Utah Royals Down to Nine as Angel City Cruise 3-0 and Angelina Anderson Sets Club Season Clean-Sheet Mark

Two first-half red cards left Utah with nine players, and Angel City FC took over, winning 3-0 behind Ally Sentnor, Taylor Suarez and Sveindís Jónsdóttir.

Eleven minutes in, the Utah Royals were down a player. Twenty-four minutes in, they were down two. By the end of Sunday night, they were down three goals too.

Angel City FC beat the Utah Royals 3-0 at America First Field, taking full advantage after referee Matthew Corrigan sent off Paige Cronin and Ana Tejada in the first half, both following VAR reviews. Ally Sentnor converted a penalty, Taylor Suarez scored 72 seconds after coming on at halftime, and Sveindís Jónsdóttir added a third in the 67th minute. Angelina Anderson made two saves and, per the club, set Angel City's single-season record with her eighth clean sheet.

Chaos Before Halftime

The game was barely warm when it tilted. Cronin, the Royals' captain, was whistled for a foul on Prisca Chilufya in the ninth minute, and after a VAR check the card was upgraded to red in the 11th. Utah reorganized immediately, sending on Tatumn Milazzo for Jameese Joseph, who according to the Royals was making her first start for the club.

Utah still carved out a decent chance in the 15th minute, when Narumi Miura forced Anderson into a save. Then the night went sideways again. In the 21st minute, Ary Borges drew a foul from Tejada in the box. VAR confirmed the penalty in the 23rd, and in the 24th Tejada was shown red for violent conduct. The Royals' own recap called it controversial. Either way, Utah would play the final 65-plus minutes with nine players.

Sentnor stepped up in the 26th and buried the penalty in the top left corner. Per the club, it was her fifth goal of the season and her third straight match with a converted penalty.

From there it was a siege. Carina Lageyre rattled the crossbar from outside the box in the 30th minute, Jónsdóttir fired over a minute later, and Mandy McGlynn had to dive to deny Gisele Thompson in the 45th. Per the Royals, Angel City also had a would-be second goal called back for offside shortly before halftime, and Chilufya headed just over in the ninth minute of stoppage time. With eight minutes of added time announced, Angel City kept peppering, but it was only 1-0 at the break despite 72 percent possession, according to the club.

The Turning Point: Suarez Wastes No Time

Interim head coach Leif Smerud sent Suarez on for Chilufya, who had been booked in first-half stoppage time, at the start of the second half. It took the rookie 72 seconds to justify the decision. Thompson carried the ball toward the box and slipped it to Suarez, who finished low to the bottom left corner with her left foot. That was the moment the game stopped being a contest.

The club says it was Suarez's third goal of her rookie season and her second straight match scoring shortly after coming off the bench. "[Taylor] has a very good ability to get into those situations, and from there it is about the quality of the finish," Smerud said.

Jónsdóttir put the bow on it in the 67th minute, stripping Milazzo in the Angel City attacking end, carrying into the box and finishing through the center of the goal.

Star Turns

Sveindís Jónsdóttir scored, took four shots and, per the club, reached eight goals on the season, tying Maiara Niehues (2026) and Riley Tiernan (2025) for the club's single-season scoring record. Spoiler: that tie did not last long.

Taylor Suarez played one half and still led Angel City with three shots on target. McGlynn stopped two of them, including a shot from outside the box in the 89th minute.

Angelina Anderson had a quiet night by volume but made two important saves, on Miura early and on Brecken Mozingo in the 75th minute. "I'm really proud of the accomplishment. It takes a lot to get shutouts in this league," Anderson said, crediting Emily Sams and Sarah Gorden in front of her. "It really is a team effort."

Mandy McGlynn was the best player in a Utah shirt by a mile, making seven saves and keeping the scoreline respectable while her team defended 30 clearances' worth of pressure.

Smerud kept it simple afterward. "I'm very happy with the way we pushed and pressed and worked to not give away anything," the coach said.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Angel City 74.4 percent, Utah 25.6.
  • Shots: Angel City 24, Utah 7; on target, Angel City led 10-2.
  • Passing: Angel City completed 441 passes, Utah 101.
  • Saves: McGlynn 7, Anderson 2.
  • Red cards: Utah 2, Angel City 0.

What It Means

Angel City moved to 11-6-8 with 39 points. The club said back-to-back wins lifted it into sixth place, following Wednesday's 3-1 home win over Seattle, and it was a clean bit of revenge after Utah won 1-0 in Los Angeles in May. The team's eighth clean sheet of the season is also a club record. Next up is a cross-country trip to face the Washington Spirit on Sept. 26.

Utah dropped to 13-3-9 with 42 points. The Royals came in off a 1-0 win at Houston, but there is not much tactical analysis to be done on a night spent with nine players for more than an hour. Their recap leaned on the effort, praising the group's grit in the defensive end. Utah hosts the North Carolina Courage on Sept. 27.

The interim coach's broader point was hard to argue with. "The professional job and the hard work that our players did made it clear who was winning this game," Smerud said.

Closing Take

Playing 11 against nine for most of a game is the soccer equivalent of a Mario Kart race where one player gets every star. Plenty of teams still fumble that kind of advantage. Angel City did not. It scored early, scored again right after halftime, kept its goalkeeper's record intact and left Sandy with three points and a whole lot of momentum.
