; Houston attempted one.
  • Possession: Seattle held 56.6 percent.

What It Means

Seattle improved to 9-4-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 31 points after a loss at Racing Louisville and a draw at Kansas City in its previous two matches. The Reign also flipped the script from May's 0-0 draw in Houston. San Diego Wave FC visits Seattle next Sunday.

Houston fell to 7-5-10 with 26 points and has now lost two straight on the road by a 1-0 score, following a defeat at Bay FC on Aug. 23. That stings after a stretch in which the Dash had won 3-2 at North Carolina and 5-0 at home against Chicago. Houston plays at Orlando next Sunday before returning home to face Utah on Sept. 12.

Closing Take

This one played out like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Campbell won most of the chases, slammed the door again and again, and still watched the mouse escape with the cheese. Houston will leave Seattle knowing that one shot on target is not a game plan, no matter how good the goalkeeper is. Seattle will leave with three points and a forward who looks like she is just getting started.
