Brian White does not really do subtle. On Saturday night at BC Place he chipped one, hammered at Zack Steffen all evening, missed a couple he will see in his sleep, and then finished the job in the 85th minute anyway.

The Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1, with Cheikh Sabaly scoring early and White adding two more around a Rafael Navarro goal for Colorado. It was Vancouver's fourth straight win, it came in front of 27,588 fans, and it pushed the 'Caps to 8-0-1.

Vancouver Come Flying Out

The Whitecaps played like a team that knew it was about to spend May on the road. Emmanuel Sabbi headed a corner just wide in the fourth minute, and three minutes later the hosts were ahead. Vancouver's report traced it back to a Sebastian Berhalter ball for Édier Ocampo, whose cross to the back post was turned into the middle by Thomas Müller for Sabaly to slide home from the center of the box. ESPN credits Müller with the assist.

White's first came in the 23rd minute, about a minute after he had been flagged offside. Andrés Cubas threaded a through ball between two Colorado defenders, Steffen came charging out, and White beat him from outside the box into the bottom right corner. Per the Whitecaps, it was White's seventh goal of the season, and the club referred to him as its second all-time scorer.

Steffen was the only reason it stayed 2-0. He saved from White in the 27th minute and from Berhalter two minutes later, and the Whitecaps' own report said the margin would have been bigger without him.

Navarro Keeps Colorado Alive

Colorado scored with their first real burst. In the 32nd minute, Hamzat Ojediran launched a long ball for Georgi Minoungou, whose cross caused chaos in the six-yard box, according to the Rapids. Yohei Takaoka saved Navarro's first attempt from point-blank range, but Navarro stayed with it and squeezed a left-footed finish into the bottom left corner. Vancouver's report said the goal stood after a lengthy VAR check for a possible handball.

The goal carried weight on both sides. Per the Rapids, it was Navarro's 50th regular-season goal contribution for the club, making him the eighth player in club history to reach the mark, and it gave him 11 goal contributions across his last nine matches. Per Vancouver, it was also the first goal the 'Caps had conceded with Cubas on the field across all competitions, ending a 644-minute run.

The Turning Point

Vancouver controlled the second half without killing it. Steffen saved White from close range in the 50th minute, Sabaly pulled a shot wide, and White then missed with a header and a close-range effort in the 72nd and 73rd.

Then came the moment that could have flipped the night. Substitute Bruno Caicedo scrambled the ball in during the 77th minute, but VAR ruled it out for handball, and the score stayed 2-1. Colorado had life.

It did not last. In the 85th minute, Vancouver broke, Caicedo provided the final pass, and White finished left-footed from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. Navarro nearly answered two minutes later, but Takaoka stood up to deny him from close range, and the Rapids' late pressure through nine minutes of stoppage time came to nothing.

The Standouts

Brian White scored twice from six shots, four of them on target, and was the Whitecaps' Man of the Match. Vancouver said he now has eight MLS goals this season.

Thomas Müller set up the opener, which the club said was his 15th goal contribution in only 16 MLS regular-season matches, and he had two looks of his own before halftime.

Zack Steffen made five saves and kept Colorado in it far longer than the run of play suggested.

Rafael Navarro took six shots, put three on target and scored the milestone goal.

Andrés Cubas provided the pass of the night for White's opener, and Vancouver had not conceded with him on the field until Navarro's goal.

Bruno Caicedo came off the bench to assist the clincher and take four shots, and he had another goal wiped off by VAR.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Vancouver took 20 to Colorado's 13.
  • Shots on target: Vancouver eight, Colorado three.
  • Saves: Steffen made five, Takaoka three.
  • Possession: Colorado held 54.8 percent but could not turn it into much.
  • Fouls: Vancouver committed 24 to Colorado's 12, a sign of how hard the 'Caps worked to break up Colorado's buildup.

What It Means

Vancouver move to 8-0-1 with 24 points. According to the club, that is the best start of their MLS era, and they became only the second MLS team in the post-shootout era to win eight of their first nine matches, joining this year's San Jose Earthquakes. The win also equalled their best MLS winning streak at four straight victories, per the Whitecaps. The club called it their largest crowd of the season, and its notes added that the 'Caps remain unbeaten in MLS play under Sørensen when they score first: 25 wins and four draws.

Next comes the hard part. Vancouver begin five straight away matches in May, starting at the LA Galaxy on May 2.

Colorado fall to 4-1-5 with 13 points and are now winless in three since their 6-2 rout of Houston, with losses to Inter Miami and Vancouver around a scoreless draw at LAFC. The Rapids noted this was their fourth game in 12 days. Their next match is in the U.S. Open Cup against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks on April 29.

Closing Take

Colorado's own recap called Vancouver the reigning Western Conference champions, and on nights like this the 'Caps play like it. White is the closer in a Fast and Furious finale: you can see him coming all night and you still cannot stop him at the end. The 'Caps head south with the best start of their MLS era and a striker who simply refuses to be quiet.
