Sofia Huerta already owned the NWSL's regular season assist record. On Wednesday night in Spokane, she padded it twice in seven minutes.

Huerta set up two of Seattle Reign FC's three first-half goals as the Reign beat the Kansas City Current 3-0 at ONE Spokane Stadium. Angharad James-Turner opened the scoring in the 18th minute, Brittany Ratcliffe doubled it in the 26th and Maddie Mercado headed in the third in the 33rd, and Claudia Dickey handled the rest. Seattle moved to 2-0-1 with 6 points. Kansas City, the defending NWSL Shield winners per the Reign, dropped to 1-0-2.

Fifteen Minutes of Fury

Kansas City actually had the first look. In the third minute, Gianna Paul's pressure forced a turnover, and Penelope Hocking fired just over from the left side of the box. Seattle answered with a Madison Curry shot over the bar in the fifth minute and a Jess Fishlock effort from the left side of the six-yard box that Lorena saved in the ninth.

Then came the burst. In the 18th minute, Huerta had a shot from distance blocked and Seattle won a corner, its only one of the night. Emeri Adames swung it in, and James-Turner hit a right-footed half-volley from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. 1-0. Per Seattle, it was her first goal since the 2024 season and the third of her NWSL career.

Eight minutes later, Huerta went to work from the right. She delivered a cross, Ratcliffe met it in the center of the box and steered her right-footed finish into the bottom left corner. 2-0. In the 33rd minute, Huerta did it again, and this time Mercado rose to head it into the top right corner. 3-0, three goals in a 15-minute stretch, and the Kansas City back line looked like it had been dropped into a group project with no instructions.

Seattle kept swinging before the break. Mercado and Fishlock both had chances in a frantic flurry between the 34th and 38th minutes. Kansas City's best reply came in the 40th minute, when Ally Sentnor's shot from the center of the box forced Dickey into a save at the top right corner. A VAR check on a possible Seattle penalty just before halftime ended with no call.

Kansas City Searches for a Spark

Kansas City went to its bench in the 58th minute with a triple change, sending on Croix Bethune, Debinha and Lo'eau LaBonta. Debinha brought some instant life, forcing Dickey into a save from outside the box in the 59th minute and having another effort blocked in the 78th. Michelle Cooper came on in the 64th minute, and Kyra Carusa, making her club debut per the Current, followed in the 75th.

Seattle mostly managed the game from there, with Fishlock nearly adding a fourth from distance in the 64th minute. The second half stretched into eight minutes of added time, and Dickey had to stay sharp to the very end, saving a Cooper shot from the right side of the box in the seventh minute of stoppage time before Debinha's free kick slid just wide two minutes later.

Records Everywhere

Huerta's two assists, per Seattle, extended her NWSL regular season assist record to 34. The club said it was her fourth career multi-assist game and her first since 2021, tying Kim Little for the most multi-assist games in league history. Two perfectly placed crosses, two goals, one more line in a résumé that already reads like a cheat code.

Dickey's three saves earned her first shutout of the season and the 14th of her NWSL regular season career, which per the Reign broke a tie with Phallon Tullis-Joyce and made her the club's all-time leader in clean sheets. The club also noted she sat five saves shy of Hope Solo's club record of 187. She would not have to wait long to chase it.

Fishlock's appearance, meanwhile, moved her into second all-time in NWSL history with 218 regular season appearances, per Seattle, trailing only Lauren Barnes. Ratcliffe's goal was her second of the season and the 12th of her NWSL career, and Mercado's header was her second career NWSL goal and her first since the final match of her rookie season in 2024, according to the club.

The Turning Point

The corner in the 18th minute changed everything. Kansas City had started with energy and was holding its own in a cagey opening. One set piece later, Seattle had the lead, and the Current, fielding a lineup the club said featured several first professional starts, had to chase. Within 15 minutes, the chase was over.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Seattle 15, Kansas City 6.
  • Shots on target: Seattle 4, Kansas City 3. Seattle scored on three of its four.

What It Means

Seattle bounced back from a 2-0 loss at the Portland Thorns, its only defeat of the season, after opening with a 2-1 win at the Orlando Pride. Per the Reign, the win stretched its home unbeaten run to eight straight matches, dating back to August 1, 2025. Per the club, it was also the first time Seattle had scored three first-half goals since April 22, 2023. Racing Louisville FC visits Spokane next.

Kansas City opened with a 2-1 win over the Utah Royals but has now lost two straight on the road, at Chicago Stars FC and in Spokane. Per the Current, Laney Rouse made her professional debut in the starting lineup and Paul made her first start for the club. The road trip ends at the Portland Thorns on Saturday.

Closing Take

Seattle's first half felt like a highlight reel stitched together by someone who really likes crosses. Huerta delivered, three different players finished, and Dickey quietly took the club's clean sheet record behind them. Kansas City's debutants will be better for the experience. For one night in Spokane, though, the Reign were playing a different sport.
