Mina Tanaka spent the better part of Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium knocking politely on Jane Campbell's door. In the 69th minute she stopped knocking and kicked it in.

Tanaka's right-footed finish from the middle of the box, on a low Nuria Rábano cross, gave the Utah Royals a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash in front of 6,637 fans. Utah outshot Houston 17-4, put six attempts on target to Houston's zero and completed a season sweep of the Dash after a 2-0 home win in May. Houston, meanwhile, has now lost four straight.

Campbell Holds the Fort

For about 20 minutes this looked like a fair fight. Sarah Puntigam had a shot from distance blocked in the 11th minute, and Avery Patterson pulled an effort wide of the left post off a corner four minutes later. That was more or less the end of Houston's attacking portfolio for the half.

Utah took over from there, and the final stretch of the first half was a shooting gallery. In the 39th minute Tanaka had one attempt blocked and then followed up with a left-footer toward the bottom right corner, where Campbell got down to it. A minute later Ana Tejada headed at the same corner and Campbell pushed that away too. Rábano then tested her from outside the box in the 42nd, and Cloé Lacasse fired wide in the 44th before forcing another save in the fifth minute of a seven-minute added period.

Scoreless at the break, and Houston's captain was the only reason why.

Two Cards, Then the Dam Breaks

The second half started with Houston on edge. Patterson was booked in the 52nd minute and Danielle Colaprico followed her into the referee's notebook six minutes later. Utah kept leaning. Cece Delzer's left-footed shot in the 61st forced Campbell into a save at the top of the goal, and in the 63rd Tanaka glanced a header off a Miyabi Moriya cross that slid just wide of the right post.

Both benches moved around the hour mark. Houston sent on Natalie Bain and Khyah Harper for Allysha Chapman and Kiki Van Zanten in the 67th minute, and Utah answered a minute later with Paige Cronin for Moriya and Jameese Joseph, making her club debut per the Royals, for Kiana Palacios.

One minute after that, Utah scored. Cronin's long ball into the area started the sequence, according to the club, and once the ball worked its way out to the left, Rábano whipped it low across the face of goal. Tanaka arrived on time and steered it into the bottom right corner. After 68 minutes of near misses, the finish looked almost too easy.

Houston's best reply came in the 73rd minute, when Kat Rader's left-footed effort from the left side of the box sailed over the bar. Joseph nearly doubled the lead in the 72nd from a tight angle on the right, and Lacasse and Narumi Miura both had looks in the 84th and 85th. Paige Nielsen collected Houston's third yellow card in the 88th minute, and five minutes of stoppage time came and went without Mia Justus ever being asked to make a save.

Tanaka Finds Her Moment

Tanaka was the most persistent player on the field. She led all players with five shots, put two on target and scored the only goal that mattered. Utah's recap says it was her fifth game-winning goal of the season, the most any Royal has managed in a single campaign, and the sixth of her Royals career. Whenever Utah needs somebody to drag a tight game across the line, it keeps landing on her doorstep.

Rábano deserves equal billing. The left back created the winner, forced a save of her own from distance and was a constant outlet on a night when Utah attempted 24 crosses. Lacasse and Tejada combined for six shots and kept Houston's back line pinned deep.

Utah head coach Jimmy Coenraets made three changes to the lineup that lost 2-1 to Boston Legacy FC the previous weekend, per the club, including Justus in goal for Mandy McGlynn and Kaleigh Riehl at center back. The defense did not blink. Captain Kate Del Fava, making her 75th straight start according to the Royals, anchored a group that logged 15 interceptions.

On the other side, Campbell was terrific. Five saves, most of them on shots aimed at the corners, and she still finished on the wrong end of a 1-0 score. Goalkeeping can be a cruel business.

The Turning Point

The substitution window between the 67th and 68th minutes decided this one. Houston took off Van Zanten, who had been caught offside three times, and Chapman, while Utah freshened its right side and its front line. Within a minute, Cronin's ball forward and Rábano's cross produced the goal Utah had been threatening all night. The Royals had already put five shots on target without a reward, and the sixth one counted.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Utah 17, Houston 4.
  • Shots on goal: Utah 6, Houston 0. Justus did not need to make a single save.
  • Saves: Campbell made five to keep Houston alive.
  • Crosses: Utah attempted 24 crosses and completed eight, against Houston's nine attempts and two completions.
  • Corners: Utah 7, Houston 2.

What It Means

Utah moves to 13-3-8 with 42 points, and the club's recap placed the Royals third in the league after the result. There is a strange rhythm to their season, though: Utah has alternated wins and losses across its last nine league matches, and the next one on the schedule is a home date with Angel City FC on Sept. 20. The pattern says brace yourself.

Houston drops to 7-5-12 with 26 points. Since a 5-0 win over Chicago Stars FC on Aug. 19, the Dash have lost 1-0 at Bay FC, 1-0 at Seattle Reign FC, 3-1 at Orlando and now 1-0 at home, with a single goal across those four matches. They visit Boston on Sept. 20.

Closing Take

Utah's season has been running like a light switch, flipping from win to loss and back again for weeks. On Saturday, Mina Tanaka was the hand on the switch, and she kept flicking until the lights finally came on. Houston, for its part, needs to find a goal before the lights go out on its own season.
