Karlie Lema's First Pro Brace Powers Bay FC Past North Carolina Courage 3-0
Karlie Lema scored twice in three first-half minutes, the first brace of her pro career, and Racheal Kundananji added a goal and an assist as Bay FC beat the North Carolina Courage 3-0.

Three minutes. That is how long it took Karlie Lema to turn a sunny Saturday afternoon in San Jose into her personal highlight reel, and how long it took the North Carolina Courage to go from a competitive road trip to a damage-control mission.
Lema scored in the 14th and 17th minutes, Racheal Kundananji added a third early in the second half, and Bay FC beat the Courage 3-0 at PayPal Park in front of 12,081 fans. It was the first brace of Lema's professional career, per Bay, and the hosts' second straight clean sheet.
Woodwork, Then Fireworks
Bay was flying from the opening whistle, even if North Carolina got the first look. Ashley Sanchez had a shot blocked inside the opening minute and tested Jordan Silkowitz from distance in the second. Then Bay took over. Lema rattled the right post from outside the box in the sixth minute, with Kundananji supplying the pass, and Kailen Sheridan had to stretch to keep Alex Pfeiffer's left-footed effort out of the top right corner a minute later.
The warning shots became real ones in the 14th minute. Bay won the ball and broke, Kundananji sent Lema racing toward goal, and Lema outran her marker, got around Sheridan and squeezed a finish in from a tight angle on the right side of the six-yard box. With that goal, the club said, she tied Bay's record scoring streak by finding the net for a third straight match.
The Turning Point
North Carolina barely had time to regroup. In the 17th minute Bay broke again, Pfeiffer delivered the ball into the middle and Lema finished from the center of the box. Two fast breaks, two goals, three minutes apart, and a Courage side lined up in a five-man back line had been carved open twice by the same player.
That second goal was the moment the afternoon tilted for good. North Carolina spent the rest of the half chasing, and it showed in the offside column: the Courage were flagged five times in the match, with Sanchez and Ally Schlegel caught twice apiece. Schlegel did force Silkowitz into a close-range save in the 22nd minute, while Riley Jackson and Sanchez both missed the target in the 33rd. Bay took a 2-0 lead into halftime and could easily have had more after Pfeiffer and Lema both had looks in the 25th and 28th minutes.
Kundananji Puts It Away
The Courage made a halftime change, sending on Erica Parkinson for Feli Rauch. The club noted it was Parkinson's NWSL debut. Bay answered by finishing the job anyway.
Sheridan saved a Kennedy Fuller drive aimed at the top left corner in the 51st minute, and Pfeiffer had a shot blocked in the 53rd. A minute later Kundananji pounced on an errant back pass, per Bay, and rifled a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. It was her second goal of the season, and paired with her assist on Lema's opener, it gave her a goal and an assist on the day.
North Carolina kept pushing, and to its credit, it found some rhythm late. Parkinson fired one just wide in the 56th minute. Maycee Bell had a header blocked in the 61st, and Bay said Brooklyn Courtnall cleared the loose ball off the line with Claire Hutton shielding a defender away. Ivy Younce, one of three Courage substitutes in the 63rd minute, forced a save in the 69th. Bell headed at Silkowitz in the 82nd, and Dani Weatherholt and Bell both nodded wide from corners in the final minutes.
Star Turns
Lema was the headliner: four shots, two on target, two goals. Bay said her first-half double was the second multi-goal game in club history, after Kundananji did it at Houston on the final day of the 2024 regular season. Coincidentally, Kundananji was right in the middle of this one too, with a goal, an assist and three shots.
Pfeiffer put two of her three shots on target and set up Lema's second goal. Silkowitz made five saves, and Bay cleared the ball 33 times in front of her.
For North Carolina, Bell was the most dangerous attacker after the break, which is not something you usually say about a center back. She took four shots, all in the second half, put two on target and kept getting her head on the end of Courage deliveries. North Carolina attempted 30 crosses, though, and completed only six, which tells most of the story.
Bay head coach Emma Coates was understandably thrilled. "Really nice to get a clean sheet, three goals, a really solid performance," she said. "I thought the first half in particular, I thought we were outstanding."
Stats That Matter

- Offsides: North Carolina 5, Bay 1.
What It Means
Bay improves to 5-3-6 with 18 points and is now unbeaten in three matches, with back-to-back shutout wins after a 2-0 result at Racing Louisville. The club said it was its fourth clean sheet of the season and its first set of consecutive shutout wins since June 2024. "So two games on the bounce, two clean sheets. We're very happy," Coates said. Bay visits the Houston Dash on Friday, July 24, then hosts Gotham FC on Wednesday, July 29.
North Carolina falls to 6-3-5 with 21 points after a second straight loss without scoring, following a 2-0 home defeat to the Washington Spirit the week before. Bay has now beaten the Courage twice this season, after a 3-1 win in North Carolina in March. The Courage head home to host the Utah Royals on Saturday, July 25.
Closing Take
Some breakouts build slowly. Lema's arrived like a surprise album drop: no warning, two bangers back to back, and everyone scrambling to catch up. Bay looks like it has found a formula: fast and ruthless on the break, stubborn at the back. Two straight shutout wins suggest it is more than a one-week fling.
