Aleigh Gambone had been on the field for 16 minutes when Nicki Hernández looked up near the left touchline and lofted a cross toward the far post. Nobody in a Utah shirt picked up Gambone. She launched herself at it and headed it into the bottom right corner, and a Boston Legacy FC team that had lost four straight suddenly had a road win in its pocket.

Boston beat the Utah Royals 2-1 on Friday night at America First Field in Sandy. Aïssata Traoré put the Legacy ahead in the 10th minute, Kiana Palacios answered seven minutes later off a long ball from her own goalkeeper, and then the Legacy's bench did what it has done all season. Gambone's 86th-minute winner stunned a Utah side that its own recap listed third in the NWSL.

A Fast and Frantic Opening

Utah came out pressing, and Cece Delzer forced Laurel Ivory into a save inside six minutes before blazing another effort high and wide. Boston found its feet quickly. In the 10th minute Barbara Olivieri's shot was blocked, and per Utah it came off Kate Del Fava onto the left post. Traoré was first to the rebound and slotted a left-footed finish from the middle of the box.

The lead lasted seven minutes. Mandy McGlynn sent a long ball from the top of her own area that dropped perfectly for a sprinting Palacios. Palacios took it from the right side of the box and finished low into the far corner. Utah said it was Palacios' fourth goal of the season and McGlynn's second assist in a Royals uniform, and that McGlynn had joined Kailen Sheridan as the only goalkeepers with two assists this NWSL season. A goalkeeper assist is the soccer equivalent of the drummer taking a guitar solo, and McGlynn has now done it twice.

The rest of the half was a scrap. Delzer had two more attempts in the 20th minute, Deja Davis headed over off a corner in the 31st, and Ivory saved a Cloé Lacasse shot in the 41st. Just before the whistle, Palacios cracked a shot from outside the box off the crossbar.

McGlynn Keeps the Door Shut

Boston brought on Amanda Allen for Sammy Smith at halftime, and the Legacy took over the shooting. McGlynn stopped Hernández in the 47th minute, Sarah Schupansky in the 51st and Allen in the 55th. Davis put another header just wide in the 65th, and Gambone came on for Schupansky in the 70th.

Annie Karich was booked for Boston in the 75th minute, and Utah kept pushing: Delzer had a shot blocked in the 82nd, and Del Fava headed over off a corner a minute later. Boston then sent on Amanda Gutierres and Josefine Hasbo in the 84th.

The Turning Point

The 86th minute flipped the night. McGlynn first saved Gutierres from the center of the box after a Hasbo pass, and moments later Hernández sent in the cross that found Gambone unmarked at the back post. Her diving header gave Boston the lead with four minutes left. The Legacy said it was their 11th goal in the last 15 minutes of the second half, and that their eight goals from substitutes lead the league.

Paige Cronin was booked for Utah in the 88th minute, and Boston managed two minutes of stoppage time without real trouble.

Who Made the Difference

Gambone took one shot and scored with it. Traoré finished with two shots and the opener, and Hernández added a shot on target to her assist. Ivory made two saves, including the early stop on Delzer that kept the Royals from setting the tone.

Boston's bench was the story within the story. Allen tested McGlynn 10 minutes after coming on, Gambone set up an Alba Caño attempt in the 78th minute before scoring herself, Hasbo teed up the Gutierres chance that came right before the winner, and Gutierres put her only shot on target. Four substitutes, four meaningful contributions.

McGlynn was the best player on the losing side by a distance: five saves plus the assist. Palacios scored and hit the bar, and Delzer led all players with five shots, though only one tested Ivory. Del Fava also reached a personal landmark, per Utah, playing her 7,200th consecutive minute to move past Katie Atkinson into second place on the league's all-time list for that streak, behind Kaleigh Kurtz's active run. Mina Tanaka made her 50th appearance for the Royals. The bigger concern for Utah was the finishing: Palacios, Lacasse and Delzer combined for eight shots, and only three of them hit the target.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Boston led 14 to 9, and 7 to 3 on target.
  • Saves: McGlynn made five; Ivory made two.
  • Possession: Boston held 51.7 percent.
  • Corners: Utah earned five to Boston's three.
  • Fouls: A tidy 10 apiece.

What It Means

Boston improved to 6-5-12 (wins, draws, losses) with 23 points, snapping a four-match losing run that had included a 5-2 home loss to Angel City FC on Monday. The club called it its second road win of the season, and it avenged a 2-1 home defeat to Utah in March during the Legacy's inaugural campaign. Next up is a trip to the Washington Spirit on Sept. 13.

Utah dropped to 12-3-8 with 39 points. The Royals arrived off a 2-1 comeback win at Orlando, and Utah noted this was the first time since a July 29 defeat to Washington that they had lost a home match. Houston is next, on the road on Sept. 12.

Closing Take

Boston has turned the final 15 minutes into its own genre, a late-night sequel that keeps getting greenlit. Utah controlled long stretches, got a goal created by its goalkeeper and hit the woodwork, and still walked off with nothing. For a first-year club, that kind of late-game punch is a real identity. Boston did not need a speech after this one. The scoreboard, and Gambone's diving header, said enough.
