Denver Summit FC had gone three weeks without a home match. It came back to Centennial Stadium on Saturday night and threw a party that the Chicago Stars will be trying to forget for a while.

Denver won 6-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 12,372, the club's sixth sellout of the season. Melissa Kössler scored twice, Janine Sonis, Yuzuki Yamamoto, Natasha Flint and Olivia Thomas added one each, and the Summit set a club record for goals in a single game. Denver also said it became the first team in the league to score six in a match this season.

The Captains Set the Tone

It took 13 minutes. Yamamoto teed up Sonis in the middle of the box, and the co-captain finished with her right foot into the bottom right corner. Denver said it was Sonis' ninth goal of the campaign, which for a defender listed at left back is an absurd number.

Six minutes later it was 2-0. Lindsey Heaps, wearing the armband in her return to the lineup after missing three matches, whipped a cross into the six-yard box and Kössler headed it in from point-blank range. The Summit noted it was Kössler's fifth goal of the year and her first since April 25 against San Diego.

The rest of the half was Denver keeping the ball and Chicago trying to survive. Kössler and Heaps both missed the target from good positions, Leila Ouahabi was booked for Chicago in the 41st minute, and Micayla Johnson's long-range effort just before the break was Chicago's only attempt of the half.

Somewhere in there, Sonis also hit a milestone. Per Denver, she became the 94th player in league history to reach 10,000 regular-season minutes when the clock passed 37.

Eleven Minutes of Chaos

Both coaches made a change at halftime. Flint replaced Heaps for Denver, and Julia Grosso came on for Manaka Hayashi for Chicago. Both substitutes were on the scoresheet within 11 minutes.

Flint went first, setting up Yamamoto in the 47th minute. Yamamoto finished into the bottom left corner from the middle of the box for her first career NWSL goal. Chicago hit back in the 53rd: Johnson had one shot blocked and then hit the left post, and Grosso pounced on the rebound to make it 3-1. The Stars said it was Grosso's second goal off the bench in as many matches.

Any thought of a comeback lasted about three minutes. Flint fired a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner in the 56th minute, her fifth of the season per Denver, and two minutes after that Ayo Oke crossed for Kössler, who finished from the right side of the six-yard box to complete her brace.

The Turning Point

Grosso's goal was Chicago's opening, and Denver slammed it shut immediately. Two goals in five minutes turned a 3-1 game into 5-1 and ended the competitive portion of the evening. Everything after that was about records.

Denver kept coming. Yazmeen Ryan headed a Yamamoto cross off the crossbar in the 72nd minute, and the Summit sent on Olivia Thomas and Carson Pickett a minute later. In the 85th minute Devin Lynch led a fast break and fed Thomas, who finished into the bottom left corner for her first career goal. Denver said it was also Lynch's first assist of the campaign. Pickett forced a late save from Katie Atkinson, and Sonis just missed a seventh.

Stars of the Show

Kössler was the headliner with five shots, two goals and a hand in the build-up to the first-half chances. Per Denver, she joined Sonis as the only Summit players with a multi-goal match this season.

Yamamoto and Flint both scored and assisted, and Denver said Yamamoto became only the third player in club history to log a goal and an assist in the same match, after Sonis and Flint. Heaps delivered an assist in 45 minutes, and Sonis scored from left back. In all, eight Denver players were involved in goals.

For Chicago, Grosso's goal came in her 50th regular-season NWSL appearance, all of them with the Stars, according to the club. Maitane made her 50th regular-season start, and Simone Charley made her first appearance since signing with Chicago on Aug. 13, coming on for the injured Jameese Joseph in the 79th minute. Atkinson made two saves and was left exposed far too often.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Denver 18, Chicago 6.
  • On target: Denver 7, Chicago 1, and the one went in.
  • Possession: Denver held 61.7 percent, which the club called its second-highest share of the season.
  • Crosses: Denver attempted 26 to Chicago's seven.
  • Passes: Denver attempted 490 to Chicago's 309.

What It Means

Denver improved to 7-6-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 27 points, bouncing back from a 1-0 loss at Portland the previous week. The club said the last time any NWSL team had scored six in a match was Oct. 18, 2025, when San Diego did it against Chicago. Next up for Denver, in its first NWSL season, is a home date with Gotham FC on Sept. 6.

Chicago fell to 5-1-16 with 16 points. The Stars had beaten Racing Louisville FC 3-2 in their previous match, but this was their second defeat by five or more goals in 10 days after a 5-0 loss at Houston. Chicago hosts the North Carolina Courage on Sept. 6.

Closing Take

This was an Avengers: Endgame portal scene, everyone showing up at once: a defender scoring, a rookie scoring, a returning captain assisting and the bench chipping in with two goals and two assists. Chicago had one shot on target and somehow scored with it, which was about the only thing that went right. Denver has been waiting all season for a night when everything clicked. On Saturday, it all clicked, six times.
