Denver Summit Outlast Rain Delay and Seattle Reign as Natasha Flint, Delanie Sheehan Score in 2-1 Win
Delanie Sheehan and Natasha Flint scored on either side of halftime as Denver Summit FC beat Seattle Reign FC 2-1 after a rain delay at sold-out Centennial Stadium.

The sky over Centennial Stadium made everyone wait. Denver Summit FC made it worth the wait.
After a rain delay of more than an hour, Delanie Sheehan curled in the opener on the stroke of halftime, Natasha Flint doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, and Denver held off Seattle Reign FC 2-1 on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,272. Brittany Ratcliffe pulled one back a minute after coming off the bench, but the Summit, who peppered Claudia Dickey with 16 shots, never looked like giving this one away.
Denver Owns the First Half
Once the weather cleared, the hosts played like a team that had spent the delay watching film. Flint was the focal point from the start, forcing Dickey into a save from the middle of the box in the 15th minute and then heading a Janine Sonis cross straight at her four minutes later. Sonis tested Dickey from distance in the 29th, Flint dragged a shot wide in the 35th, and Yazmeen Ryan just missed the top right corner off a Lindsey Heaps headed pass after a corner in the 37th.
Seattle, meanwhile, barely got a look. The Reign's only shot of the half came in the 25th minute, when Maddie Dahlien drove into the box and Abby Smith had it covered. Denver said holding Seattle to one shot tied the club's fewest allowed in any half this season.
The breakthrough came in the 44th minute. Heaps slipped a short pass to Sheehan on the right side of the box, and Sheehan bent a right-footed finish into the top left corner. It was her second goal of the season and her first since she scored at Houston on May 9, per Denver. The assist also gave Heaps a goal contribution in three consecutive matches, the club noted. Sofia Huerta's yellow card in stoppage time was the only other thing Seattle took into the locker room.
Flint Strikes, Ratcliffe Answers
Denver did not ease in after the break. In the 50th minute, Sonis carried the ball forward and fed Flint inside the box, and the striker finished into the center of the goal for her sixth of the season, according to the club.
Seattle coach Laura Harvey responded in the 54th minute, sending on Maddie Mercado for Mia Fishel and Ratcliffe for Nérilia Mondésir. Ratcliffe needed about 60 seconds to make that look smart. In the 55th minute, she finished from the middle of the box to make it 2-1. The Reign said it was her fourth goal of the season and the seventh substitute goal of her career, and that it stretched the club's record run of regular-season matches with a goal to 16 straight, third-longest in NWSL history.
For a stretch, Seattle had life. Dahlien forced another save in the 62nd minute, and in the 66th Sally Menti had a shot blocked before Ryanne Brown sent a header wide. But the frustration was starting to show. Menti was booked in the 73rd minute and Phoebe McClernon a minute later.
Then it was Dickey against the Summit. She saved a Heaps header in the 70th, another Heaps effort in the 78th, a close-range Flint shot in the 83rd and a Flint strike aimed at the top of the goal in the 87th. Seattle's last real chances came at the 90-minute mark, when Smith saved Sam Meza's shot to the top left corner and Mercado fired narrowly wide.
The Turning Point
Flint's goal in the 50th minute. Seattle had been stuck at one shot all night, and the halftime reset was its chance to change the script. Instead, Denver doubled the lead before Harvey could even make a change. When Ratcliffe struck five minutes later, it cut the gap to one rather than tying the match, and that cushion was the difference between a Denver win and a Seattle comeback story.
Flint's Night, Dickey's Fight
Flint was a one-woman siege engine: seven shots, six on target, one goal. The club said she now has 10 goal contributions this season, six goals and four assists, behind only Sonis and Ryan on the roster. Without Dickey, this is a rout.
Sonis was everywhere. She assisted the second goal, put a shot on target and supplied crosses for two Heaps headers, and Denver noted she sits fourth in the NWSL Golden Boot race with 11 goals to go with five assists. Heaps, the captain, added an assist and two shots on target from midfield.
For Seattle, Dickey was the reason the score stayed close, finishing with eight saves. Ratcliffe did what supersubs do, and Dahlien was the Reign's most dangerous starter with both of her shots on target. Smith made three saves at the other end, enough on a night when Seattle created so little.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Denver 16, Seattle 8. On target: Denver 10, Seattle 4.
- Saves: Dickey 8, Smith 3.
- First-half shots: Seattle had just one, a Dahlien attempt in the 25th minute.
- Corners: Denver 5, Seattle 0.
- Discipline: Seattle collected three yellow cards to Denver's one and was caught offside four times.
What It Means
Denver moved to 9-8-8 with 35 points. According to the club, that put Denver within one point of ninth-place Angel City FC and two points behind eighth-place Seattle, just below the playoff line. The Summit are unbeaten in five, with wins over the Chicago Stars, Gotham FC and Seattle around draws with Angel City and Bay FC, and the club said its home unbeaten run also reached five matches, dating to Aug. 8. Denver has scored 25 goals at home, trailing only North Carolina's 26 and Kansas City's 28, per the club. Next up is a trip to the Kansas City Current on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Seattle fell to 11-4-10 with 37 points and lost back-to-back matches after a three-game winning streak, both on the road in a three-match stretch from Sept. 12 to Sept. 19. The first meeting between these teams this season, in April, ended 0-0. The Reign head home to host Boston Legacy FC at Lumen Field on Friday, Sept. 25.
Closing Take
This was Twister without the flying cow: a storm, a long wait in the shelter, then chaos aimed squarely at one goal. Dickey spent the night playing storm chaser, and she caught most of it. She could not catch all of it. Denver keeps creeping toward the playoff line like a front rolling in off the Rockies, and Seattle, suddenly on a two-match skid, has some homework before Boston comes to town.
