Gift Monday Seals Washington Spirit's First Win of 2026, 2-0 at Bay FC
A Bay FC own goal and a late strike from substitute Gift Monday gave the Washington Spirit a 2-0 win in San Jose, their first victory of 2026, despite nine Jordan Silkowitz saves.

Five matches into the season, the Washington Spirit finally have a win, and it took a bizarre own goal and a quick strike from substitute Gift Monday to get it.
The Spirit beat Bay FC 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at PayPal Park in San Jose, breaking the deadlock in the 57th minute when a Bay clearance ricocheted into its own net off Brooklyn Courtnall, then sealing it when Monday scored two minutes after coming off the bench. Washington outshot Bay 20-6 and put 10 shots on target, and only a career day from Jordan Silkowitz kept the score that close.
Silkowitz Holds the Line
Washington controlled the first half almost from the opening whistle. In the 12th minute, Rosemonde Kouassi worked her way down the right and found Leicy Santos, who sent a left-footed shot just wide. The Spirit kept Bay pinned in its own third for long stretches, winning a string of corners and piling up attempts.
Silkowitz was up to it. She saved a Trinity Rodman shot from the left side of the box in the 25th minute, stopped Hal Hershfelt from distance four minutes later and turned away Sofia Cantore in the 30th. Bay's best look of the half came in the 14th minute, when Alex Pfeiffer pulled a shot wide from the middle of the box.
The half ended on an uneasy note for Washington. Tara Rudd and Lucia Di Guglielmo collided while trying to clear a long ball, causing a lengthy stoppage. Di Guglielmo was replaced by Paige Metayer in stoppage time, while Rudd stayed in the match, per the Spirit. Eight minutes were added, and Rebeca Bernal had two attempts blocked late in that added time. Scoreless at the break.
An Own Goal Opens the Door
The Spirit sent on Claudia Martínez for Cantore at halftime and came out pushing. In the 50th minute, Silkowitz saved a Rudd header from a difficult angle and then another header from Hershfelt in quick succession. Rudd headed just over the bar off a Rodman corner in the 53rd.
The breakthrough, when it came, was ugly. In the 57th minute, Bay FC's account has Silkowitz rushing out to deal with a loose ball under pressure from Metayer, only for her clearance to rebound off a teammate and over the line. ESPN credited the own goal to Courtnall. Brutal luck for a goalkeeper having an excellent day.
Bay nearly answered immediately. Taylor Huff sent a shot just past the top right corner in the 61st minute, and Pfeiffer broke into the box a minute later only for Sandy MacIver to make the save, the only one she needed all afternoon.
Silkowitz kept Bay alive with two more stops on Santos in the 68th and 70th minutes, and Santos headed wide in the 71st. Bay pushed for a leveler, sending on Karlie Lema and Maddie Moreau in the 71st minute. Caroline Conti, an hour-mark substitute, headed wide off a Sydney Collins cross in the 81st, and Dorian Bailey, on for Hannah Bebar, sent a shot from outside the box just wide in the 85th. Washington, meanwhile, had gone to its bench. Monday replaced Santos in the 84th minute, and two minutes later, after Silkowitz saved a Rodman shot from the center of the box, Monday pounced on the loose ball and fired a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner from the right side of the six-yard box. 2-0.
Monday's Impact, Silkowitz's Career Day
Monday played roughly 10 minutes plus stoppage time and still finished with two shots, both on target, and the goal. Silkowitz denied her a second from very close range in the fourth minute of added time. The Spirit say the goal was Monday's 12th since joining the club.
Silkowitz deserved a better result. Her nine saves were a career high, according to Bay FC, and several came on headers or shots from inside the box. Without her, this is a rout.
For Washington, Santos was the most active attacker with five shots, two on target, while Rodman added four shots with two on target. MacIver needed just one save to collect her second straight clean sheet, per the Spirit, and Rudd shook off the first-half collision to play the full 90 and land a shot on target of her own.
The Turning Point
The 57th-minute own goal. Washington had spent nearly an hour knocking on the door, hitting the target repeatedly and finding Silkowitz every time. Bay looked capable of stealing a point if it could survive, and the Spirit's 373 completed passes to Bay's 210 had not yet produced a single goal. Then one awkward clearance changed the entire afternoon, and Bay had to chase a game it had barely been in with the ball.

What It Means
Washington improves to 1-3-1 with six points after a season-opening loss to Portland and three straight draws, at Louisville, at home against Utah and at Denver. The Spirit now head into the international break with two straight shutouts. Next up, per the club, is a home match against the Kansas City Current at Audi Field on Friday, April 24.
Bay falls to 2-0-2 with six points. The club alternated results through its first four matches, beating Denver at home and North Carolina on the road while losing at home to Angel City FC and now Washington. Bay hosts Ottawa Rapid FC in an international friendly on April 17, according to the club, before its next league match at Gotham FC on April 25.
Closing Take
Washington's first win of 2026 will not end up on anyone's highlight reel, unless the reel is about goalkeepers getting robbed by physics. But after four games without a victory, the Spirit will take a scrappy one. Sometimes the season starts with a masterpiece. Sometimes it starts with a ricochet and a substitute who needed just two minutes.
