Lia Godfrey stood over the ball in the 86th minute with a chance to make it a one-goal game and turn Snapdragon Stadium into a pressure cooker. Her penalty hit the left post. That was pretty much the San Diego Wave's whole night in one kick.

Angel City FC built a two-goal lead in the first 26 minutes through Maiara Niehues and Ary Borges, spent the second half absorbing a storm, and beat its Southern California rival 2-0 on Saturday night. Angelina Anderson made six saves for her second straight clean sheet, and Angel City is now 2-0 under interim head coach Leif Smerud.

Two Goals in Nine Minutes

Angel City came out pressing. Niehues had a shot blocked in the third minute and sent a direct free kick just wide in the sixth, and San Diego's Gia Corley was booked for a bad foul in the fifth. The Wave's only first-half shot on target came in the 14th, when Anderson saved Kennedy Wesley's effort from the middle of the box.

The opener arrived in the 17th. According to Angel City, Ally Sentnor forced a turnover just outside the San Diego area, and Jun Endo lofted a cross that goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo got to but could not clear. Niehues was waiting and nodded the loose ball in from close range. The Wave's box score lists it as her fifth goal of the season.

Nine minutes later, it was 2-0. Sveindís Jónsdóttir launched a long throw, Evelyn Shores flicked it on with her head, and Borges settled it and drove a right-footed shot from the center of the box past Agudelo. Angel City said the assist was Shores' team-leading third of the season.

Smerud liked what he saw from his front line. "In the first half, we managed to press well and create some transitions with our high press," he said.

The half did come with a cost. Play stopped for Endo in the 33rd minute, and she was replaced by Taylor Suarez because of an injury in the 36th. Angel City nearly made it three anyway when Gisele Thompson volleyed a Sentnor cross from the six-yard box in the 43rd, but Agudelo kept it out. Carina Lageyre then sent a shot just over the bar off a corner in stoppage time.

All four of Angel City's shots on target came in that first half. It would not get another one.

The Second-Half Siege

San Diego came out of halftime with Lia Godfrey and Trinity Byars on for Melanie Barcenas and Ludmila, and the game flipped. Per the Wave, they held 71 percent of the ball after the break, took 12 of their 18 shots in the second half and earned all 10 of their corners after halftime.

Anderson was the wall. She got wide to stop Mimi Van Zanten from very close range in the 64th minute, then saved Kimmi Ascanio from distance in the 66th and Byars from the center of the box in the 68th. In the 78th, Byars had a shot blocked and Perle Morroni's long-range effort was tipped over. Morroni dragged another attempt wide in the 81st.

Angel City's own chances were rare. Borges fired high and wide in the 49th, Sentnor had a shot blocked in the 57th, and Thompson missed narrowly from distance in the 72nd.

Borges summed up the plan without apologizing for it. "Of course, we want to have control of the game the whole time, but we know sometimes we need to put ourselves in the back and defend," she said.

Off the Post

Then came the moment the game turned on. In the 85th minute, Borges was called for a foul on Ascanio in the box, and the Wave had a penalty. Godfrey, a rookie per the Wave, took it, and her right-footed shot struck the left post.

A goal there makes it 2-1 with stoppage time still to play and a crowd of 15,881 pushing the hosts forward. Instead, Angel City exhaled. San Diego kept coming, with Corley blocked and Morroni heading wide off a corner in added time, and Anderson got low to save Kristen McNabb's shot from the left side of the box in the third minute of stoppage time. That was the last real chance.

"[Anderson] played a really good game, and she also got the bit of luck she needed on the penalty," Smerud said. "But I think she dominated the box well."

Who Made the Difference

Angelina Anderson owned the second half: six saves, five of them after halftime, against a team that came in leading the league in shots on target, as Angel City pointed out. It was the club's third shutout of the season.

Maiara Niehues and Ary Borges gave Angel City the cushion it needed. Borges' night had a full arc: a goal, a long defensive shift and the foul that gave San Diego its penalty.

Evelyn Shores set up the second goal and helped Angel City survive 10 corners. Captain Sarah Gorden anchored a back line that finished with 36 clearances.

For San Diego, Kenza Dali created her 39th chance of the season, which the Wave said leads the NWSL. Morroni and Corley led the hosts with three shots apiece.

The Numbers Behind the Upset

  • Possession: San Diego 62.9 percent, Angel City 37.1.
  • Shots: San Diego 18, Angel City 12. On goal: 6 to 4.
  • Corners: San Diego 10, Angel City 3.
  • Clearances: Angel City 36, San Diego 12.
  • Saves: Anderson 6, Agudelo 2.

Where Both Clubs Stand

Angel City moves to six wins, one draw and six losses with 19 points. It has now won two straight, both by 2-0, following a July 3 win over the Orlando Pride, and its own recap pointed to strong form since the NWSL break. Captain Gorden credited a reset. "Over the break, we just tried to simplify everything," she said. "And [we've been] bringing this mentality of presence over perfection and trusting ourselves." Angel City also flipped the script on a 2-1 home loss to San Diego on May 9.

San Diego slips to nine wins, one draw and five losses with 28 points. The loss snapped a two-game winning run that included 2-0 wins at Chicago and over Gotham FC.

Angel City visits the Chicago Stars on Saturday, July 18. San Diego heads to the Kansas City Current a day earlier, on Friday, July 17.

Final Word

"Presence over perfection" sounds like something painted on a yoga studio wall. On Saturday, it looked like a team that knew exactly what kind of game it had to win. San Diego had the ball. Angel City had the points, a hot goalkeeper and a post that played for the visitors.
