San Diego Wave FC had the ball, the corners, the crowd and the shot count. The Houston Dash had Jane Campbell, and on Saturday night that turned out to be the better hand.

Makenzy Robbe scored in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time and Campbell made nine saves as Houston won 1-0 at Snapdragon Stadium, spoiling the Wave's home opener in front of 14,078 fans. Per the Dash, it was the club's first season-opening win since 2017 and its first road win ever on opening weekend. Houston starts 1-0-0 with 3 points. San Diego starts 0-0-1.

Pressure Without the Payoff

San Diego set the tone almost immediately. Perle Morroni tested Campbell from distance in the third minute, Kennedy Wesley headed a Gia Corley delivery at goal in the eighth, and a minute later Dudinha fired from the left side of the box. Campbell saved all three. On the Dudinha chance, according to Houston, the ball squirmed toward the far post before Malia Berkely cleared it away. Ludmila then sent a shot just past the top right corner in the 11th minute.

Houston's best answer came in the 27th minute. Maggie Graham found Linda Ullmark in the middle, and the rookie's right-footed shot smacked off the left post. Ullmark's follow-up was blocked, and DiDi Haracic saved from Kate Faasse moments later.

The first half was choppy, with stoppages for Gabi Portilho, Haracic and Mimi Van Zanten, and the fourth official added five minutes. Dudinha had one more look from outside the box in the sixth minute of added time, and Campbell held her ground again. Then came the twist. Graham lofted a pass in behind the Wave defense, and Robbe ran onto it on the right side of the box and finished low into the bottom left corner. 1-0, moments before halftime. According to the Dash, it was Robbe's first goal for the club. According to the Wave, she used to play for them. Football is undefeated.

The Siege

Van Zanten did not return after halftime, with Kiki Pickett coming on, and the second half was one long San Diego possession. The Wave won five corners between the 64th and 66th minutes alone. Campbell tipped a Ludmila shot over the bar in the 64th minute, Ludmila's header from a Kenza Dali cross was blocked two minutes later, and Kristen McNabb headed wide from point-blank range in the 73rd.

Houston also lost Faasse to an injury in the 57th minute, with Clarissa Larisey replacing her and Yazmeen Ryan coming on for Ullmark at the same time.

The 75th to 80th minutes were Campbell's personal highlight reel. She stopped Ludmila from the middle of the box in the 75th. In the 77th, she kicked away a Lia Godfrey shot and then got a hand to Corley's rebound. In the 80th, she denied Ludmila again from very close range. Melanie Barcenas had a shot blocked, Pickett headed wide in the 86th minute, and San Diego's last real look, a Pickett effort in stoppage time, was blocked. Houston defended six added minutes and walked off with the points.

The Turning Point

Robbe's goal deep in first-half stoppage time. San Diego had controlled the half without scoring, and a 0-0 halftime score would have left the Wave feeling like the goal was coming. Instead, Houston struck at the worst possible time for the hosts and spent the second half doing what it does best on this night: sitting deep, clearing everything and letting its captain handle the rest.

Campbell Stands on Her Head

Nine saves. Per the Dash, it was the most saves in a Houston shutout win since a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on July 22, 2018. It was also Campbell's 43rd regular season clean sheet, according to the club, putting her fifth in league history. Nicole Barnhart holds the record with 52.

Robbe made her only shot count. Graham, who had the assist and also set up the Ullmark chance off the post, ran the midfield on limited possession. The back four of Berkely, Paige Nielsen, Leah Klenke and Avery Patterson absorbed wave after wave of pressure. Pun intended.

Houston also leaned on youth. Per the Dash, Faasse, Ullmark, Klenke and Kat Rader all made their professional debuts, and it was the first time the club used four first-year players in an opening match since at least 2020.

For San Diego, Ludmila was the most dangerous player on the field, with six shots and three on target in her Wave debut. Portilho also debuted for the club, and rookies Godfrey, Tatum Wynalda and Van Zanten made their professional debuts, per the Wave.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: San Diego 70.5 percent, Houston 29.5.
  • Shots: San Diego 19, Houston 5. On target: 9 to 2.
  • Corners: San Diego 14, Houston 2.
  • Clearances: Houston 42, San Diego 5.
  • Saves: Campbell 9, Haracic 1.

What It Means

Houston has a road win in the bank before playing a home game. The Dash host Boston Legacy FC in their home opener at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday, March 21, and the club said it would share an update on Faasse in the coming days.

San Diego did almost everything except finish. The Wave's first road match is at the Utah Royals on Sunday, March 22. If Ludmila keeps getting six shots a night, the goals will come. They just did not come on opening night, and in a league this tight, three points left on your own field can matter in October.

Closing Take

This was Houston's Moneyball night: no style points, maximum efficiency. Five shots, two on target, one goal, three points. San Diego played the prettier soccer and lost the only stat that counts. Campbell, meanwhile, made a strong early case for the season's most valuable pair of gloves. The Wave will look back at nine shots on target and wonder how none went in. The answer wore No. 1 and the captain's armband.
