Forty-five editions into the Cascadia rivalry, Sunday's chapter had a simple plot: the Portland Thorns kept shooting, and Cassie Miller kept saying no.

Ryanne Brown and Maddie Mercado scored in the first half, Miller made a career-high nine saves, and Seattle Reign FC beat Portland 2-0 at Lumen Field. The Reign, home at Lumen Field for the first time since May according to the club, snapped a two-game losing streak and paid Portland back for a 2-0 loss in Oregon on March 20.

Brown's Long Wait Ends Early

Portland started on the front foot, winning corners in the third and fourth minutes before Jayden Perry headed an Olivia Moultrie cross at Miller in the fifth. Three minutes later, Seattle scored at the other end. Ainsley McCammon set up Brown on the right side of the box, and Brown hit a right-footed shot into the top left corner.

That one was a long time coming. Per the Reign, Brown was making her first start since July 7, 2024, and the goal was the first regular-season strike of her NWSL career. The club said she became the sixth player in its history to score her first NWSL regular-season goal against Portland. McCammon, 18, collected her second assist of the season.

Then the Thorns moved in and started rearranging the furniture. Moultrie forced a save in the 12th minute. Sophia Wilson had long-range efforts blocked in the 13th and 17th, Perry headed another Moultrie cross on target in the 17th, and Pietra Tordin was denied in the 25th, three minutes after having a shot blocked. Miller had four saves before the half-hour mark.

Seattle eventually found its footing. Sally Menti tested Mackenzie Arnold in the 39th minute, and Brown nearly doubled her own tally in the 41st, missing to the right from the six-yard box. The 43rd minute was a blur: Mercado had a shot blocked and Mia Fishel missed to the left before Mercado headed a Sam Meza cross into the bottom right corner.

The Reign said that goal gave Mercado a team-leading three this season, and both of Meza's assists this year have now landed on Mercado's head or feet. Both players came to Seattle in the 2024 NWSL Draft, which the club noted was the league's final college draft. Wilson had one more blocked and one more saved in first-half stoppage time, and it was 2-0 at the break.

Portland Pours It On

The second half looked like a rerun with a darker ending for Portland. Moultrie, Wilson and Tordin all had shots blocked in a two-minute burst starting in the 51st minute, and Miller saved a Jennie Immethun drive in the 52nd. The Thorns sent on Cassandra Bogere and Renee Lyles in the 55th, and Lyles immediately had a shot blocked too.

M.A. Vignola forced Miller into a save from a tight angle in the 67th minute, and Bogere's effort from the six-yard box was blocked moments later. Tordin missed narrowly to the right in the 72nd. Seattle had its own counterpunches. Arnold denied substitute Holly Ward from very close range in the 74th, then stopped Fishel in the 81st.

Portland's last big push came off an 87th-minute corner, when Lyles and Marie Müller both missed narrowly to the left. Miller then saved a Jessie Fleming header in the 88th and a Wilson shot from distance in the first minute of stoppage time. Moultrie fired over in between. Nothing got through.

The Post That Saved Seattle

If one moment decided this game, it came in the 61st minute. Fleming slipped the ball to Tordin on the right side of the box, and Tordin's right-footed shot came back off the left post.

Had that gone in, Seattle would have spent half an hour defending a one-goal lead against a team that finished with 26 shots. Instead, the Reign kept their two-goal cushion, and Portland's pressure turned into a series of increasingly desperate looks that Miller handled one by one.

Who Ran the Show

Cassie Miller was the story. Nine saves, a career high according to the Reign, and her first shutout since March 2024. The club added a stat that belongs in a museum: Miller's last three NWSL shutouts have all come against Portland, with three different clubs, Seattle, Gotham FC and Kansas City.

Ryanne Brown turned a rare start into the opening goal on just two shots. Maddie Mercado added the second, and Sam Meza picked up her second assist of the season, which the Reign said matches her single-season career high set in 2025.

For Portland, Sophia Wilson led all players with eight shots, two on goal. Tordin had five shots and the post. Moultrie had four shots and created chances with her delivery all afternoon.

The Numbers Behind the Clean Sheet

  • Shots: Portland 26, Seattle 17.
  • On goal: Portland 10, Seattle 6.
  • Saves: Miller 9, Arnold 4.
  • Corners: Portland 8, Seattle 3.
  • Clearances: Seattle 32, Portland 22.

Where Both Clubs Stand

Seattle moves to five wins, two draws and six losses with 17 points. It was the Reign's first win since a 2-1 result at Boston on May 22, and it ended a two-game skid that included a 2-1 loss at Washington on May 30 and a 3-1 loss at North Carolina on July 4. It was also Seattle's fourth clean sheet of the season and its first since a scoreless draw with Houston on May 1, per the club. The crowd of 14,793 ranks fourth in club history, the Reign said, and third for a regular-season match.

Portland drops to eight wins, three draws and four losses with 27 points, a week after hammering Racing Louisville FC 4-0.

Both clubs are back on the field Saturday, July 18. Seattle opens a three-match road swing at Gotham FC, while Portland heads to Centennial Stadium for its first meeting with expansion side Denver Summit FC.

Final Word

Portland has to feel like Charlie Brown running at the football right now, and Cassie Miller keeps pulling it away. Three straight NWSL shutouts against the Thorns, three different jerseys. At some point, that stops being a coincidence and starts being a personality trait.
