Lucia Di Guglielmo is paid to stop goals, not score them. In the 70th minute at Audi Field, the Washington Spirit defender wandered into the box anyway, a Mélissa Bethi cross took a deflection into her path, and she poked a left-footed finish past Ann-Katrin Berger into the bottom right corner. Cue 19,215 people losing their minds.

That goal gave the Spirit a 1-0 win over Gotham FC on Saturday afternoon and, according to the club, clinched Washington's third consecutive trip to the NWSL Playoffs. It was Di Guglielmo's first goal since joining the Spirit, and the league counted it as her first in the NWSL. In a rivalry that had belonged to Gotham for two years, that is quite the way to break through.

Washington Takes the Chances, Gotham Takes the Ball

This was a strange one from the start. Gotham had the ball, and Washington had the looks. Clara Luvanga pulled an early shot wide off a Trinity Rodman setup, Andi Sullivan forced Berger into a save in the sixth minute, and Rodman kept attacking like the penalty area owed her money.

Gotham's best first-half moments came in bursts. Guro Reiten made Sandy MacIver work in the 11th minute, Leila Ouahabi, making her Gotham debut, fired wide two minutes later, and Denise O'Sullivan forced another MacIver save in the 34th. Sam Kerr was caught offside twice and did not register a shot all afternoon.

Berger, meanwhile, was busy. She denied Rodman from a tight angle in the 31st minute, stopped Hal Hershfelt from distance in the 42nd and then made the save of the half two minutes later, diving to push a Rodman header over the bar after a Sofia Cantore cross. Not a second of first-half stoppage time was added, and it went to the break 0-0.

Bethi Changes the Game

Washington made one change at halftime, sending on Bethi for Leicy Santos, and it turned out to be the move of the day. Bethi set up a Luvanga shot that Berger saved in the 59th minute. Gotham made a double switch at the same moment, bringing on Taryn Torres and Olivia Wingate, who was making her club debut, and Jaelin Howell was booked soon after.

Then came the 70th minute. Bethi swung in the cross, it caught a deflection, and Di Guglielmo was in the right place. Three minutes later, Washington nearly doubled the lead when Bethi rattled the crossbar from outside the box.

Gotham pushed late but rarely got close. Its brightest moment arrived in the 84th minute, when Wingate teed up O'Sullivan for a right-footed shot that flashed just wide. Taryn Torres was booked deep in stoppage time, and that was that.

The Stars

Di Guglielmo was the hero, with two shots, one on target and a winner nobody saw coming. ESPN listed her at right back, which makes her pop-up appearance in the box even better.

Rodman was the most persistent attacker on the field, with four shots and two on target, and Bethi changed the temperature of the match off the bench. MacIver made two saves and kept a clean sheet.

On the other side, Berger was outstanding in defeat. Her five saves tied for her fourth-most in a match this season, per Gotham, and she kept her team within one goal to the end. Tierna Davidson completed 81 of 88 passes with 103 touches, according to the club, and Mandy Freeman extended her club record with her 131st regular-season appearance. Howell, despite the booking, made her 41st consecutive start, extending the third-longest streak in club history.

The Turning Point

The halftime substitution. Before Bethi arrived, Washington's attack ran almost entirely through Rodman. After it, the Spirit had a second creator, and both the goal and the crossbar came from her boot. Sometimes coaching really is that simple.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Gotham 63 percent, Washington 37 percent.
  • Shots: Washington 13, Gotham 5. On target: 6 to 2.
  • Passing: Gotham completed 455 of 537 passes; Washington completed 244 of 309.
  • Saves: Berger made five, MacIver two.
  • Corners: Washington 7, Gotham 4.

What It Means

Washington moved to 16-4-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 52 points and booked its playoff ticket, becoming the third team in the league to clinch, according to the NWSL. The Spirit also briefly climbed into second, though San Diego Wave FC's win later that night pushed them back to third. It was a welcome result at home, too, after losses to Boston Legacy FC and Angel City FC in Washington's previous two matches at Audi Field. And it evened the season series after Gotham won 1-0 in July.

Gotham stayed in first at 16-7-5 with 55 points, three points clear of Washington after this result, and the club acknowledged that the race for the NWSL Shield tightened with two games left. Per Gotham, it was Washington's first win in two years of rivalry games, ending a five-match winless run that included Gotham's 2025 NWSL Championship win. Gotham also noted that, before Di Guglielmo's goal, Washington had gone more than 550 minutes without scoring against it across all competitions.

The schedule does not get easier. Washington heads to the Kansas City Current for its final regular-season road match, while Gotham visits the Orlando Pride before hosting the Utah Royals on Nov. 1. Amorós sounded unbothered about the Shield math. "It's everything in our hands," he said.

Closing Take

Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós did not hide from the result. "We were able to dominate possession. We definitely needed to be better at creating chances," he said, before adding, "It was probably a game that should have been a draw." Maybe so. But the Spirit had six shots on target to Gotham's two, and the one that went in came from the last player anyone expected. Rivalries are like reality TV: the plot twist is the whole point.
