Thomas Müller Brace Sinks Toronto FC 3-0 as Brian White Climbs to Second on Whitecaps All-Time Scoring List
Thomas Müller scored twice and Brian White netted his 80th Whitecaps goal, second most in club history, as Vancouver beat Toronto FC 3-0 at BC Place.

Toronto FC has spent recent months adding big names. Vancouver spent 45 minutes reminding everyone who runs Canadian soccer right now.
The Whitecaps beat Toronto 3-0 on Saturday night at BC Place, and all three goals came before halftime. Thomas Müller scored twice, first from the penalty spot and then off a corner, and Brian White poked home a third in first-half stoppage time. That goal was White's 80th for the club across all competitions, which the Whitecaps say moves him alone into second place on their all-time scoring list, behind only Domenic Mobilio and his 170.
Vancouver had 59.5 percent of the ball and 14 shots to Toronto's 5, and the visitors did not attempt a single shot until the 67th minute. A crowd of 24,533 watched the 'Caps go 2-0-0 and keep their season spotless.
A Penalty, a Corner, a Knockout
Vancouver threatened early. In the 12th minute Sebastian Berhalter slipped White through with a clever pass and Luka Gavran stretched to save in the bottom right corner. Three minutes later Müller swung a left-footed shot wide from the middle of the box, set up by Berhalter.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute. White nodded a ball out to Aziel Jackson on the left, Jackson drove at the defense, and Walker Zimmerman brought him down in the area. Müller stepped up and sent his penalty into the bottom left corner in the 25th minute, Gavran going the wrong way.
Then Berhalter's set pieces took over. In the 37th minute, his corner reached Mathías Laborda, whose header across the face of goal found Müller in the center of the box, and the German finished into the bottom left corner. In first-half stoppage time another corner caused chaos, ricocheting off Toronto bodies before White tapped it in from close range.
Three first-half corners, two goals, one very long walk to the locker room for Toronto.
Toronto Wakes Up Too Late
Toronto answered at halftime with a double change: Raheem Edwards replaced Kobe Franklin and Zane Monlouis replaced Kosi Thompson. The second half was quieter, which suited the hosts just fine. Müller nearly completed a hat trick in the 48th minute with a strike from outside the box that went just over the bar. Andrés Cubas went close from distance in the 65th.
Toronto's first attempt finally arrived in the 67th minute, a Dániel Sallói effort off a set piece that sailed high and wide. José Cifuentes forced Yohei Takaoka into a save from inside the six-yard box in the 74th, Zimmerman headed wide a minute later, and substitute Emilio Aristizábal forced Takaoka into a save in the top left corner in the 89th.
Jesper Sørensen turned to his bench in the 71st minute. Müller, Édier Ocampo and Aziel Jackson came off, with J.C. Ngando, Tate Johnson and Cheikh Sabaly coming on. For Sabaly, the Senegalese forward who arrived from FC Metz three weeks ago per the club, it was his Whitecaps debut.
Müller Keeps Collecting
Thomas Müller had two goals on four shots in 71 minutes, and they were his first two goals of the season. The club says he now has 11 goals in his first 17 appearances across all competitions, the most any Whitecaps player has scored through his first 17 appearances in the club's MLS era. The club's match report calls him the Raumdeuter. Toronto's back line would just call him a problem.
White, who scored the third, put the Müller effect simply.
"He's seen the game at the highest level, he's achieved the biggest things he can achieve in the sport," White said. "So I think it's all of us learning from him."
Brian White had two shots on target and the goal that carried him past every Whitecap not named Mobilio. It was also his first goal of 2026.
Sebastian Berhalter was everywhere: three shots, the through ball that created White's early chance, and the corners behind the second and third goals.
Mathías Laborda, back at left back in one of four changes from Wednesday's Concacaf Champions Cup match, picked up the assist on Müller's second.
The Turning Point
The 24th minute. Toronto had survived the early pressure and the game was still level when Jackson went past Zimmerman and hit the turf. One penalty later Vancouver had the lead, and Sørensen could see the lift it gave his side.
"Today we got an early break, and you can see that it really gave energy to the team," he said. "You can see that from the rest of the first half, and then in the second half we didn't really find any rhythm."

What It Means
Vancouver is 2-0-0 with 6 points after a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on opening weekend, and the club said this was a fourth straight clean sheet to start the season across all competitions, 360 minutes and counting. The Whitecaps have also gone nine straight meetings with Toronto unbeaten across all competitions, dating to 2020, per the club.
Midfielder Jeevan Badwal summed up what the night meant in the dressing room.
"Beating another Canadian team, it means a lot to me and the players," he said. "And it's only the second game of the season, we've got a long way to go."
Vancouver visits Portland for a Cascadia Cup clash on Saturday, March 7, then hosts Seattle in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 on Thursday, March 12.
Toronto is 0-0-2 with 0 points after a 3-2 loss at FC Dallas in the opener, and it has yet to play at home. The recent additions, Djordje Mihailovic and Zimmerman among them per MLS, did not translate into shots on this night. FC Cincinnati is next on the road.
Closing Take
Toronto showed up with a shiny new lineup and the energy of a group chat that never gets a reply. Vancouver showed up with a World Cup winner who still treats every penalty area like his living room. Sørensen already has his eyes on a bigger prize.
"We will have to keep pushing, keep pushing our level, and send a message that if we play here later in the season, we think that we have a good chance," he said.
On this evidence, the message has been sent.
