At the 90-minute mark on Saturday night, the Vancouver Whitecaps were losing to their Cascadia rivals at home and headed for back-to-back home losses. Five minutes of stoppage time later, the party was on.

Thomas Müller converted a stoppage-time penalty, Sebastian Berhalter buried a winner from outside the box in the fifth minute of added time, and the Whitecaps beat the Portland Timbers 3-2 in front of a season-high crowd of 25,465. Portland had led 2-1 since the end of the first half thanks to Juan Mosquera, who scored one and set up another in his season debut. It was not enough.

A Goalkeeper Assist and a Wonder Volley

The opener was pure chaos theory. In the sixth minute, Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka hit a first-time ball out of his own box that sent Édier Ocampo in behind the Portland defense. Ocampo took it around James Pantemis and slotted a left-footed finish into the empty net from just outside the box. Takaoka's assist was his first of the season and third of his Whitecaps career, per the club.

Vancouver then laid siege. Pantemis stopped Cheikh Sabaly from close range in the 16th minute after a Müller knockdown, then saved a Mathías Laborda header from a Berhalter cross. Aziel Jackson, Müller and Brian White all missed the target in a three-minute flurry.

Portland answered with the goal of the night. In the 36th minute, after a Timbers corner, a Vancouver clearance dropped to Mosquera outside the box, and the defender hit a right-footed volley into the top left corner. A few minutes later, Takaoka had to work, stopping Kevin Kelsy's header from the middle of the box.

Then, two minutes into first-half stoppage time, Mosquera struck again, this time as a provider. He intercepted a Vancouver clearance in the box and laid it off to David Da Costa, who chipped the onrushing Takaoka from inside the six-yard box. Portland took a 2-1 lead into the break, and Da Costa had his first goal since July 13, 2025, per the club.

The Long Wait for a Breakthrough

Mosquera did not come out for the second half, with Brandon Bye replacing him, and Vancouver sent on Emmanuel Sabbi for Jackson. The Whitecaps camped in Portland's half. White's header from a Berhalter cross was saved in the 55th minute, Pantemis denied Sabbi from close range eight minutes later, and Bruno Caicedo, making his club and MLS debut off the bench, forced another stop in the 76th.

Portland, for their part, were reduced to clearing everything in sight. Diego Chará came on in the 77th minute and was booked three minutes later, his 124th yellow card in MLS, which the Timbers said makes him the league's all-time leader in cautions. Not every record needs a parade.

Stoppage-Time Mayhem

The turning point came in the 89th minute. After an Ocampo shot went wide following a corner, Antony was penalized for a handball in the box. Müller, who according to MLS had gone five games across all competitions without a goal contribution, stepped up in the first minute of stoppage time and smashed his penalty high down the middle. It was his third goal of the season, per the club.

Four minutes later, the comeback was complete. Sabbi's shot from the right side of the box was blocked, the ball broke to the top of the area, and Berhalter hit a first-time right-footed shot through traffic into the bottom left corner.

"To score two goals in stoppage time shows a lot," Berhalter said postgame, per MLSsoccer.com. "It shows belief, and it shows that we believe in each other and that it doesn't matter if we're 2-1 down in the 91st minute. We still have a chance."

The Stars

Sebastian Berhalter. The club's man of the match. His winner was his fourth goal of the season across all competitions and his eighth goal contribution, per Vancouver, and his crosses produced two of Vancouver's best headed chances, one in each half. MLS also noted he started for the U.S. men's national team against Portugal in the last international window.

Thomas Müller. One cool penalty under maximum pressure, plus the headed pass that set up Sabaly's early chance. Legends tend to find their moment.

Juan Mosquera. A goal, an assist and 45 minutes of work. The Timbers said he became the seventh player in club history to score and assist in his first appearance of a season.

James Pantemis. Six saves, several of them from close range. Portland's keeper kept his side in front until the 91st minute.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Vancouver 61 percent, Portland 39.
  • Shots: Vancouver 22, Portland 8. Shots on target: 9 to 3.
  • Saves: Pantemis 6, Takaoka 1.
  • Clearances: Portland 36, Vancouver 14.
  • Crosses: Vancouver attempted 28 to Portland's 9.

What It Means

Vancouver improve to 5-0-1 with 15 points, which the club called their best start of the MLS era. Per the Whitecaps, they are also still unbeaten in MLS play under head coach Jesper Sørensen when scoring first, at 22 wins, no losses and four draws. Add a 4-1 win at Providence Park on March 7, and Vancouver have now beaten Portland twice in a month.

Portland drop to 1-1-4 with four points and have not won in five league matches since their opening-day victory over Columbus. New signing José Caicedo made his club and MLS debut in the loss, playing the full 90.

Vancouver host New York City FC next Saturday. Portland return to Providence Park to face LAFC the same day.

The Last Word

Berhalter framed the comeback as something bigger than one night. "It's our identity, it's who we want to be," he said. "It's part of who we are and it's fun."

Every great sitcom has a running gag, and Vancouver's is the late plot twist. Portland held on for 89 minutes and left with nothing. The Whitecaps simply refused to let the episode end on their rivals' terms.
