Seattle Reign FC waited five matches to play at Lumen Field this season. Its welcome-home party lasted 50 seconds. A misplayed back pass, a quick pounce by Mina Tanaka, a lay-off to Paige Cronin, and the Utah Royals were ahead inside the first minute.

It never got better for the hosts. Utah won 3-0 on Sunday evening, with Cronin, Narumi Miura and Cloé Lacasse all scoring in the first half in front of 8,211 fans. The Royals say it was the largest away win in club history in NWSL play and their first road win over Seattle since 2019. Cronin's opener, per the club, was the fastest goal in Royals history and the 14th fastest in league history.

Fifty Seconds, Then Seven Minutes

Cronin did not need an invitation. Tanaka nicked the loose ball after Seattle's back-pass mix-up and slipped it to the Utah captain, who smashed a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the top left corner. The Royals say it broke the club record of three minutes set by Lacasse in 2024.

Six minutes later, Utah doubled the damage. A corner bounced around the box before Kaleigh Riehl played it back toward the edge of the area, and Miura's strike from outside the box flew into the top right corner. It was Miura's first goal of the season and her first for the Royals, in a match the club says was both her first start of 2026 and her Utah debut. The Royals also say it was the first time Seattle had ever conceded twice in the opening 10 minutes of a match since joining the league as a founding member.

Seattle tried to respond. Maddie Mercado sent Brittany Ratcliffe through in the 19th minute, but Mia Justus saved her effort. Jess Fishlock tried what the Reign described as a bicycle kick in the 33rd, and it slid just wide. At the other end, Claudia Dickey pulled off a flying fingertip save on a long-range Tanaka rocket in the 34th, and Ana Tejada smacked the right post from distance in the 44th.

Then, in first-half stoppage time, Tejada threaded a pass for Lacasse, whose left-footed finish from the centre of the box beat Dickey into the bottom left corner. Three goals, one half, and the Lumen Field crowd was suddenly very quiet.

The Turning Point

The match was effectively over by the seventh minute. The Royals say they entered the night 16-0-1 when leading by two or more goals, and the two-goal cushion arrived faster than at any point in club history. Seattle had to chase from there, and chasing a well-organized Utah side for 83 minutes is the soccer equivalent of running uphill in sand.

The Royals say the three-goal first half was only the fifth in club history, and Seattle had not conceded three first-half goals at home since May 2023 against Gotham FC.

Seattle Pushes, Justus Answers

To its credit, Seattle came out pushing after halftime. Maddie Dahlien replaced Ratcliffe in the 55th minute and nearly made an instant impact, forcing Justus into a low save in the 63rd. Mercado blasted over from a corner in the 62nd and had another shot blocked in the 64th.

The night took a tough turn for the hosts in the 64th minute when Fishlock went down injured. She was replaced by Emeri Adames four minutes later, and the Reign say she left the field to a chorus of cheers.

Justus saved her best for the 72nd minute, diving to deny a swerving Mercado strike from outside the box that the Royals say came back off the crossbar. Justus later had to come off injured in the 82nd minute, and Mandy McGlynn finished the match in goal, making her 2026 debut. Nine minutes of stoppage time came and went without a Seattle goal.

Star Turns

Paige Cronin scored the fastest goal in club history in her first start of the season, and the strike was also her first goal of 2026. She put one of her two shots on target before making way for Alexa Spaanstra in the 60th minute.

Narumi Miura marked her Royals debut with a goal, and Cloé Lacasse finished off the first half with authority. Ana Tejada assisted the third goal and hit the post. Mina Tanaka set up the opener and forced Dickey into her best save.

Mia Justus made five saves for the clean sheet. For Seattle, Maddie Mercado was the most dangerous player on the field, with four shots and two on target, and Claudia Dickey made two saves despite conceding three.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Utah 14, Seattle 9. On target: 5 apiece.
  • Saves: Justus 5, Dickey 2.
  • Crosses: Seattle attempted 23 and completed only 4.
  • Tackles: Utah won 18 of 24, Seattle 9 of 17.
  • Possession: Utah 52.7 percent, Seattle 47.3.

What It Means

Utah moves to three wins, one draw and two losses with 10 points, and the Royals listed themselves third in the standings after the match. After opening with defeats to Kansas City and San Diego, Utah has now won three straight, at Boston Legacy FC, at home against Chicago Stars FC and now in Seattle, and is unbeaten in four. Head coach Jimmy Coenraets made three changes to his starting lineup, per the club, and two of the three newcomers, Cronin and Miura, scored. The Royals visit Angel City FC on Saturday, May 2, before hosting the Houston Dash on Wednesday, May 6.

Seattle drops to three wins, one draw and two losses, also with 10 points, and the Royals' recap listed the Reign fourth. It was Seattle's first defeat as the home team this season, after two wins and a draw in Spokane. The Reign visit the Houston Dash on Friday, May 1.

The Final Word

Seattle threw a homecoming party at Lumen Field and Utah showed up like the guest who takes over the aux cord in the first minute. Fifty seconds, seven minutes, one stoppage-time dagger. For a team that lost its first two matches of the season, it was a statement in all caps.
