Paul Rothrock Strikes Late as Seattle Sounders Edge Houston Dynamo 1-0
Paul Rothrock scored in the 83rd minute and Andrew Thomas made three saves as the Seattle Sounders beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on a rainy night at Shell Energy Stadium.

It rained, it dragged, and for 82 minutes it looked destined to end 0-0. Then Paul Rothrock did what Paul Rothrock has been doing all spring.
Rothrock smashed home a one-timer in the 83rd minute, Andrew Thomas made three saves, and the Seattle Sounders beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night. It was a grinder in every sense: a 30-minute delay before kickoff, per the Dynamo, a rain-soaked night, more Houston shots, and a Seattle side that simply refused to concede. On the night captain Cristian Roldan made his 400th Sounders appearance in all competitions, Seattle found a way.
Houston Push, Thomas Answers
Houston started on the front foot. Mateusz Bogusz pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box in the ninth minute, only for Nouhou Tolo to throw himself in the way, per Seattle's recap. Ezequiel Ponce also fired wide from the middle of the box in the same minute.
Seattle's best first-half chance came in the 20th minute, when Jesús Ferreira got in behind and forced Jonathan Bond into a diving save low to his left. Houston answered with the best spell of the half. In the 29th minute, Guilherme drove into the box and aimed for the top corner, and Thomas reacted in a flash to keep it out. On the corner that followed, Felipe Andrade glanced a header just past the far post. Two minutes later, Franco Negri, making his first Dynamo start per the club, headed another corner wide from a tight angle.
The Dynamo kept the pressure on after the break. Guilherme weaved into the left side of the box in the 47th minute and went one-on-one with Thomas, and Thomas won again. In the 65th, Bogusz ran onto a Guilherme pass and forced Thomas into a diving stop from a tight angle.
Schmetzer's Bench Changes the Game
Seattle head coach Brian Schmetzer, who had made five changes to his lineup from the previous league match, went to his bench in the 61st minute. Off went Ferreira, Paul Arriola and Danny Musovski; on came Albert Rusnák, Hassani Dotson and Jordan Morris.
It took a while, but the changes paid off. In the 82nd minute, Rusnák and Peter Kingston both had shots blocked in quick succession. A minute later, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi delivered a cross, Morris got a flick on it toward the far post, and Rothrock arrived first, hammering a first-time right-footed shot high into the middle of the net.
ESPN credited the assist to Morris alone; the Sounders also credited Kossa-Rienzi, and the club said both were their first assists of the season.
Houston threw everything forward late. Héctor Herrera and Ibrahim Aliyu came on in the 88th minute, the latter making his 100th MLS appearance per the club, and new signing Sam Vines made his Dynamo debut in stoppage time. Andrade had two more headers in added time, one high and wide and one blocked, and that was that.
Who Delivered
Paul Rothrock. The winner was his team-leading fifth goal in all competitions, per the club, and Seattle said he now has four goals in his last five games in all competitions. He also picked up a yellow card for a bad foul in the 54th minute, because nobody said grinding was pretty. There was a neat full-circle angle, too: the club noted that Rothrock, a Capitol Hill native and former Sounders academy product, wore cleats signed by Roldan back when he was in high school.
"This guy is a guy I've looked up to for a long time," Rothrock said of Roldan. "It's really cool to get to play beside him."
Andrew Thomas. Three saves, all of them on shots that could have changed the night, and his fifth league shutout, per the club. Seattle said five clean sheets in its first six league matches is a club record to start a season.
Cristian Roldan. The captain's 400th appearance for Seattle in all competitions made him just the second Sounders player to reach that mark across all eras dating back to 1974, joining goalkeeper Stefan Frei, and the first outfield player to do it, per the club.
"I've played in a lot of games," Roldan said. "Careers are short, you never know what's going to happen. I'm just enjoying every moment and still loving the game."
Guilherme. Houston's most dangerous attacker, with two shots on target and a hand in several of the Dynamo's best moments. Bogusz took a match-high four shots of his own. Between them, they did almost everything except beat Thomas, who just would not budge.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Houston 13, Seattle 6.
- Shots on target: Houston 3, Seattle 2.
- Corners: Houston 9, Seattle 3.
- Possession: Seattle 55.1 percent.
- Saves: Thomas 3, Bond 1.
What It Means
Seattle improve to 4-1-1 with 13 points, which the club said left them fifth in the Western Conference. The win closed a five-match MLS road stretch in which the Sounders collected three wins, a draw and a loss, and it extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to six games. They do not play another league match until April 18 against St. Louis CITY SC, with a Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal against Tigres in between, starting Wednesday in Monterrey.
Houston fall to 2-0-3 with six points and have lost back-to-back league games after a 4-3 defeat at FC Dallas before the break. They visit the Colorado Rapids next Saturday.
The Final Word
Schmetzer summed up what the night meant for his captain. "He's just such a tremendous person, and I couldn't be prouder," he said of Roldan.
Seattle are not winning beauty contests right now. They are doing something more useful: winning 1-0 on the road while their attackers rotate and their defense refuses to blink. If that sounds boring, ask the five teams still waiting to score on them this year.
