The Vancouver Whitecaps spent their midweek getting pushed around by Seattle in the Concacaf Champions Cup. On Sunday afternoon at BC Place, Minnesota United FC got the bill for it.

Vancouver won 6-0, scored four times before halftime and turned a Matchday 4 fixture into a history lesson. Per the AP, it was the largest margin of victory ever for Vancouver, while Minnesota tied the club's single-game mark for goals conceded and set the record for largest margin of defeat. The Whitecaps are 4-0-0 with 12 points, and MLS says they are the league's first team to start a season 4W-0L-0D with a +13 goal differential.

Twenty-Two Minutes of Pure Chaos

Aziel Jackson fired the warning shot over the bar in the third minute. Three minutes later, Jeevan Badwal went down under a challenge from Kyle Duncan, and the referee pointed to the spot.

Sebastian Berhalter drove the eighth-minute penalty into the high center of the goal. 1-0, and it was about to get ugly.

In the 13th minute, Emmanuel Sabbi got down the right and crossed for Brian White, who finished right-footed from the center of the box into the bottom right corner.

Badwal rattled the right post in the 21st minute after a Mathías Laborda through ball. A minute later, Laborda swept a left-footed finish in from very close range after a set piece, a Berhalter free kick by the club's account. Three goals in 22 minutes, and the Loons were still looking for their first shot on target.

The Turning Point: Minnesota's Post, Vancouver's Dagger

Minnesota's one real chance to make this a game came in the 38th minute. Kyle Duncan crossed, Nectarios Triantis hit a right-footed shot from the center of the box, and the ball smacked off the left post. A goal there makes it 3-1 and gives the Loons a reason to believe at halftime.

Instead, five minutes later, Berhalter found Sabbi on the right side of the box, and the winger drilled a right-footed shot across goal into the bottom left corner. 4-0 at the break. The Whitecaps said it was only the second time in the club's MLS era that they scored four in a first half, the previous one coming in a 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Sept. 13, 2025.

Minnesota made two changes at halftime, sending on DJ Taylor for Carlos Harvey and Bongokuhle Hlongwane for Duncan. It did not take. Taylor brought down Jackson in the box in the 52nd minute, and White sent the second penalty of the day into the bottom left corner two minutes later. 5-0.

Golden Boot Cameos and a First Goal

James Rodríguez entered for Tomás Chancalay in the 64th minute, which MLS noted was his Loons debut. His cross set up Kelvin Yeboah's 69th-minute header, which Yohei Takaoka saved. Thomas Müller arrived for Jackson in the 77th, and the Whitecaps said the afternoon was the first match in MLS history to feature two FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winners. Weird flex, but a real one.

The bench also produced the final goal. Cheikh Sabaly, one of three Vancouver substitutes in the 65th minute, had a shot saved by Drake Callender in the 70th and then finished a Laborda feed with his left foot from the right side of the six-yard box in the 74th. Per the AP, it was his first MLS goal, in his second career appearance. Sebastian Schonlau, another 65th-minute arrival, made his Whitecaps FC and MLS debut, according to the club.

Star Watch: Berhalter Runs the Show

Berhalter was the club's Man of the Match, and it was not close. He scored the opening penalty, set up Sabbi's goal and took three shots before coming off in the 65th minute. ESPN's data gives him one assist; the club and MLS also credited him on White's opener.

Head coach Jesper Sørensen sounded like a man describing his team's operating system. "He's an important player for us because he's in the middle of everything. He's in the middle of the way we play. He's in the middle of how we build our play," Sørensen said, per MLS. He added: "He is also, I think, the only player that has started all games for us now this season, and we know that we can rely on him."

White scored twice on two shots, both on target. The AP noted it was his second consecutive two-goal game and his third straight game with a goal. The second one also made him the first player in the club's MLS era to reach 100 goal contributions, with 84 goals and 16 assists for the Whitecaps across all competitions, per the AP. MLS said his five goals have him tied with FC Dallas striker Petar Musa for the early Golden Boot lead.

Laborda and Sabbi each added a goal and an assist, their first goals of the season per the club. Takaoka made four saves for his third shutout of the season, per the AP, twice denying Jefferson Díaz headers.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Vancouver 16, Minnesota 8, with the Whitecaps putting 8 on target to Minnesota's 4.
  • Possession: Vancouver 50.3 percent, Minnesota 49.7 percent. Even ball, six-goal gap.
  • Penalties: Vancouver went 2 for 2 from the spot, with Badwal and Jackson drawing the fouls.
  • Tackles: The Whitecaps attempted 23 and won 14; Minnesota attempted 11.
  • Saves: Takaoka 4, Callender 2.

What It Means

Vancouver is 4-0-0 with 12 points after wins over Real Salt Lake, Toronto FC, Portland and now Minnesota, scoring 14 goals and allowing one along the way. The club said Vancouver has not conceded a goal at home in MLS play this season and that the run equals its best start to an MLS season, which it also managed last season. MLS added that Vancouver is the first team in league history to start 4W-0L-0D in consecutive seasons.

The bigger test comes Wednesday in Spokane, where Vancouver trails Seattle 3-0 on aggregate going into the second leg of their Champions Cup Round of 16 series. "It doesn't mean we're a bad team losing one game," Berhalter said, per MLS. San Jose visits BC Place on Saturday.

Minnesota falls to 1-1-2 with 4 points after back-to-back road losses at Nashville and Vancouver by a combined 9-1.

Closing Take

Somebody told the Whitecaps that one bad night in the Champions Cup did not define them, and they took it personally in the full Michael Jordan sense. On the task of overturning a three-goal deficit against Seattle, Berhalter kept it short: "It's not impossible." After Sunday, nobody at BC Place is laughing at the idea.
