Claire Hutton Scores and Assists, but Boston Legacy Rally for 2-2 Draw With Bay FC
Bay FC led 2-0 after 17 minutes behind Claire Hutton and Karlie Lema, but Amanda Gutierres and an Aïssata Traoré penalty earned Boston Legacy FC a 2-2 draw in Pawtucket.

Seventeen minutes into its first match back from the NWSL's summer break, Bay FC looked like it had spent the time off rewriting its entire season. Claire Hutton had a goal, Karlie Lema had a goal, Hutton had set Lema up, and Boston Legacy FC had yet to register a shot.
Then the match got weird. Amanda Gutierres headed one in during first-half stoppage time, Aïssata Traoré converted a penalty in the 79th minute, and the two clubs walked off at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, with a 2-2 draw on Sunday. Boston will call it a comeback. Bay will call it a leak. Both are right.
Seventeen Minutes of Bay FC Bliss
Bay came out sprinting. Racheal Kundananji forced Casey Murphy into a save in the second minute and had another shot blocked in the third. Moments later, Alex Pfeiffer, back in the lineup for the first time since April 5 according to Bay, drew a foul from Murphy in the box. Penalty, and a yellow card for the Boston goalkeeper.
Hutton stepped up in the fifth minute and slotted it into the bottom left corner. Bay said it was her first career NWSL goal. She was not finished. In the 17th minute, Hutton slipped a through ball to Lema on the right, and Lema beat Murphy from a difficult angle at the near post, tucking it into the bottom right corner. Per Bay, it was Lema's first goal of 2026. It also came in the club debut of new midfielder Kennedy Fuller.
At 2-0, with Boston also picking up an early yellow for Jorelyn Carabalí, this had the look of a rout.
Boston Finds a Pulse
It did not become one. Boston's own recap pointed to Alba Caño as the player who pulled the Legacy into the game, and the midfielder kept probing from the middle while the chances started to stack up.
In the 36th minute, Nichelle Prince missed to the left and then set up Traoré for a shot from very close range that Jordan Silkowitz saved. Traoré headed a Caño corner high and wide in the 38th, then forced Silkowitz into another save with a header off a Carabalí cross in the 40th. Bay's best reply was a Pfeiffer shot from the center of the box that Murphy saved at the top left corner in the 42nd. Then came a frantic two-minute burst in which Barbara Olivieri, Caño and Gutierres all had shots blocked.
The Header Before the Whistle
The goal that changed the afternoon arrived in the second minute of stoppage time. Prince curled in a cross from the right, and Gutierres headed it in from very close range. Instead of a two-goal cushion and a calm halftime talk, Bay went into the locker room at 2-1 with Boston buzzing.
Bay coach Emma Coates saw it the same way.
"I think the thing that Boston do really well is they frustrate you and get you in a state, and the game tipped into a state of chaos," Coates said.
The second half bore that out. Coates made a double change in the 52nd minute, sending on Cristiana Girelli for Kundananji and Keira Barry for Pfeiffer, and Girelli nearly made an instant impact, forcing Murphy into a save in the 55th before steering a Barry cross wide in the 59th. Gutierres answered with a long-range effort that Silkowitz handled in the 57th.
Boston brought on Sammy Smith and Ella Stevens in the 65th. Smith tested Silkowitz from the right side of the box four minutes later, and Silkowitz got down to save it at the bottom left corner. Bay lost Lema in the 76th minute, when Onyeka Gamero replaced her because of an injury, according to ESPN's match data.
In the 77th, Sydney Collins was penalized for a foul on Traoré in the box. Traoré drilled the penalty down the middle in the 79th, and the match was level.
No One Blinks
Bay pushed for a winner. Caroline Conti forced Murphy into a save in the 82nd minute, and Fuller sent a shot wide from outside the box in the 84th. Boston nearly stole it at the other end when Caño's shot from distance forced Silkowitz into a save in the 85th.
Ten minutes of stoppage time followed. Traoré had a shot from a tight angle saved and two more blocked in a chaotic stretch around the fifth and sixth added minutes. Gamero missed to the right in the third and had her last effort saved by Murphy in the ninth. Neither side found the knockout.
The Players Who Shaped It
Claire Hutton delivered a goal and an assist inside the opening 17 minutes, and Bay noted it was also her first assist with the club. She was the best player on the field for the first half hour.
Aïssata Traoré was Boston's battering ram: seven shots, four on target, and the penalty she both drew and buried.
Jordan Silkowitz made six saves, three of them on Traoré, to keep Bay in front for most of the afternoon.
Casey Murphy also made six saves for Boston, recovering from the early penalty she conceded.
Amanda Gutierres scored with one of her two shots on target before Fauzia Najjemba replaced her in the 77th minute.
The Numbers Behind the Draw
- Shots: Boston 18, Bay 13.
- Shots on goal: Boston 8, Bay 7.
- Saves: Silkowitz 6, Murphy 6.
- Possession: Boston 55.2 percent.
- Crosses: Boston attempted 22 and completed seven; Bay completed one of 15.
What It Means for Both Clubs
Bay moves to three wins, three draws and six losses with 12 points. The point ended a three-game losing run that covered a 2-0 loss at Portland on May 20, a 1-0 home loss to Chicago on May 24 and a 3-1 loss at Orlando on May 29. Next up is a Friday trip to Racing Louisville FC on July 10.
Boston, which its own site notes is playing its inaugural season, moves to two wins, four draws and seven losses with 10 points. The draw ended a two-match losing skid after defeats to Seattle Reign FC and Kansas City. It was the second draw between the sides this season, after a 1-1 result in May. The Legacy host Chicago Stars FC on Friday, July 10.
Chaos Theory
The second half was Everything Everywhere All at Once: substitutes flying on, injury stoppages, a drinks break, a penalty and ten minutes of stoppage time. Boston thrives in that environment. Bay, by its own coach's admission, could not climb out of it. A two-goal lead after 17 minutes should have been a win. Instead, Bay got a point and a lesson about what happens when you let a scrappy expansion side believe.
