Before kickoff at Lumen Field, Seattle honored three club legends, inducting Jimmy Gabriel, Sigi Schmid and Kasey Keller into the Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends. By the end of the night, Portland had given the building a different kind of history lesson.

The Portland Timbers beat Seattle Sounders FC 5-1 on Thursday night, with Kevin Kelsy scoring twice and Kamal Miller, Cole Bassett and Alexander Aravena joining the party. According to the Timbers, it was Portland's largest margin of victory in the MLS era in the head-to-head series with Seattle. MLSsoccer.com added that no previous Timbers manager had won at Lumen Field by four or more goals, and that the result matched the heaviest home defeat in Seattle's team history. Interim head coach Jack Cassidy, who MLSsoccer.com said replaced Phil Neville as Portland entered the World Cup break, could not have scripted a better start in a rivalry this heated.

Kelsy Sets the Tone

Portland were on the front foot from the jump. Kelsy had a shot blocked in the 11th minute, Brandon Bye just missed from distance in the 16th, and Kelsy headed wide off a corner a minute later. In the 19th minute he got it right. Jimer Fory carried the ball up from the halfway line, according to the Timbers, and slipped a through ball into the box, where Kelsy flicked a header over Andrew Thomas and into the top of the net.

Thomas kept the Sounders in it for a while, saving from David Da Costa and Antony in the 22nd and 23rd minutes and from Da Costa again in the 34th. Seattle's best first-half look came in the 29th minute, when Kalani Kossa-Rienzi forced James Pantemis into a save from the right side of the box. MLSsoccer.com also credited Miller with a first-half goal-line clearance. Ariel Lassiter then rattled the left post with a direct free kick in the 43rd minute. Portland led 1-0 at the break, and it felt like Seattle had gotten away with one.

Four Goals, One Fall

Seattle's halftime fix was Danny Musovski for Jordan Morris, and it did not help. Thomas denied Antony in the 48th minute, but the floodgates opened eight minutes later. Lassiter lifted a free kick to the back post, Bye headed it back across, and Miller poked a right-footed finish in from point-blank range.

Four minutes later it was 3-0. Kelsy sprang Da Costa down the left on the break, per the Timbers, and Da Costa found Bassett in the middle of the box for a left-footed finish through the middle of the goal. Then, in the 63rd minute, Antony drove down the left and forced Thomas into a save, and Kelsy was there to steer the rebound into the bottom right corner. Three goals in seven minutes. Seattle's coaching staff answered with a triple substitution in the 64th minute, but the game was gone.

The Sounders did find some life late. Musovski, Albert Rusnák and Peter Kingston all forced saves from Pantemis, and a VAR check in the 82nd minute ended with no penalty for Seattle. In the 87th minute Rusnák swung in a corner and Hassani Dotson headed it into the bottom left corner, his first goal of the season according to the Sounders. Portland still had the last word. In the eighth minute of a 10-minute stoppage period, Da Costa laid the ball off to Aravena, who finished from close range for what the Timbers said was his first MLS goal.

Who Ran the Show

Kevin Kelsy scored twice on four shots. According to the Timbers, those were his club-leading sixth and seventh goals of the season, tying his career high for a single season after only 15 games, and he has five goals in his last five appearances. "This was the result of all the daily and weekly work that we put in, and this goal reflected that," Kelsy said of his opener.

David Da Costa was the engine. He set up two goals, put both of his shots on target and was involved in the build-up to a third. The Timbers said he now leads the team with six assists.

Antony was a constant problem down the left, firing a team-high five shots, three on target, and forcing the save that Kelsy cleaned up for the fourth goal.

Kamal Miller scored at one end and, per MLSsoccer.com, cleared one off the line at the other. "Today felt like the perfect start, a brand-new season," he told Apple TV.

Andrew Thomas made five saves and still conceded five. That's the kind of night it was for Seattle.

The Turning Point

The 56th minute. Seattle had survived a lopsided first half down only one goal, and a single moment could have changed the mood inside Lumen Field. Instead, Portland scored from a dead ball, and the Sounders cracked. Two more goals followed within seven minutes, and a tense rivalry game turned into a demolition.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Portland 20, Seattle 11. On target, the Timbers led 10-6.
  • Possession: Portland held 52.4 percent.
  • Corners: Portland earned eight to Seattle's two.
  • Long balls: Portland completed 32 of 55. Seattle completed 15 of 37.
  • Saves: Thomas made five, Pantemis four.

What It Means

Portland improved to 5-2-8 with 17 points. MLSsoccer.com said the win lifted the Timbers to 11th place in the Western Conference, three points off the playoff pace, and the club noted that five goals were their most on the road this season. "The key is to enjoy it. For the players, enjoy it tonight," Cassidy said. Next up is FC Dallas at Providence Park on Wednesday, July 22, Portland's first home match in nearly two months.

Seattle fell to 7-3-4 with 24 points, sixth in the West according to the club. This was the Sounders' first league match since May 24 and their first Cascadia Cup fixture of the season, and it was also their third straight league defeat. They now hit the road for Austin on Wednesday, July 22 and Philadelphia on Saturday, July 25.

The all-time picture, per the Sounders: this was the 125th meeting between the clubs dating back to the NASL in 1974, with Seattle leading 58-48-19, and the MLS regular-season series since 2011 is dead even at 16-16-11.

The Closing Take

Seattle threw a party for its legends and Portland crashed it, ate the cake and left with the DJ. For a team that MLSsoccer.com said sat 13th in the West heading into the break, this was a statement written in giant letters. The Sounders will be hearing about this one in Cascadia for a long time.
