Sveindís Jónsdóttir Scores Twice as Angel City Beat Bay FC 3-1 to Stay Perfect
Sveindís Jónsdóttir scored twice and set up Gisele Thompson as Angel City FC won 3-1 at Bay FC, opening a season with back-to-back wins for the first time.

It took Sveindís Jónsdóttir three minutes to find the hole in Bay FC's back line, and she spent the rest of Saturday night treating it like her own private driveway.
The Icelandic forward scored twice and set up another as Angel City FC beat Bay FC 3-1 at PayPal Park in San Jose, in front of 10,299 fans. Gisele Thompson added a goal, Taylor Huff answered for Bay, and Angel City improved to 2-0-0 with 6 points. Per Angel City, it is the first time the club has opened a season with back-to-back wins. Bay fell to 1-0-1 in its first loss of 2026 and finished with 10 players after Huff was sent off in stoppage time.
Three Minutes to Liftoff
Bay FC barely had time to settle. In the third minute, Kennedy Fuller launched a ball from deep in her own half over the top, Jónsdóttir won the race, and her low left-footed finish slid into the bottom right corner past Jordan Silkowitz. 1-0, before the home side had completed a meaningful attack.
Bay pushed back with real energy. Brooklyn Courtnall fired wide after a corner in the 10th minute, and in the 23rd Huff's free kick hit the wall before her follow-up was gathered by Angelina Anderson. Karlie Lema sent a shot just over the bar three minutes later.
Then Angel City struck again. In the 32nd minute, Jónsdóttir carried the ball into the left channel, and once she had dragged the goalkeeper and a pair of defenders her way, she rolled it square. Thompson, steaming in from right back, finished low into the bottom right corner. Bay ended the half with a flurry, Cristiana Girelli and Lema each missing narrowly after corners and Angelina Anderson stopping a long-range drive from Joelle Anderson in the 43rd minute, but the visitors went in up 2-0.
A Header and a Reply
Bay coach Emma Coates sent on Keira Barry for Lema at halftime, and Bay won a corner early in the half. Angel City got the next goal anyway. In the 53rd minute, Evelyn Shores whipped in a corner, Jónsdóttir got there first and nodded it into the roof of the net from close range. 3-0.
Bay did not roll over. Three minutes later, Huff played a one-two with Girelli and her right-footed shot from the middle of the box went in off the post. Bay says it was Huff's first goal of the season, and Girelli, who was making her NWSL debut, picked up her first assist with her new club.
From there, Angel City managed the game. Its 12 corners kept Bay pinned, and Silkowitz had to make a close-range save on an Ary Borges header in the 81st minute. The finish got scrappy. Sarah Gorden, Sydney Collins and Huff were all booked late, and Huff took a second yellow in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
The Turning Point
Jónsdóttir's header in the 53rd minute decided it. Bay had come out of halftime with a fresh attacker and some momentum, and Huff's goal three minutes later would have made it a one-goal game and a tense final half hour. Instead, it was a consolation. Angel City's third goal turned a fight into a cushion.
Jónsdóttir's Night
Two goals, one assist, three shots and two on target. Jónsdóttir was the best player on the field by a distance, and she summed up her game like a sprinter talking about a starting gun. "It's all about timing," she said, adding, "So, it's good for me that I can be on full speed and get the ball and then I know that I can score."
Head coach Alex Straus noticed. "We need to execute like Sveindís did today," he said. Fuller was the other engine, with an assist, three shots and four fouls drawn. Thompson's goal from right back gave Angel City a different look in attack, Shores supplied the corner for the third goal, and Angelina Anderson made two saves. Angel City also says Gorden's late appearance was her 73rd match with the club, an all-time club record for games played.
For Bay, Huff scored and then saw red, a complicated night in one stat line. Girelli was lively in her debut, with three shots and the assist.

What It Means
Angel City opened with a 4-0 home rout of Chicago Stars FC and has now won a road derby to match it. Defender Emily Sams, who wore the captain's armband on Saturday, pointed to the groundwork laid under Straus. "Having Alex from preseason has been a huge step in the right direction for us," she said. Savy King also made her first start of the season against her former club, per Angel City. Next up is the Houston Dash, which also won its first two matches, at BMO Stadium on Friday, March 27.
Bay had beaten Denver Summit FC 2-1 at home on opening weekend, so this is the first real speed bump. Coates kept perspective. "Football's football," she said. "You win some, you lose some. The world keeps turning." Bay visits the North Carolina Courage on Saturday, March 28.
Closing Take
Straus framed it simply. "It's important for us in California to win those games and to give that to our fans," he said. In a rivalry built on Golden State bragging rights, Jónsdóttir basically walked into the other team's house, rearranged the furniture and left with the deed.
