Casey Murphy's Assist and Six Saves Earn Boston Legacy 1-1 Draw at Denver Summit
Goalkeeper Casey Murphy set up Sammy Smith's opener and made six saves, but Janine Sonis converted a 72nd-minute penalty as Denver Summit FC and Boston Legacy FC drew 1-1.

Casey Murphy spent most of Sunday night at Centennial Stadium doing a goalkeeper's job. For one sequence in the 34th minute, she did a playmaker's job too, and it nearly stole Boston Legacy FC three points.
Murphy saved a Denver header and, moments later, launched the long ball that Sammy Smith turned into the opening goal, and Boston held that lead until Janine Sonis converted a 72nd-minute penalty. Denver Summit FC and Boston drew 1-1 in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,380, the two expansion sides splitting the points and staying level on 20.
Denver Leans on the Door
The Summit owned the early exchanges and took aim at Murphy almost immediately. Melissa Kössler sent a shot high and wide in the sixth minute, and in the 17th Ayo Oke had one effort blocked before Murphy smothered her follow-up from the left side of the six-yard box, a scramble Boston's recap called a gritty save.
Denver kept coming. Sonis forced a save from distance in the 24th, Yazmeen Ryan blasted the ensuing corner chance over, and Kössler met a Lindsey Heaps cross in the 27th only for Murphy to tip it away from the top left corner. Boston's best moment in that spell came in the ninth minute, when Aleigh Gambone stripped a Denver defender and fired just wide of the right post.
Murphy's Two-Way Minute
Then came the sequence that defined Boston's night. In the 34th minute, Ryan crossed and Delanie Sheehan headed toward the bottom left corner. Murphy got there. Moments later Boston broke the other way, and Murphy's long pass dropped beyond Denver's last defender for Smith, who slid a left-footed finish through the legs of Denver goalkeeper Abby Smith and into the bottom left corner.
The goal survived a VAR check, which Denver's recap said was for a possible offside. And Boston added a stat that should be framed in the locker room: Murphy's assist was just the fourth time in league history that a goalkeeper has recorded one in the regular season. Save at one end, assist at the other. That's the kind of minute that gets a keeper's name chanted on a podcast for a week.
Denver almost answered before the break, but Kössler headed a Sonis delivery high and wide in the 42nd. Boston went into halftime up 1-0 on one shot on target, which is efficiency so extreme it borders on rude.
The Turning Point
Ryan forced Murphy into another save in the 52nd and Heaps had a shot blocked in the 56th. Two minutes later Denver coach Nick Cushing went to his bench, sending on Natasha Flint and Olivia Thomas for Kössler and Oke, and the move paid off inside 15 minutes. In the 70th minute Flint was fouled in the box by Jorelyn Carabalí, and the referee pointed to the spot.
Sonis stepped up in the 72nd and drove a right-footed penalty into the top right corner. It was the only shot of the night Murphy could not keep out.
Boston responded by sending on Amanda Gutierres for Gambone a minute later. Gambone had nearly doubled the lead in the 66th, but Abby Smith saved her header from the center of the box, Denver's goalkeeper's only save of the night. It was a big one.
The Final Push
The closing stretch was all Denver, at least in terms of territory. Thomas headed a Flint corner delivery over the bar in the 80th, and Flint's shot from outside the box in the 88th was saved by Murphy, her sixth stop of the game. Boston answered with three substitutions in the 90th minute and one more in stoppage time, when Deja Davis came on for Carabalí to make what Boston said was her Legacy debut. The visitors earned a corner in the final minute of added time, but it came to nothing, and the teams settled for a share.
Stars of the Night
Casey Murphy was the best player on the field and it wasn't especially close: six saves, one historic assist, and a long list of Denver shooters who will see her gloves in their sleep.
Janine Sonis put both of her shots on target and scored the equalizer from the spot, and she was also involved in the build-up, supplying the cross for Oke's early chance.
Sammy Smith made her one real look count, scoring on one of her two shots before giving way to Josefine Hasbo late.
Yazmeen Ryan was Denver's creative hub, setting up three chances and taking two shots of her own. Denver's recap highlighted her orchestration, and the play-by-play backs it up.
Lindsey Heaps set up two Denver chances from her attacking midfield role, including Kössler's header in the 27th.
Stats That Matter

- Shots on target: Denver 7, Boston 2.
- Saves: Murphy 6, Abby Smith 1.
- Crosses: Denver attempted 22 and completed 8; Boston completed none of its 11.

What It Means
Denver moves to 5-5-6 with 20 points and is now winless in two since a 2-1 victory over Portland on July 18, following a 1-0 loss at Washington. Denver's own recap conceded that the Summit let two points get away at home despite controlling long stretches, which is about as honest as club media gets. The Summit stay at Centennial Stadium to host the North Carolina Courage on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Boston moves to 5-5-8 with 20 points and has three wins, a draw and a loss in its last five matches, a run that began with a 2-0 win over Chicago on July 10 and includes a 1-0 home win over Kansas City last time out. The Legacy also won the first meeting with Denver 3-2 on May 3, Boston's first win of the season, so the season series tilts their way. Next up is a home date with the Portland Thorns on Aug. 9.
Closing Take
Goalkeepers are supposed to be the last line of defense, not the first line of attack. Murphy played both roles in a single minute and turned a road game Boston was getting outplayed in into a perfectly respectable point. Think of it as a hockey goalie scoring into an empty net: rare, a little ridiculous, and the only highlight anyone at Centennial will be texting their friends about.
