Fourteen minutes. That is all Bay FC needed on Saturday night in Cary to turn a tight road game into a rout, and roughly how long it took the North Carolina Courage to go from unbeaten to unrecognizable.

Alex Pfeiffer, Keira Barry and Dorian Bailey scored between the 20th and 34th minutes, and Bay FC beat the Courage 3-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park in front of 7,013 fans. Manaka Matsukubo pulled one back in the 65th minute, but the hole was far too deep. Bay moved to 2-0-1 with 6 points, while North Carolina slipped to 1-1-1 and took its first loss of the season.

A Shaky Start, Then a Flood

The night did not begin smoothly for the visitors. Defender Joelle Anderson went down early, play stopped in the sixth minute, and Brooklyn Courtnall replaced her in the 10th. Losing a center back that early can knock a back line sideways. Bay barely blinked.

In the 20th minute, Bay swung the ball out to the right, Sydney Collins fed Pfeiffer, and the forward cut onto her left foot and beat Kailen Sheridan from the right side of the box, low into the bottom right corner. 1-0. Five minutes later, a VAR review of a possible Courage penalty ended with no call, an early hint that the breaks were not going North Carolina's way.

Then the floodgates. In the 30th minute, Bay broke in transition and Cristiana Girelli slid a pass into the middle for Barry, whose right-footed finish from the center of the box tucked into the bottom left corner. Four minutes later Pfeiffer turned provider, and Bailey rose in the center of the box to head her delivery into the bottom right corner. Three goals, three scorers, 14 minutes. Somebody check on the Courage group chat.

North Carolina had a couple of looks before the break, including a Maycee Bell header from very close range in the 32nd minute and an Evelyn Ijeh header in the 44th, but both sailed over. The home side went to the bench early, sending Matsukubo on for Sydney Schmidt in the 41st minute. The first half then ran nine minutes of added time, much of it eaten by stoppages, and Bay walked off up 3-0.

Matsukubo Brings the Fight

North Carolina came out of halftime like a team that had been yelled at in the productive way. Matsukubo missed to the left in the 46th and 49th minutes, had a shot blocked in the 54th, and Ryan Williams fired over in the 55th.

The pressure finally paid off in the 65th minute. Williams pulled the ball back and Matsukubo finished with her left foot from the center of the box. 3-1, and suddenly the crowd in Cary had something to get loud about.

Bay nearly answered right away. Karlie Lema forced Sheridan into a save in the 68th minute and then rattled the right post in the 71st, with Collins seeing two follow-up efforts blocked and saved in the same scramble. The Courage's best shot at making it truly nervy came in the 83rd minute, when Hannah Betfort's header from the center of the box went straight at Jordan Silkowitz. Matsukubo's last swing, off a corner in the 90th minute, flew over the bar.

First Goals, First Starts, First Assists

Pfeiffer was the best player on the field during the half hour that decided this match. She scored, assisted and put both of her shots on target before Lema replaced her in the 56th minute. Per Bay FC, the goal was her second in three games to open the season.

Barry's goal was the first of her NWSL career, and the club noted it came on a night when she and Anouk Denton made the first NWSL starts of their careers. Bailey's header came in her season debut. Collins, wearing the armband, picked up the first assist of her professional career on the opener, and Girelli logged her second assist in as many matches, according to the club.

On the other side, Matsukubo did everything one player can do off the bench. She took six shots, scored the Courage's only goal and, per North Carolina, made her 50th NWSL regular season appearance in her first appearance of the season. The Courage also pointed out that Schmidt became the youngest player to start a match for the club, a nice footnote on a night that offered few.

The Turning Point

The 30th minute flipped everything. At 1-0, North Carolina still had a home crowd ready to drag it back into the match. Barry's goal on the break doubled the lead and opened the game up, and four minutes later Bailey's header made it a three-goal game before the Courage could regroup.

Per Bay FC, the three-goal first half marked the first time the club had scored three goals in a match since its inaugural 2024 campaign.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Bay 6, North Carolina 2. The Courage actually outshot Bay 13-12 but tested Silkowitz only twice.
  • Possession: North Carolina 51.1 percent, Bay 48.9 percent. Basically a coin flip, which puts this result squarely on finishing.
  • Interceptions: Bay 21, North Carolina 14. The visitors' best attacking moments started with winning the ball back.
  • Saves: Sheridan made three, Silkowitz one.

What It Means

This was Bay's first road match of the season, and it now has two wins from its first three games after beating Denver Summit FC 2-1 at home and losing 3-1 to Angel City FC. Six points from three matches is a strong early return, and this one came despite a reshuffled back line after Anderson's early exit.

North Carolina opened with a 2-1 win over Racing Louisville FC and a 0-0 draw at Gotham FC, so a 1-1-1 record with 4 points is no crisis. The worry is the first half. Conceding three times in 14 minutes at home is the kind of lapse that costs points in a tight league, and the Courage host the Portland Thorns next. Bay returns home to face the Washington Spirit.

Closing Take

Bay played the first half like a heist movie: in and out with the loot before anyone in the building knew what had happened. The second half was more getaway driver, a little nervy and checking the mirrors, but still home free.

Bay FC head coach Emma Coates put it plainly afterward. "Particularly the manner of the performance in the first half and the resilience we showed at the end of the game," she said. "Just a really pleasing three points and still lots for us to work on and build on."

Both parts of that are true. The heist was clean. The getaway needs work.
