Brian White Scores Twice as Whitecaps Rout Timbers 4-1 in Cascadia Cup Opener
Brian White scored twice and Sebastian Berhalter had a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Portland Timbers 4-1 at Providence Park to move to 3-0-0.

Brian White does not need the ball for long. In the 21st minute he slid in at the six-yard box and poked a Sebastian Berhalter delivery past James Pantemis with his right foot. In the 87th he took a Kenji Cabrera through ball in stride and slotted it with his left. Two shots, two goals, and a long night for the home side.
Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Portland Timbers 4-1 on Saturday night in the match that, per the Timbers, kicked off the 2026 Cascadia Cup. Tristan Blackmon and Berhalter also scored for the 'Caps, who are 3-0-0 and have now scored eight goals while conceding one in league play. Portland's only reply was a genuine moment for the home crowd of 22,473: 18-year-old Eric Izoita, making his MLS debut, curled in a beauty from distance.
White Strikes First
Portland actually had the first looks. Kristoffer Velde had a shot blocked in the 11th minute and Alexander Aravena sent one high and wide off a corner a minute later.
The opener was a team goal. According to the Whitecaps, Jeevan Badwal won the ball on the far touchline and moved it to Édier Ocampo, whose diagonal cross found Berhalter. Berhalter's looping ball dropped for White, who slid in to finish from point-blank range. 1-0 in the 21st minute.
The visitors kept the pressure on for the rest of the half. Pantemis saved a Thomas Müller effort from distance in the 33rd and an Aziel Jackson attempt from a tight angle in the 41st, and Badwal had a shot blocked in the same minute. Berhalter and Müller both missed the target before the break. Portland went into halftime without a shot on goal.
The Nose Knows
If the first goal was a highlight-reel move, the second was pure chaos. In the 49th minute, a Berhalter free kick dropped for Blackmon at the far post, and he hit the left post from close range. The Whitecaps said the rebound bounced back up into Blackmon's face and rolled over the line past a fallen Pantemis. ESPN's match data simply logs it as a finish from very close range. 2-0, and nobody in blue and white cared how it went in.
The Timbers went to the bench, sending on Gage Guerra in the 54th minute and Ariel Lassiter in the 62nd. One minute after Lassiter came on, Vancouver struck again. Jackson raced down the left, skipped past a challenge, according to the club, and laid it off for Berhalter, whose right-footed shot from the middle of the box found the bottom left corner. 3-0.
Izoita's Moment
The best moment of the night for the Timbers came in the 72nd minute. Joao Ortiz played the ball to Izoita at the top of the box, and the teenager took a touch and bent a left-footed shot into the top right corner. Top bins.
The Timbers said it was Izoita's first professional goal and made him the youngest goal scorer in club history. The club added that he is the 13th player to score in his debut for Portland and the first Timbers Academy product to score in his MLS debut. At 18 years and 180 days, he is also the second youngest player to debut with a start for the club, behind Marco Farfan. He played the full 90 minutes.
That goal also ended something for Vancouver. Before Izoita's strike, the Whitecaps said, they had set a club MLS-era record for a shutout streak to open a season at 432 minutes across all competitions.
Velde tried to build on it, but Takaoka saved his long-range effort in the 75th minute. White then closed the door. The club said Berhalter forced a turnover near midfield, Cabrera slipped White through, and the striker finished low into the bottom left corner. 4-1 in the 87th minute. Antony hit the right post for Portland in stoppage time, which summed up the evening.
Who Ran the Show
Sebastian Berhalter was the best player on the field. A goal, an assist on White's opener and the set piece that produced Blackmon's goal. The club said he now has two goals and two assists across all competitions this season.
Brian White scored on both of his shots. The Whitecaps said he has scored in back-to-back matches, has three MLS goals this season and has reached 98 goal contributions for the club across all competitions. The two goals were his eighth and ninth against Portland in a Vancouver shirt, the most he has against any opponent, per the club.
Aziel Jackson set up Berhalter's goal, his first assist for the club according to Vancouver, and Cabrera added an assist after coming on in the 69th minute.
For Portland, Velde led the team with four shots.
The Turning Point
The Blackmon goal early in the second half. Portland had survived the first-half pressure and was only one goal down. A goal off the post and off a face is the kind of break that drains a building, and Vancouver scored again 14 minutes later.
